Chapter 45

“Savior, Su Maner, you guys eat first, I’m gonna go in and grab some grape wine!”

The Uyghur man turned to enter the tent once he’d finished.

Su Maner then returned to her senses, her eyes blinked as she spoke in a daze, “Gege is so good looking……”

Bai Tan had just opened his mouth wide to bite into the deer meat, covering his whole face in grease. Suddenly hearing that out of nowhere made him choke as he started coughing, he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand in distress, “Don’t just look at me, eat.”

Su Maner’s face reddened, she cut down a little piece of deer meat and took a little bite in a reserved manner, “Nice Gege, I don’t even know your name yet! My name’s Su Maner, nickname’s Manman, what about you?”

Bai Tan swallowed down a bite of deer meat, “Bai……Bai, Bai Lu[1].”

Su Maner smiled, her glass-like eyes were sparkling vividly, “Lu as in a little deer?”

Bai Tan nodded, he felt embarrassed from her stare so he lowered his head to gnaw on the meat.

Getting embarrassed just like that? Their Uyghur men wouldn’t get embarrassed! Su Maner’s interest perked up, she sat even closer, eagerly asking, “Oh right, how much older is Gege than me? What if you were a Didi[2]!”

Bai Tan immediately choked on a bite of deer meat, he covered his mouth, the root of his ears had turned red before he could finally swallow it, “What is a little girl like you even thinking! How, how could I be younger than you, I’m already nineteen, I just……look kind of young.”

“Nineteen?” Su Maner’s eyes widened to a circle, she counted with her fingers then chuckled, “I’m fifteen this year, Gege is older than me by four years. Us Uyghur people get married at the age of fifteen, I……I gotta get married this year.”

Bai Tan’s eyelids jumped chaotically: ‘This little girl, why is she telling me this, she couldn’t be thinking of……’

As the thought popped out, Su Maner leaned close to his ear, asking in a small voice, “Gege, if you aren’t married yet, how about I get married to you?”

……That really was it! Bai Tan coughed roughly while covering his mouth, he shook his head like a pellet drum.

Su Maner’s lips quirked up, continuing to query, “Why? Is Gege already married?”

Bai Tan instantly nodded.

Su Maner’s entire being wilted like a withered eggplant. She put down the deer meat in her hand, and a layer of liquid covered her eyes.

“Gege doesn’t look like a married person at all, it must be that Su Maner’s too ugly, that’s why Gege doesn’t like me. Su Maner deserves to be married to someone she doesn’t like!” As she finished, the Uyghur girl stood up. She ran to the grass-field by herself, sat down, and curled herself up into a ball.

Bai Tan looked at her backside, and a sense of pity flew from his heart uncontrollably.

If he didn’t clear it up with the young girl, after he left, she was probably gonna miss him a lot.

The feeling of one-sided lovesickness was extremely unbearable.

Bai Tan finished the last piece of meat in his hand in two to three bites, then walked over to sit next to Su Maner. He hesitatingly patted her continuously trembling shoulder and softened his voice, “Come on, don’t cry. You have to find the person you like then marry him, don’t let yourself be taken advantage of, ever. It’s not that Gege can’t get married, it’s just that…Gege won’t be alive for long. If you marry Gege, then you’re gonna have to remain a widow in the future.”

Once Su Maner heard, she cried even harder.

Bai Tan obviously didn’t know how to comfort a girl, he was immediately lost, then he remembered the brocade pocket. He fished it out of his pocket before stuffing it into Su Maner’s hand, “Here…… this brocade pocket, it’s yours, right? I came to find you because I saw this. If you don’t want it, then, I’ll throw it away?”

Su Maner didn’t even lift her head, she stopped her sobbing, “Gege, you keep it.”

Bai Tan was confused, he comforted her, “Alright, alright, I will keep it.”

Su Maner finally raised her head and looked at him with teary eyes, “Why won’t Gege be alive for long?”

Bai Tan let out a full burp, he laid down and spread out his four limbs comfortably, he gazed at the night sky high above his head.

There were very few clouds at the time, stars filled the sky, they were remarkably close, almost if they could be touched if he just reached his hand out.

