Chapter 6, Devotion

The number of texts received from that lunatic was increasing day by day.

“Good morning.”

“Good night.”

“The weather’s good today.”

“Did you fight with that woman again?”

“What’s good about her?”

“Are you happy with her?”

Ye Zi deleted all of those messages and never responded once to him.

But what Hare said was right. His relationship with Nie Haixia really varies. On good days, they would stick together in class every day, going out for a jog like the other couples, or sharing a set meal together at the cafeteria. But his girlfriend would always get angry for practically no reason. Such as the time when she wanted to eat ice cream but Ye Zi forgot his meal card, she actually got angry with him for the entire day because of that. And there was also the time when they were walking together on the street. Her face suddenly turned sour and she just ran off after throwing off Ye Zi’s hand. Till today, Ye Zi still had no idea what happened.

But his relationship with his girlfriend was his own business. Hare had no right to butt into it.

The context of the messages were constantly evolving to the point where it was making him feel irritated.

“You don’t look so good today. Are you sick?”

“You have so many friends.”

“I like how you look when you’re jogging.”

“You’re always sitting in the last row.”

“You fell asleep again. You can’t doze off during class.”

Then, four things happened.

1.

As soon as Ye Zi saw the text message telling him not to doze off during class, he raised his head abruptly, his heart pounding.

He was currently in his high-level math class and all the seats were packed in the classroom while warm air constantly poured out from the air conditioner. The bespectacled high-level maths teacher was pointing to the slides and explaining the lecture to the class. Though his voice was loud, most of the students were feeling drowsy. Carefully, he looked over the backs of all the students and then to his left and right, but he did not see anyone suspicious.

Gradually, he felt a cold tingling rising up from behind his left shoulder as well as his neck. An almost piercing feeling.

Clenching his fists, he slowly turned around and looked at the back door that was only two steps away from him.

As expected!

The door wasn’t properly shut and there was a small gap there.

That person was stuck close to the gap, staring at him with his wide eyes—

Could it be his imagination? Ye Zi did not know why he could see it so clearly. He could see the man’s eyes, wide with excitement. He could see the red lines lacing through the whites of his eyes, as well as that grin at his lips.

Ye Zi almost jumped back in fright.

Nie Haixia who was sitting next to him noticed his movements and asked, puzzled, “What’s wrong?”

“It’s a little cold.”

Ye Zi answered. Then, he stood up and slammed the door shut, locking that madman outside, and it made a loud bang. When the other students looked over, Ye Zi put on an apologetic smile and went back to his seat. While he continued to listen to the lecture, fear still remained in his heart.

2.

For the sake of his final exams, Ye Zi would head to the library every day, often forgetting food or sleep.

One time, when he was woken up by Nie Haixia who had just arrived, it was already seven at night. He hadn’t eaten dinner yet and his stomach was rumbling. Nie Haixia pointed to a fancy boxed lunch on the table as well as milk tea, desserts, and whatnot on the table, and she smiled, “Hubby, did you buy this for me?”

“It’s probably someone else’s.”

“Huh?”

“I was sleeping the whole time. I didn’t buy it.”

Nie Haixia asked the students in front of them. “Hey, does this belong to you?”

The girl on the other side said, “A guy put them there. He was just there earlier. Did you ask him to buy it?”

The guy next to her smiled at Ye Zi. “Must be your little brother, right? He was wearing the uniform from XX Private High School, and man, a lot of people turned to stare at him. He bought the food for you so better eat while it’s hot.”

The girl blushed a little. “He kept looking at you from the side the whole time, and he had a super gentle expression on his face. It’s a shame you were asleep and didn’t see it though.”

Nie Haixia frowned. “You had a younger brother?”

After she said that, she opened up the lunch box and couldn’t help but lament. “Woah, isn’t this too rich? There’s meat, vegetables, fruits, and dessert. This one is regular milk tea, but why aren’t there any pearls? There’s only coconut jelly. You’ll get fat if you eat sweets at night.”

Ye Zi never ordered pearls with his milk tea, only coconut jelly, and he only ever ordered the classic flavor. For someone like him who loved sweets, his favorite part was the cream…All of these foods were his favorites.

Nie Haixia said, “Can I eat it?”

Ye Zi responded, “I’m just worried it’s poisoned.”

“Haha, I’ll help you test then!”

3.

One night, while studying by himself till 10 pm, it began to rain heavily. It rarely rained in December, but once it did, things tended to get quite cold.

Ye Zi had just rushed out of the library and he was drenched by the rain, chilling him to the bone.

A person wearing a hoodie suddenly came over with a black umbrella and blocked the rain for him.

Ye Zi had only taken one glance at him, but he immediately frowned and left.

But after running a few steps, the man suddenly put the umbrella down in front of him before shoving his hands into his pockets. Then, he ran off. The cold rain poured down onto Hare’s head and shoulders, and his figure soon disappeared beyond the curtains of rain.

