Chapter 4: Cats are Hard to Raise
Yu Linfei also couldn’t understand why he was so interested in this black cat named Second Fluff. He was rarely interested in pets. Most of his spare time was usually spent playing golf with a few friends or watching documentaries at home.
Spending so much time on a cat that didn’t even like him? –– This was something that Yu Linfei had never thought about before.
But when he put Second Fluff, who was anxiously meowing in the basket, into his car, he was in a good mood.
“Why are you meowing?” He touched the little black cat’s back with his hand, but quickly retracted it when claws reached out to scratch him. Yu Linfei played with the Second Fluff’s puffed up fur, his tone teasing.
“Meow!” Glancing disdainfully at Yu Linfei, Wen Cheng directly turned his butt towards this man who made his mood extremely complicated.
“… Oh, he’s got quite a temper.” Looking at Wen Cheng’s tsundere (1) appearance, Yu Linfei smiled again. His smile was graceful and gentle, just like a lover in love. “Is it a little male cat or a little female cat?”
With that, Wen Cheng’s upper body was grabbed before he could react, being held up in front of Yu Linfei.
“Ah, it’s a boy,” Yu Linfei said with an unusually crafty smile, staring at Wen Cheng’s abdomen.
“Meow meow meow!!!” Boy your sister!!! His self-esteem taking a hit from Yu Linfei’s actions, Wen Cheng’s angry fur explosion was even worse. He didn’t just meow this time, but he also tried to scratch at Yu Linfei with his claws.
“… Ai, are you still shy?” It seemed that he unexpectedly understood what Wen Cheng meant. Yu Linfei’s smile became a little evil, and he actually reached out to… touch Wen Cheng’s… little brother.
“Meow!!!” Wen Cheng was furious! He knew that nothing good would happen after going with Yu Linfei! He directly killed him in the last life, and in this life!! After becoming a cat, he touched him so casually! Dignity!! Moral integrity!! He wanted to kill Yu Linfei!!!
Of course, Wen Cheng had already lost his mind, and thought that as a little milk cat, the only way he could kill Yu Linfei was to use his eyes to glare to death.
“Don’t be angry, good boy. It was just a joke,” Yu Linfei comforted, seeing that Wen Cheng’s fur was really puffed up. He looked at the little black cat struggling in his hands, and felt for the first time that the choice to take him home was right. If there was this kitten at home, it definitely would bring a lot of personality.
Putting Wen Cheng back in the basket, Yu Linfei covered the basket with a blanket from He Yi and started the car.
His anger was unexpectedly and mercilessly ignored. Wen Cheng forced himself to calm down and began to seriously think about how to live from now on.
First of all, he didn’t want to let Yu Linfei raise him. It was okay to meet him once, but Wen Cheng couldn’t accept living with the murderer who killed him everyday. Every time he saw Yu Linfei smile, it reminded Wen Cheng of the last smile Yu Linfei showed him before he died.
The constant warmth, consistent elegance, and indulgent eyes had turned into apathetic aversion. When the dagger was stabbed into his chest, his hand didn’t even tremble.
Wen Cheng and Yu Linfei had been together for three years. Naturally, he knew something about this man who looked so gentle when he smiled… Wen Cheng knew that although Yu Linfei looked gentle, there was ruthlessness and pride embedded deep into his bones. He could give everyone a gentle smile, but deep in his heart, his mood was stable and unaffected.
Wen Cheng had once thought that he was a special existence in Yu Linfei’s eyes. It wasn’t until the moment of his death that he realized that no one, including him, had really walked into Yu Linfei’s heart.
Now, Wen Cheng knew that even if he was a little kitten, even if he seemed to have been gifted by Yu Linfei’s good friend, if he really annoyed Yu Linfei… it would definitely end badly for him.
So he had to escape from Yu Linfei…
Wen Cheng cautiously stuck his head out of the blanket. Looking out at the snow-covered street outside the car window, he quietly dispelled the idea of becoming a wild cat. Let’s not talk about if he had the ability to escape from Yu Linfei. Even if he did, could he really live like a cat? Looking for food in the garbage? Eating rats in the sewers?
––It was impossible. Wen Cheng knew himself very well. He would rather suffer living with Yu Linfei than beg for food as a wild cat.
“Want to be a wild cat?” Suddenly hearing the dry question, Wen Cheng stiffly turned his head. He looked at Yu Linfei expressionlessly driving the car and thought that it might’ve been an auditory illusion.
“Want to be a wild cat? Little black cat?” However, it turned out that it wasn’t Wen Cheng’s hallucination. He looked at Yu Linfei in horror as he turned his head slightly, showing a steady smile. “Hmm?”
… Was Yu Linfei a monster?? How did he know what he was thinking?? Horrified by Yu Linfei’s smile, he gave a weak meow and lowered his head, not daring to look at Yu Linfei again.