He couldn’t help but stretch his hand out to touch one of the brightest shining stars, he muttered, “Gege……has some kind of illness, there’s no cure. So, you best not be hung on Gege, if you miss Gege in the future, then find that star. Once Gege dies in the future, my soul will fly there.”

Su Maner also lay down, she looked at the star he pointed at in a daze and didn’t say anything for a long while.

A flow of night wind swept over the hill, the wild grasses swayed as they let out sha sha sounds as if it was a soft breath of god.

Bai Tan closed his eyes, he was able to feel such peace for the first time. It was as if he was lying in the palms of god, with no fear, no sorrow, and if he were to fall asleep just like this, then he wouldn’t be able to wake from the long slumber.

Su Maner hummed a song softly, it was an Uyghur lullaby.

The straying soul, when will you return home?

The night’s already dark, I’m still waiting for you,

Looking at stars, unwilling to close my eyes…

Bai Tan’s lips curved up without him noticing, a teardrop slipped down the corner of his eye.

A place to return to? This journey he took, it was probably his final destination.

Good thing there was no one waiting for him either.

……

That night, at midnight.

Someone walked up behind the two without a sound, their shadow fell onto Su Maner’s face.

Su Maner sat up, to see her father staring at him[3] with dark clouds on his face. He pointed at the person next to her and gestured for her to be quiet with his hand, then walked back to the tent. Su Maner saw that the young male next to her was already asleep, so she didn’t want to disturb him. She got up with soft movements, following after her father.

Once she entered the tent, Su Muzhe turned around with a horn cup filled with grape wine. Su Maner received it in her hands happily, just as she wanted to take a sip, Su Muzhe blocked the cup’s top with his hand. He took out a red pill and sent it up next to his daughter’s lips, he lowered his voice, “Eat this first, then give him the wine, try to drink as little as you can, do not be greedy.”

Su Maner swallowed the pill, then smacked her lips for the aftertaste, “Dad, isn’t this the antidote candy?”

Su Muzhe rubbed her head, “Just listen to your dad, go quickly.”

Su Maner looked at the wine in her hand, suddenly coming to an understanding as she exhibited a suspicious look, “Dad, what are you doing? Is there poison in this wine?”

Su Muzhe hushed her, “That person is from the demon sect, remember what dad told you? Everyone from the demon sects are cruel, brutal, and bad people, we and them are ultimate enemies. Dad isn’t asking for you to kill him, this is just to knock him unconscious so we can take him to the person who offered a reward.”

As he spoke, he took a little piece of lambskin scroll out of his sleeve. He opened up the Jianghu wanted paper with a reward on it, and drawn on it, was an extremely beautiful face, it was exactly how “Bai Lu” looked.

Was he the evildoer that killed the Wu Lin Overlord told in Jianghu rumors?

Su Maner shook her head in disbelief, “But he saved me, he doesn’t seem like a bad guy at all!”

Su Muzhe let out a cold sneer, “An individual from the demon sect, how can they be trusted? Maybe, he was the one who lured you away then brought you back, in order to gain our trust, wanting to trick us. Did you forget that your mother died at the hands of the demon sect people? My good daughter, take the chance before he wakes up, and finish it quickly.”

Su Maner tightened her grip on the horn cup in her hand, tears rained down her cheeks as she shook her head nonstop.

Su Muzhe’s eyes were stern, “If that was the person who killed your mother, would you also be this weak? Yet you begged for me to take you out to train and such, you should’ve been married off already!”

Su Maner stopped her tears, clenching her teeth, “Daughter……daughter will obey.”

Once Su Maner came out of the tent with the wine, she saw that Bai Tan was already sitting up, it seemed like he’d been awake for a while. She dragged her feet and walked up to sit next to him. The horn cup slipped out of her slightly quivering hand, but was caught by a slender, long, white hand, “Be careful.”

Su Maner looked over, that pair of phoenix eyes reflected the firelight, the ice-like cold, sharp look from their first meeting wasn’t there anymore. Instead, they were like glaze, clear, and pure. With these kinds of eyes, how could he be a bad person?

