"Is it that heavy? Why didn't you call Yiliang to come and pick us up?" Feng Zhenchang put the two bags in the corner.

"Calling Yiliang is troublesome. His master always answers first. Besides, we were on the bus the whole way, and I could carry them." Mei Qiuping sat down and drank half a cup of water. "Have you eaten? Is there any leftover food? Are you starving, Yiping?"

"No," Feng Yiping also sat down at the table by the window.

The room was packed with bags against the walls, a shelf in the middle with a small stone mill on it, and a tricycle parked nearby with two large pots on it. On this table, there was a large basin with flour that hadn't been mixed yet.

"I had leftover rice and two buns for dinner. You can have them to tide you over. I'll go buy some ready-to-eat food."

"No need, no need. There's nothing good to buy at this time. Let's cook rice. There's pork in this bag from Dad yesterday. It's already cooked, just sprinkled with salt. Let's stir-fry it; it'll be quick."

Mei Qiuping and Feng Yiping ate the buns with the leftover dish, while Feng Zhenchang washed the rice and cooked it. He took the meat out of the bag, washed it, and stir-fried it with chili peppers, very skillfully!

Life really does change a person.

In the past, Feng Zhenchang wouldn't even go near the stove at home. He only helped wash dishes during the New Year, and even then, it was rare. If he found a grain of sand in his rice, he would complain for half a day. If the food was too salty or too bland, he would criticize it.

Compared to the busy figure in front of him, the old Feng Zhenchang was like a different person.

They were both really hungry. Before the rice was ready, they were already eating the stir-fried dishes with chopsticks. By the time the rice was done, a third of the dishes were gone.

Feng Zhenchang sat on a stool with his feet up, holding a teacup, watching them eat ravenously. "Why do you always try to save a few bucks? Why didn't you buy more food before getting on the bus?"

"How could I not buy anything? But you know, I can't eat much when I'm on the bus."

After eating, Feng Yiping cleared the table, Feng Zhenchang continued kneading the dough, and Mei Qiuping went to the inner room to tidy up, taking things from the upper bunk and preparing the bed for Feng Yiping.

Finally, they had to pick out about ten pounds of chestnuts, wash them, and cut a small opening in each one. This was a trick they had learned later, making it easier to peel them.

By the time everything was done, it was almost eleven.

Since they didn't know Feng Yiping was coming, they didn't have a mat. He slept directly on the sheet, which was a bit hot. The train passing by nearby was also noisy, but he was really tired. Listening to his parents talk about their business over the past few days, he fell asleep.

In the early morning, when it was still dim, Feng Yiping was woken up by the noise. The dim light from the door crack showed his parents talking in low voices outside.

He got out of bed in the dark, rubbed his eyes, and opened the door. His mother was making buns, and his father was grinding soy milk with the stone mill.

"Oh, did we wake you up? Go back to sleep. You don't get up this early at school," Mei Qiuping said, still working.

"No, I can't sleep once I'm awake. I'll help make buns!"

"Good, there's hot water on the stove. Go wash your face and brush your teeth first."

However, after struggling to make a pickled vegetable bun, he decided to switch with Feng Zhenchang. The bun he made was so unique that it couldn't be sold, only eaten by himself.

The stone mill wasn't difficult for Feng Yiping. After Feng Zhenchang taught him a few rounds, he learned quickly. But his hands got tired after a while, so he had to switch hands.

He also noticed that Feng Zhenchang washed his hands again before making buns, even though his hands were already clean from grinding soy milk.

It seemed they were very particular about hygiene now. Some habits were formed this way.

"When it's not hot, we can make buns and grind soy milk in the evening. In the morning, we just need to cook and steam them, so we can sleep a bit longer. But in this weather, if we make everything in the evening, it might go bad by morning," Mei Qiuping said while making buns.

After the buns were made, they were placed in the steamer and steamed over a high flame.

The soy milk was also ground. Feng Yiping helped Feng Zhenchang filter the soy milk with cheesecloth. After the buns were steamed, they put the soy milk on the stove to boil. Once it boiled, they let it cool, and when it was warm, they used a small ladle and an aluminum funnel to pour it into plastic bags, then tied the bags tightly.

By the time everything was done, they hurriedly ate breakfast and left with the tricycle, already past seven.

Feng Zhenchang rode the tricycle in front, and Feng Yiping followed behind, pushing.

Over the past few days, they had some regular customers along the way. When they saw the tricycle, they would come out to buy buns and soy milk. A few elderly people even asked about Feng Yiping.

At the entrance of a residential area, they stopped for a while. Feng Zhenchang said, "Schools are on break now, and not many students are staying on campus. They wake up late, so it's fine to come a bit later."

He was right. If it weren't for the university town being their main market and the chestnuts being bought there, they wouldn't need to go there during the holidays.

So, they sold as they went. By the time they reached the flower bed under the big tree at the entrance of the music college, it was almost nine, and they had sold about half the buns.

The fat owner of the small store they often called over, "Why are you so late today? Oh, this is your son, the middle school student who published articles in magazines at a young age?"

Feng Yiping immediately gave a standard eight-tooth smile, "Hello, Uncle!"

"Hehe, hello," the man said while drinking soy milk. "Are you helping out during the summer break? Your parents work hard. You must study hard and go to university in the provincial capital in the future."

"I will, Uncle," Feng Yiping replied with a childlike smile.

It seemed his parents were boasting about his achievements to everyone.

The tricycle didn't stop for long. Even though it was past breakfast time, students still came to buy buns and soy milk, many still half-asleep. Few bought just one, usually several, definitely for their classmates. A bag of soy milk usually came with at least two buns.

So, in less than an hour, the soy milk and buns were all sold out.

They then switched to the chestnut pan, adding river sand, tea oil, maltose, and chestnuts in the right proportions and stir-frying them. Soon, a sweet aroma spread.

The sun was strong, but they were relatively cool under the big tree. However, not many people bought chestnuts. Only a few girls came out and bought about two pounds. Feng Zhenchang said that when school was in session, they could sell at least ten pounds around lunchtime.