“It’s cold outside.” Yu Linfei didn’t look at Wen Cheng anymore, looking at the red light in front of him instead. His tone seemed casual with no threat, but what he said chilled Wen Cheng to his bones. “And if you want to sneak out and then get caught by me… it’ll be very bad.”
“…” He dared not answer again. Wen Cheng had his head in the basket, burying his head in his two plush claws. For the first time, he really felt that Yu Linfei was abnormal.
“I could really love cats.” Yu Linfei’s face remained undisturbed. He seldom smiled in places where no one was around. “I can give cats anything they want to eat and let them live in a good place, but the cat has to listen to me, do you understand?”
Wen Cheng still didn’t answer.
“Kitten?” Yu Linfei called softly, but it made Wen Cheng shake.
“Meow,” he called hoarsely. Wen Cheng felt that he was quickly going crazy… At that time, he hadn’t realized… that one meow sold him out as being completely able to understand Yu Linfei’s words.
It was really a strange cat that could understand his words. Yu Linfei drove the car seriously, his thoughts emotionless. He could meet such an interesting thing in such a boring time… How lucky.
After driving for half an hour, the car finally arrived at its destination. Yu Linfei put on his scarf and gloves, held the basket in his arms, and got out of the car.
Wen Cheng was half-asleep in the basket. He had shrunk in the middle of the soft basket that He Yi made for him, just like a small black ball of hair. The little belly going up and down with his breath was very cute. When Yu Linfei quietly opened the basket, he had to resist the desire to poke it with his finger.
“It’s really…” So cute. Yu Linfei didn’t say those words, in fact… he felt that his current state was really strange… it was just a little milk cat… why was he so interested?
“What’s his name?” Without thinking too much about why he was so interested in the kitten, Yu Linfei knocked on the edge of the basket and said to himself, “Just call him… Little Black is good.” (2)
While sleeping, Wen Cheng who hadn’t gotten rid of the name Second Fluff yet, immediately fell into the abyss of Little Black… Wen Cheng once seriously thought about if a white cat was called Little White, and a black cat was called Little Black, what would a black and white cat be called? The answer to this ultimate problem was, of course, perfectly solved when he met a cat named Zebra…
Putting the sleeping Little Black on the sofa in the living room, Yu Linfei began to think about how to let the kitten be okay with staying in the basket tonight. After all, the things prepared by his subordinates would be delivered tomorrow.
“You ate at home just now, so you shouldn’t need to eat.” Taking off the blanket wet with melted snow, he replaced it with another and sat on the sofa. He began to watch the little black cat, who was still in the basket.
Only a few months old, the body hadn’t yet grown, and the whole bone structure seemed thin and tiny. It seemed like it could be broken with a pinch of your fingers. The black fluff on the body wasn’t too long and was very good to touch, and the soft meow… Thinking of this, Yu Linfei involuntarily reached out his finger and touched the tip of Little Black’s wet nose.
… Disturbed by his dream, Wen Cheng wrinkled his face, wiped his nose with his little claws, and went back to sleep.
“Sound asleep.” Yu Linfei pinched a small black paw in his hand, pressing a small pink meat pad in the middle and making the claws hidden inside the paw come out.
“I’ll take you to get your nails cut when I have time.” Looking at the small nails that weren’t sharp, Yu Linfei said to the sleeping kitten. “In case you catch me when I can’t avoid it and I get angry…”
What would happen when he got angry? Yu Linfei didn’t know either. He only knew that if he really got angry, it would never be a pleasant thing. After all, anyone who’d seen him angry would never want to see him another time.
“Good night then, kitten.” Yu Linfei kissed the kitten’s paw before standing up, putting a blanket over the basket and moving the basket to the inner part of the sofa. He was a little afraid that the kitten would fall when he woke up and crawled out of the basket though.
The more he thought about it, the more dangerous it seemed. Hesitating for a moment, Yu Linfei finally walked into his bedroom with the basket.
Looking at the king size bed, he put the basket at the head of the bed. If the little black cat woke up and wanted to climb out, he would be able to find out immediately. Yu Linfei figured that he should take a bath now.

Translator Notes: I wanted to share, this chapter was actually locked on jjwxc because Yu Linfei poked the cat’s little brother hahaha. Some censor was like nuh uh that’s inappropriate no one can see.
Anyways, so begins Yu Linfei’s descent from a cold president archetype into a crazy cat lady.
Thanks so much to the lovely Aylik for editing!
傲娇 or “aojiao” is a loanword from Japanese “tsundere”, which I figured was well-known enough to use. Just in case you don’t know, it refers to someone presenting as blunt or unfriendly, but they’re warm and cuddly inside. This is Yu Linfei’s name for Wen Cheng from now on. The pinyin is Xiao Hei, very direct name!
