Amidst the dense forests and vast sandy lands, due to the lack of cars and trains in the Far East, Qing Ying had no choice but to board a carriage and begin his long journey from the capital of Manchu Qing to Saint Petersburg.

The road, made of compacted loess, was far from smooth, with potholes and scattered stones. Despite the carriage being equipped with a highly sophisticated shock absorption system, the occupants could still feel significant jolts. Over the five months, Qing Ying had grown accustomed to having a gentle and adorable girl by his side; now, looking at the empty carriage, he felt a deep sense of loss, sighing and feeling a myriad of emotions.

In this era, the northern land had not yet suffered from heavy industrial pollution or desertification. The sky was vast and the wilderness boundless. The mountains and fields were covered in frost and snow, and the rivers were frozen. It was the twelfth lunar month, close to the New Year, and this already desolate road was even more sparsely populated. After leaving the Zhili Province, only Qing Ying's group continued to travel on the winding and rugged road. Fortunately, the wind and snow were not severe, allowing them to make steady progress. When the sun set and they could not find an inn, Qing Ying could only lie down in the carriage, fully clothed. In these long and lonely winter nights, Qing Ying always missed the little girl Xue'er; if she were with him, they would surely be filled with affection and laughter.

A month later, Qing Ying's group left Outer Mongolia and officially entered the Siberian region under Russian control. The sun was pale, and the sky was clear. Looking far into the distance, one could only see undulating hills stretching endlessly. Due to the sparse population, the Russian road built along the mountains was severely damaged. Without GPS satellite navigation in the 19th century, it was almost a deadly maze. Every night, sand and stones flew, and the north wind howled. The convoy had to find a sheltered mountain hollow to barely start a fire and cook, enduring the cold night. On the desolate plains, one could occasionally see a few thatched cottages surrounded by fields. Only once a week could they encounter a dilapidated Russian post station, where they could bathe, resupply, and continue their journey.

During these months of Qing Ying's long journey, the situation in the Far East finally came to a close. After nearly a month of repeated negotiations, the Manchu Qing government finally signed the final ceasefire document with the Japanese government on February 5th. The treaty consisted of 11 articles, including additional agreements and special clauses.

Politically, the tributary relationship between Korea and China, which had lasted for nearly a thousand years, no longer existed. Although Korea nominally became an independent and autonomous country, it had in fact become a Japanese colony. In just half a year, ten thousand Korean women became pregnant, and thousands were forced into military prostitution, suffering daily humiliation. For the next half-century, the original inhabitants of the Korean Peninsula lived in absolute terror under Japanese rule, treated as slaves, and enduring a life worse than that of cattle and horses.

Territorially, the Manchu Qing and Japan negotiated and set new borders based on their current front lines. A large part of the Liaodong Peninsula was ceded to Japan. However, the thousands of Japanese troops in Taiwan, due to inadequate supplies, rampant disease, and the loss of sea control, abandoned their efforts to capture the region and withdrew. According to orders from the General Headquarters, the Japanese army, unusually, did not engage in looting and destruction before leaving; Itō Hirobumi had already foreseen that when the Japanese navy regained its advantage, Taiwan would eventually become Japanese territory.

In terms of reparations, the Manchu Qing and Japan engaged in intense negotiations, each employing various tactics, threats, and repeated probing. The final treaty stipulated that the Manchu Qing would pay Japan 70 million taels of silver in military expenses, to be paid in six installments over two years. Additionally, the Manchu Qing was forced to open several more ports for trade, allowing Japanese merchants to establish factories and enjoy most-favored-nation treatment. When Li Hongzhang signed the document and walked out of the Chūnfanlóu, the sky outside had already turned dark. The cold wind howled, and snowflakes flew. The eternal curse, how could it be escaped?