Seeing Bai Tan raise the horn cup, about to drink from it, Su Maner stopped his hand in panic. She leaned her head in as if she was gonna drink it with him in the style of a marriage toast, tears filled the brim of her eyes, she spoke softly, “Gege, leave quickly.”

Bai Tan’s heart moved…….this world wasn’t filled with danger everywhere, there were still people that could be trusted. Earlier, ever since Su Maner went into the tent, he’d woken up. He heard the father and daughter’s conversation without missing anything, if Su Maner lied to him, then she would’ve already been dead by his hand by now, but Su Maner hadn’t. In the end, the last bit of kindness he hid in his heart wasn’t a failed existence.

“Su Maner, you’re a good girl, it’s a pity that Gege can’t marry you!”

As he finished, Bai Tan threw the wine cup aside. While he leaped onto a horse, he heard loud shouting from behind him. A few people came out of the tents to surround him simultaneously, the people around him all had short swords with wide-blades equipped in their hands. Each stood in a different corner, there were eight people, making a formation that trapped him inside.

“Dad!”

“Heaven and Earth Eight Sun Formation[4].” Bai Tan looked around then chuckled coldly in mockery, “The Tian Yang[5] Sect is known to be one of the big three righteous sects of the West region, yet the honest and heroic sect also bites the hand of one who helps them? Bullying by a number advantage?”

“You evildoer of the demon sect, don’t spout nonsense, I say that those so-called east travelers were all your underlings!” Su Muzhe said harshly while staring at him, “If you surrender now, then you won’t have to suffer as much!”

“We don’t know who’s gonna be the one suffering yet!” Bai Tan’s hand shook and Shiyue slipped out of his sleeve. He stepped on the horse’s back to launch himself up, the tips of the other’s swords aimed towards him, all flying towards him at once. But how could those moves be compared to such an exquisite qinggong move like “Wu Feng Nong Yue”? In an instant, Bai Tan leaped out of the formation and landed below the grass hill.

Su Muzhe immediately gave a command when he saw the other escaping, the people of the Eight Sun Formation all threw their sharp swords out, forming a sword formation and were all pushed towards Bai Tan by the neili from Su Muzhe’s palm. Numerous sharp swords spun in the air, their cold lights blinked as they created a violent hurricane. Grass and leaves danced in the air at that instant, clouds covered the sky above.

Realizing how powerful the sword formation was, Bai Tan turned around to face it. But before he could even swing his weapon, he saw a little figure riding over on a horse. They jumped off with a sword in their hand, and sprinted straight towards the sword formation, “Gege, be careful! Leave quickly! I’ll help you stop my dad!”

“Su Maner!”

Bai Tan was shocked, but he couldn’t make it in time to stop her. The young girl was like a mantis attempting to stop a car with its arms, powerless as she was sucked into the sword formation in the blink of an eye. Her body instantly entangled into a blurry, bleeding flesh as her four limbs broke off. He immediately tightened his grip on the reins and raced toward her, he slashed open the sword formation with his weapon. He didn’t care about the severe pain in his organs caused by the blade forces as he reached his bare hands through the blades for the young girl’s crippled, bleeding body. He held onto her, only to see her eyes opened as wide as a circle, she coughed out a mouthful of blood, then no breath remained…

She was killed on the spot.

Bai Tan felt like he was being pummeled by heavy hammers as he stood there, stunned. Even when he saw a man with a pair of eyes that were so enraged that they were about to split open, running towards him with a sword as if he’d gone mad, he actually forgot to use qinggong to dodge it. The horse below him was frightened and threw him off its back, he couldn’t grab onto the corpse either, as it was stolen by the coming man.

“Give me back my daughter!”

The blade tip that struck towards him titled, as a cold light flashed by his eyes, Bai Tan felt a piercing pain from his shoulder. Warm, fresh blood flew onto his face, then he finally returned to his senses. He just muddle-headedly broke the blade with a hit from his palm, then also struck his weapon towards the man in front of him ruthlessly. He jumped up on the horse’s back and dashed the whole way as he got to the deep part of the thick forest.

He didn’t know how far he’d gone in the bleak dark night, the horse suddenly hissed in fear, kicking up its front hooves.

