No mercy was given as Qianqian Wan repeatedly lost in chess, using the black pieces and within ten moves. His self-esteem was completely extinguished as he stared at the man sitting across from him. He could only complain in his thoughts.
Does the master have too much free-time on his hands? Why does he want to play chess with no one else but me?!
So despite Fengguang’s lateness, when he saw her arrive, it was as though he had spotted his saviour. Also, when he saw her appearance, his eyes lit up even more.
“Sorry, I used a little too much time dressing…” Fengguang didn’t know why she apologized but when the two men looked at her, she felt apologetic.
Xuean put down the chess piece he was holding in his fingers and his thin lips curved up to a certain angle. “Indeed, I knew that this outfit would look good on you.”
The top was made from white silk, embroidered with red floral print. She was also wearing a pink outer layer and a red sash tied at her waist. The bottom of the dress was a simple and elegant red and it flowed with the wind like moonlight. Such a moon-like dress complimented her graceful figure, highlighting her charming frailty.
“Why did you give me such beautiful clothing?”
“The one wearing them is beautiful therefore the clothes become beautiful.”
Qianqian Wan couldn’t believe that this was his master.
This doesn’t make sense! Such womanizing words couldn’t have come from my master!
Fengguang’s skin was thick to the max. She didn’t react at all to such evident praise. She had always been beautiful so such compliments were as regular as having a meal.
After failing to woo her, Xuean didn’t feel awkward. He got up. “I made you dress nicer because I’m taking you out to play.”
“You… You’re willing to take me out in public?”
“Why would I be unwilling? Naturally, I’ll be at your side the whole time.” He smiled and turned to leave the jewellery store.
Fengguang didn’t think twice and rushed up in little steps to catch up to him.
The City of Tong was a very rich town. There were many vendors and civilians in the streets. Fengguang was the eldest miss who grew up protected inside her family’s court. She rarely had the opportunity to personally experience such a bustling and lively atmosphere. As she strolled down the street, she was filled with curiosity and excitement.
Xuean bought Fengguang candy. The candy was in the shape of a rabbit. She held it in her hand, unwilling to eat it.
Xuean suggested, “How about I buy you another one to keep?”
“No need. It’ll dissolve eventually,” she said as she stared at the candy. She then made her resolve and bit off the rabbit’s head. She then cried out her new discovery. “It’s so sweet!”
Xuean’s eyes contained a sliver of satisfaction. “You’re making a big deal out of nothing.”
“You’re not going to eat?”
She curiously asked him but he replied with disinterest. “Only kids eat that.”
“So that’s why you bought it for me…” Her expression twitched. “I’m sixteen this year.”
“And I’m twenty-six.”
Her cheeks puffed up like a bun.
Xuean patted her on the head then turned around. “Let’s go to a tea shop.”
There were many customers in the tea shop but they managed to find a spot to sit down in the corner. Because there was a crowd, there was also a lot of discussion happening. Several tables were loudly talking about the emperor wanting to marry off the princess to the Silver Mask Strategist. Xuean’s teacup stopped midway and only after hearing that the Strategist had rejected the offer, did the teacup reach his lips.
Fengguang appeared to be focused on eating her candy but in reality, she knew that he only brought her here to get information. The City of Tong clearly contained people who worked for him but why didn’t he ask Qianqian Wan to do this? It was because he didn’t want Qianqian Wan to risk exposure. Also, he was only spending these few days in the City of Tong because he was injured and couldn’t travel too far.
This man had a motive for everything he did.
