Li Xuan still hasn't obtained his driver's license, but his brother is already driving a Nissan GTR sports car. Li Ke himself naturally doesn't have the money to buy a sports car; it was a gift from his big brother, Scarface Qiang.
The day after attending the opening ceremony of Keji Electronics Company, Shao Yongqiang ordered a car for his little brother. As he put it, how could one be a boss without a good car for show? Of course, the source of this car wasn't exactly legitimate. It couldn't be a new car. Those in the know would make a special call, and the other party would get the car for you according to your requirements within a few days. Meanwhile, a police station in Hong Kong or Macau might receive a report of a stolen car.
"Little brother, this car has a powerful engine, it's really exciting to drive. Do you want to borrow it for a couple of days?" Li Ke drove his younger brother to the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Today was the first day of the semester.
"You keep it for yourself!" Li Xuan politely declined. He waved to his older brother and walked into the campus with his suitcase.
Li Xuan went to the new student registration office, and then a senior student took him to pay the fees, collect living supplies, and introduce him to the functions of the various buildings along the way. Finally, he was escorted to his dormitory.
The history of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is not as long as that of the University of Hong Kong. It has been less than thirty years since its establishment. CUHK operates on a college system, consisting of three colleges: Chung Chi College, New Asia College, and United College.
CUHK's daily management has two lines: one is the college, responsible for daily teaching and research affairs. CUHK currently has four colleges: the College of Arts, the College of Science, the College of Business Administration, and the College of Social Sciences. Each college is further divided into departments. Li Xuan is enrolled in the Department of Electronic Engineering in the College of Science, majoring in Electronic Computing Research. Apart from teaching and research, all other daily life and social activities are managed by the colleges, and every student and faculty member must join one of the colleges.
Li Xuan applied to join United College. The reason he chose United College was that he wanted to live in the newly completed Pui Lam Hall. A few days ago, when he and Zhong Chuhong came to scout the area, he immediately chose this dormitory.
Pui Lam Hall has a very beautiful view. Odd-numbered rooms overlook the garden of United College, while even-numbered rooms offer a 180-degree view of Tolo Harbor. During the day, you can see the undulating mountains of Baisha Ling, and at night, you can enjoy the most enchanting views of the Science Park and the Tolo Highway.
He was indeed very lucky to secure a room in this highly competitive dormitory. The dormitory has five floors, with co-ed housing. Floors one to three are for male students, and floors four and five are for female students.
The accommodation conditions at CUHK are much better than those of many universities in mainland China thirty years later. The dormitory is well-equipped, with shared bathrooms, showers, kitchens, and lounges on each floor. The ground floor also has a reading room, a convenience store, and a laundry room for students' convenience.
As soon as Li Xuan entered the building, he was warmly greeted by Aunt Cai, the dormitory worker. His room was on the third floor, a double room. According to Aunt Cai, his roommate had already arrived. When he carried his luggage upstairs and opened the door, he indeed saw an extraordinary-looking boy sitting at the desk reading a book. The boy turned his head to look at the door when he heard the noise.
"Hello, I'm Li Xuan, your roommate!" Li Xuan introduced himself with a smile.
"Hello, I'm Lin Yuhao!" The other boy also smiled kindly.
"I heard that Pui Lam Hall is notoriously difficult to get into. We're both lucky!"
While organizing his luggage, Li Xuan chatted casually with his roommate to break the ice. They would be sharing the same room for at least the next academic year. He secretly observed the other boy's attire; Lin Yuhao was definitely from a wealthy family, and his clothes were very well-chosen. As for his manner of speaking, Li Xuan found that he didn't talk much.
"Is that so? I didn't know!" Lin Yuhao smiled awkwardly. His father had directly arranged for him to stay in this dormitory, originally selecting a single room, but he later requested a double room.
"What major are you in?" Li Xuan realized that his roommate, while easy to get along with, was somewhat introverted, so he had to keep the conversation going.
"Business Management and Human Resource Management!" Lin Yuhao's response was concise and clear.
"I'm studying Electronic Computing Research. Your major is better; you can become a high-level executive in a big company after graduation!" Li Xuan said with a chuckle, but he noticed a fleeting look of bitterness on his roommate's face.
"The major I'm in was newly added by CUHK last year. This year, only eighteen students were admitted to this program!" Li Xuan sensed that there was something troubling his roommate and changed the subject to introduce his own major.
"I'm going downstairs to call my big brother. He's going to bring me a computer. See you later!" Li Xuan said goodbye to Lin Yuhao and went downstairs.
Li Ke had been driving his new GTR around, showing off like crazy. The GTR is a two-door sports car with limited space. After Li Xuan got in, he managed to squeeze his suitcase in, but there was no room for his new Apple II computer. But his big brother didn't mind the trouble and was willing to make another trip to personally deliver the computer to the school.
Li Xuan used the public phone downstairs to call home. His father said that his big brother had left with the computer about forty to fifty minutes ago. He estimated that he would arrive at the school soon, so he decided to wait at the school gate.
Li Xuan stood under a tree for a while, and finally, Li Ke arrived in his white sports car. They first drove the car to the dormitory building and then carried the computer upstairs.
"This is my big brother, Li Ke!" Li Xuan introduced him.
"Hello!" Lin Yuhao couldn't help but look at Li Ke a few more times.
Li Ke was wearing flip-flops, shorts, and a plaid short-sleeved shirt. He didn't even take off his sunglasses when he entered the room, making him look very different from his brother's student attire.
"Hello, please take good care of my little brother, Xuan!" Li Ke, now a boss, had become much more polite. He no longer used the foul language he used to, believing that being polite was good for business.
Li Xuan accompanied his big brother for a tour of the campus. Every young person has a special longing for the ivory tower of university, even someone like Li Ke, who dropped out of school after junior high. This is why he felt particularly proud that his younger brother had been admitted to university. He was willing to spend the time to make two trips to deliver his brother's luggage to the school.
After seeing off his big brother, Li Xuan's university life officially began. After lunch, the dormitory president came to knock on each room's door. The opening day of Pui Lam Hall had a tradition: everyone would prepare dinner together.
The senior students on the dormitory committee had already prepared the ingredients. Each floor's residents had to prepare dinner using the provided ingredients. Each floor also had to prepare a main dish, which would be tasted and judged by the dormitory workers to select the best one.
After dinner, Pui Lam Hall would hold the first all-dormitory meeting of the new academic year. The dormitory president would introduce the dormitory's rules and the planned activities for the semester. At the end of the semester, there would be an election for the new dormitory committee, and interested residents could start showing their enthusiasm from the beginning of the semester.