4.

Ye Zi caught a cold after that, and it was because of the rain. Hare had clearly given him the umbrella that day, but he still did not take it and instead rushed back to his dorm under the rain. The baths were already closed really early on so he just went to sleep after wiping his body down simply. But of course, he got a fever the next day.

Several of his buddies had already gone to the library to fight on. He messaged his girlfriend about it, but his girlfriend responded, “It’s okay, you’ll be better after drinking some warm water.”

When he saw that text, Ye Zi’s head felt even heavier. It was impossible to say that he wasn’t disappointed. Every time Nie Haixia got sick, he would always be the first to rush out of school to buy her medicine. Whenever her period was irregular, he would also be the one to take her to a Chinese doctor and got the auntie working at the cafeteria to help stew her medicine each day. But now, this was the first time he caught a cold, and all she told him was “drink warm water and you’ll be fine”.

He thought to himself, what did he do wrong to Nie Haixia? Or was it because Nie Haixia was bad at caring for people, or maybe she just doesn’t care about him as much as he cared about her.

His body felt very uncomfortable but he couldn’t be bothered to buy any medicine either. So, Ye Zi laid in bed and went back to sleep without drinking any water or eating any food. But he really did feel hungry and uncomfortable, it gave him the feeling like he was the saddest person in the world.

He didn’t pick up when Jiang Wen called or read Hare’s messages either.

Then, on that evening, his roommates were all sighing when they came back. “Wow, your wife is so nice to you, Ye Zi. Look how much medicine there is! And she left so many notes. Take two a day, she says, take three a day, she says, she also wrote down what to look out for. What a thoughtful girl.”

“She just left, right? Maybe she didn’t think it would be convenient for her to be here when we’re about to come back? She even bought you porridge, heated up some water for you, helped you cool down your forehead and fed you medicine and whatever. You really are a lucky brat. So, you feeling better yet?”

“Huh? Why won’t the door close? I think it’s broken.”

Ye Zi who was half-sober really did find a wet towel on his forehead. His upper body was bare and there was a towel hanging by the bed. The entire room smelled like medicine. But he really did seem to feel much better. His temperature wasn’t as high as before, and his stomach wasn’t hungry anymore either.

After getting up to use the toilet, he wrote a message to his girlfriend, feeling touched. “Thank you for today.”

After a while, his girlfriend replied, “What happened all of a sudden?”

“You spent the day taking care of me, right?”

“You must be dreaming, hubby. I had an exam this afternoon and I just came out from the library. Oh, that’s right. You said you had a fever today, right? How are you now? Did you feel better after drinking the warm water?”

Ye Zi sat down and looked through his text messages.

Sure enough, he found it.

[7:40 A.M.]

Hare: Good morning, Ah Zi.

[9:30 A.M.]

Hare: I didn’t see you in the library today. Did you get sick?

[11:00 A.M.]

Hare: Did you catch a cold from the rain yesterday?

[12:20 P.M.]

Hare: I finally opened the door ^^

[12:40 P.M.]

Hare: Your shirt is completely soaked. I’ll just take it off for you.

[13:00 P.M.]

Hare: You look so cute when you’re swallowing, but you keep spilling. Just like a child.

[13:20 P.M.]

Hare: I carried you to the toilet just now ^^ Don’t worry, I didn’t see anything!

[13:40 P.M.]

Rabbit: It’s all my fault I didn’t watch after you enough. Your fever is really bad. You really don’t know how to take care of yourself, and that woman is completely useless too.

[15:20 P.M.]

Hare: But with me, you won’t have to worry. I’ll take care of you, Ah Zi.

…

Sitting on the bed, Ye Zi could feel his hair rise.

He remembered now. He was barely conscious but he still remembered it a little. Only, he thought that was just a dream!

Someone was sitting beside him, constantly wiping his face and forehead for him with a towel.

Someone was speaking by his ear, and their voice was soft and clear.

Someone was helping him wipe his lips very gently.

Someone carried him up, and brought him to the toilet…

Ye Zi’s face went completely read, and he had no idea whether it was due to shame or anger.

With a dizzy head, he picked up his phone and put Hare’s contact information into his blacklist.

But who knew that another message would pop up just after he did that.

[22:02 P.M.]

Hare: Good night, Ah Zi. See you tomorrow.

Ye Zi just realized that his phone may be lacking in functions. He could still see the other person’s messages despite having blocked them.

He tumbled around in bed, feeling both embarrassed and resentful.

But he had no idea that there were several spots in the room that were sparkling like lovely little stars. They were hidden cameras.

On the other end of the cameras.

In front of a laptop screen.

Hare who had just come out of the shower was sipping on his milk cozily, a charming smile on his face.

His Ye Zi was usually like a defensive hedgehog, but now, he was just like a child, tumbling around his bed while holding his pillow with his red cheeks. Ah, it was simply too cute. So cute that he wanted to eat him up in one bite.