Bai Tan hadn’t grabbed onto the reins tight enough and unexpectedly rolled off the horse’s back, he then saw a figure flashing in the darkness ahead. His body fell into someone’s steady embrace, a heavy smell of medicinal blood jumped at his face.

A familiar male voice rang beside his ear, “Where did you come from, how did you wind up like this?”

“Scram!” Bai Tan pushed the other away forcefully, stumbling as he ended up down on his knees on the floor. He looked at his blood-tainted hands, trembling as he took out the brocade pocket and looked at it in bewilderment.

Wu Yanfu saw his reaction and also his body covered in blood, his brows furrowed, “Are you hurt?”

Bai Tan was ignorant of his question as if he hadn’t even seen him. Tears fell onto the brocade pocket as if they were beads falling off of a broken string, he spoke to himself, “Su Maner, you are a good girl, it’s a pity that you met an ill-fated one like Gege. Since you wanted to be married to Gege and we’ve already had our marriage toast anyway, Gege will marry you.”

Wu Yanfu was surprised, just because he hadn’t looked after him for one day, the little wolf cub had already had a marriage toast with someone else?

Shizun hasn’t even had a marriage toast with you.

“From today onwards, you are my wife, and I’m your husband.”

Bai Tan carefully put the brocade pocket on the ground as he said that, just as he was about to bend over and bow to heaven and earth with the brocade pocket, Wu Yanfu reached out to hold onto his shoulder, but was scratched without mercy.

“Don’t disturb my* marriage, scram.”

Wu Yanfu squinted his eyes as he moved in front of Bai Tan. He picked up the brocade pocket on the ground before kneeling down on one knee, he swept the clothing in front of his knee aside then bowed towards him, speaking in a low voice, “Sure, let’s get married.”

“Don’t touch my wife!” Bai Tan was immediately enraged, he attempted to reach out and snatch the brocade pocket but felt a piercing pain in his shoulder, he couldn’t even raise his arm, then he finally remembered that he’d received quite a few injuries from the blades.

Wu Yanfu pulled the young male into his embrace and unfastened his belt nimbly, his pupils shrunk once he pulled his clothes apart. Numerous cuts, both deep and shallow, crossed over the young male’s white jade body, a bloody hole was still bleeding on his shoulder. Good thing it hadn’t injured the meridians to his heart, there were no life-threatening dangers for now.

His hand moved as fast as lighting, helping to stop his bleeding. His hand brushed over Shiyue’s blade, cutting open a wound before he passed it up to Bai Tan’s lips. Bai Tan turned his head away, refusing him in a cold voice, “I* don’t want it.”

“Drink it.” Wu Yanfu turned his head by the chin as he pressed his bleeding hand onto his tightly closed lips.

“No!” The young male shook his head with all that he had. He scratched and bit while being in the other’s embrace, even letting out many killing moves, he was exactly like a wolf cub that’d gone mad. Wu Yanfu pressed him into his embrace with no escape and made the other drink half a mouthful of blood under both coaxing and force before he couldn’t hold him down any longer. The other struggled out of his arms, turned around to curl himself up into a ball, not allowing him to treat his injuries.

“Scram, I* want some alone time by myself.”

“That order’s too hard to obey.”

Wu Yanfu grabbed onto the back of his collar, picked up the other entirely, and carried him onto the horseback.

Translator’s Comments: Su Maner was a short-lived queen ;-;

Xiao’s Comments: Well, it’s not like Wu Yanfu’s going to let anyone else marry you, Bai Tan…

Translator’s Notes:

[1] Lu (鹿) = Deer

[2] Didi (弟弟) – Younger brother, similar to ‘Gege’, can be an intimate title to address a younger male, doesn’t need blood relation or be sibling by law type of stuff

[3] In the original text, the author did use “him” and not “her”, but it seems more like he was staring at “her” so it could be a typo, or that the father was actually staring at Bai Tan from the beginning.

[4] Heaven Earth Eight Sun Formation (天地八阳阵) – literally means “heaven (sky) / earth (ground) / eight / sun / formation”

[5] Tian Yang Sect (天阳派) – literally means “heaven (sky) / sun / sect”
