Chapter 3

I was a bit confused and once again thought about the story Ahui told us yesterday — did we offend someone in the dilapidated temple on Mang Mountain, which is why we ended up like this?
Otherwise, why did I feel that Ahui's eyes were exactly the same as those of the guy in the black robe when I saw him yesterday?
Wang Lei and I stared at each other for a long time. After a while, he still said somewhat disbelievingly, "No way, Ahui is superstitious, maybe he was hypnotizing himself? Don't worry, we'll be fine."
I glanced at him, wanting to argue, but my head was burning, and I had no energy. I felt drowsy and fell asleep again.
I slept until it was dark. During this time, I was vaguely aware of being given an IV, but I never fully woke up. In the evening, a chubby nurse woke me up, telling me I hadn't eaten all day and that I should at least have something to eat. She asked if I wanted her to order takeout for me.
I nodded. After a quick dinner, my whole body ached, but I couldn't stay in bed all day. I somehow managed to get up and, for some reason, went to the window.
I first looked at the flower bed below, which had already been cleaned up.
I couldn't see Ahui's body; I only saw a dark, black thing, unsure if it was blood.
Speaking of blood, there was a spot on the windowsill, about the size of a thumb. I glanced at it and noticed that under the black blood, there was a twisted pattern. I didn't know what it was, but it looked strange.
I stared at it for a while, and the image of Ahui looking back at me when he jumped last night popped into my head.
I shivered, feeling more and more scared. I went to the nurse's station and asked the nurses to change my room. Otherwise, I wouldn't stay here and would check out.
The nurses at the station were in a bad mood because of the patient who jumped yesterday. My request only made them more irritable. They explained a bunch of reasons to me but refused to change my room.
I argued with them for a long time, eventually feeling dizzy and being helped back to my room.
Unable to change rooms, I had someone check every light in the room to make sure they were all on. I also repeatedly instructed them not to turn off any lights. The nurses, having no choice, had to agree to my request.
After they left, I told Wang Lei that we needed to take shifts tonight, one for the first half of the night and one for the second half, to make sure nothing happened.
Wang Lei, seeing my nervousness, had no choice but to agree, saying he would take the first half of the night.
I had slept all day and should have been energetic, but I felt drowsy again after a while, as if something was pressing down on my head.
After an unknown amount of time, I felt cold all over, and I suddenly woke up. I looked around and saw that the room was pitch black, and I couldn't see anything. After a while, my eyes adjusted to the darkness, and I suddenly noticed someone standing by the window.
My heart raced, and I looked closely. The person turned around and gave me a grim smile.
It was Wang Lei.
That was the last time I saw Wang Lei...
Fly!
When Wang Lei jumped from the windowsill, I was completely stunned, unable to speak or move. My mind was filled with the look in his eyes as he left.
There was something indescribable in his eyes, a mix of mockery and ridicule.
It felt like an arrow piercing my heart.
Pain!
After a while, I came to my senses, frantically pressing the nurse's call button and screaming, "Help! Someone jumped! Help..."
Later, people told me that I looked like I had gone crazy, falling straight off the bed, convulsing and foaming at the mouth.
In fact, I was genuinely scared.
Two nights in a row, I had seen two people jump from this window. Who could handle that?
Moreover, before jumping, Wang Lei, though he didn't speak, opened his mouth.
Afterward, I carefully thought about it and felt he might have said, "Don't worry, you're going to die anyway..."
I was plunged into a state of immense panic. Later, I felt the room spinning, and the lights suddenly turned on. Many people in white coats were moving around me, making my head spin.
Someone was slapping my face, but I couldn't speak.
After an unknown amount of time, when I gradually came to my senses, I saw a beautiful woman with red lips, making my heart race.
I instinctively wanted to pucker up, but then I heard a female police officer say, "The patient seems to have woken up."
I came to my senses, realizing the police were back.
The two police officers who questioned me were the same ones, both with stern faces, as if I owed them money. However, at that moment, I was filled with resentment and wasn't afraid of them.
Why?
Yesterday, I had told them that something was strange, but they dismissed it, attributing Ahui's death to suicide. This made things easier for them, but did they consider the living, who were in constant danger?
Even a commoner has his limits. After I coldly recounted what had happened, the older police officer, somewhat dissatisfied, said to me, "Your colleague is dead, and you don't seem sad at all..."
I clenched my teeth and glared at him, "He didn't have to die. I asked to change rooms yesterday. If it had been changed, nothing would have happened!"
The older police officer glanced at the female officer, who nodded and said, "He did request a room change yesterday, but the hospital didn't have any available rooms, so it wasn't approved."
The older police officer asked with interest, "Why did you want to change rooms?"
I told him that the room felt eerie, making me uncomfortable, and I felt someone was trying to harm me...
The older police officer asked for reasons, so I recounted the discussions I had with Ahui and Wang Lei. The female officer frowned and said, "Superstition," but the older police officer, who had been unresponsive, suddenly became serious and asked if I had any evidence.
I shook my head, saying I didn't know, just a feeling.
Solving cases can't rely on feelings, but the older police officer seemed to recall something. He walked around the room, poking around the bathroom and examining the windowsill, seemingly looking for something.
In the end, he squatted down and stuck his head under Wang Lei's bed.
From my bed, I saw him stiffen, as if he had seen something strange.
The older police officer called the female officer to take a photo with the flashlight. They looked at it, and their faces turned pale. The female officer asked who had done it, but the older police officer shook his head and went to check Ahui's bed.
They took another photo.
Then they came to my bed, and the older police officer leaned down.
Their actions made me nervous, and I asked what was going on. The older police officer shook his head and said nothing.
He then showed me a photo on his phone, "On the back of those two beds, there is this pattern. Look, do you recognize it?"
I stared at it. The pattern was irregular, like a child's scribble, but in the center were two black dots, like eyes.
The pattern was bright red, and I didn't know what it was made of.
I shook my head, saying I didn't know. The older police officer wasn't surprised and instructed the female officer to go back to the station and find someone to analyze it.
Seeing that they were about to leave, I hurriedly grabbed the older police officer's hand, saying, "Don't go, what about me?"
The older police officer tried to reassure me, "Bro, don't believe in those baseless things. We need to wait for the investigation. Besides, there's nothing under your bed, right?"
I wasn't fooled, saying, "If there's something under my bed, I won't be here; I'll be in the morgue."
The older police officer couldn't persuade me, so he had the nurses arrange a room change for me. After all, two people had died in the same room, and it was bad luck, not helping the patients' recovery.
After coordination, I was moved to a room on the fourth floor. I actually wanted to stay on the first floor, but it was the outpatient area, and they couldn't arrange it.
When I moved, I stood by the window for a long time, wondering if I would die if I fell from here.
My conclusion was — if there was a fire safety net below, I might survive.
Otherwise, sigh...
I changed rooms in the middle of the night. The next morning, I discovered that one of my roommates was a colleague from my company, Zhang from the finance department.
He was responsible for attendance and was a nodding acquaintance. In this situation, we felt a sense of shared suffering. When he asked about the recent jumpers, he shivered.
I asked Zhang if he had noticed anything strange recently, and he shook his head, saying no.
Hearing this, I felt a bit relieved.
In the afternoon, someone from the company came to visit us, but it wasn't the second boss; it was someone from the administration. They showed a bit of concern and then left. Then the police came and questioned us for a long time, checked us, and left without saying much.
In the evening, Zhang's sister and brother-in-law came to bring him food.
When they talked about the incident, his brother-in-law frowned, saying, "Maybe it's a curse?"
