Chapter 7

In the instant the light went out, I instinctively ran towards the morgue door. For some reason, something had appeared on the previously clear passage, and I hastily retreated, bumping into it.

Clang!

I didn't know what I had hit, but my knee suddenly felt a sharp pain, and I rolled to the ground.

The floor was cold tiles, and I lay there, feeling a chill. Officer Lin's startled cry came from nearby, so I hurriedly moved towards her. After a lot of effort, I finally touched her, but she quickly grabbed me with a wrestling move and slammed me to the ground, a punch aimed at my head.

Don't let Officer Lin's good looks fool you; her punches were quite vicious. A hook aimed at my face made me shout loudly to remind her not to hurt me by mistake.

The punch stopped just before my eyes, and then I saw light. Officer Lin had taken out her phone to shine it.

Confirming it was me, Officer Lin glared at me and asked angrily what I was doing, suggesting I was trying to take advantage of the darkness. I was speechless and said, "Only a ghost would want to take advantage of you. I was running to the door and hit something. I heard you shout, so I came to find you—why did the light go out?"

Officer Lin was also nervous and asked, "Yeah, why did the light go out? Did the fuse blow?"

Under the cold light of the phone, I saw her face was stiff and cold, probably due to the tension. My mind was a bit blank, but I soon came to my senses, looked around, and whispered, "Officer Lin, where's Luo Ping?"

Luo Ping?

At this moment, Officer Lin recalled and looked around with her phone. Luo Ping, who had been with us just a moment ago, was now nowhere to be seen.

If this were any other place, I might not have been too worried, but here, it was different.

Where were we?

The morgue!

Some people might only come here once in their lives, and that would be with their eyes closed. This place sees people come in and out every day, the incoming ones just having passed away, and the outgoing ones heading to the crematorium.

Such a place is full of yin energy, and even those who don't believe in ghosts find it ominous.

What was I thinking, coming here with that lunatic?

Officer Lin called out to Luo Ping a few times, but there was no response. I instinctively looked towards the door and saw that what I had hit was a gurney, with someone lying on it, apparently having slid into the corridor.

I shivered, feeling something damp on my waist. Looking down, I saw dark yellow sticky liquid and blood on my clothes.

What had I hit?

With Luo Ping missing, I didn't dare stay here and wanted to leave the morgue. But Officer Lin grabbed my sleeve and said sternly, "Don't panic. Luo Ping is missing; we should wait for him to come back."

I thought about the past few days and couldn't stay. I smiled bitterly and said, "Wait for him? I might lose my life..."

Officer Lin glanced at me disdainfully and said, "Wang Ming, are you a man?"

I knew she was trying to provoke me, but being looked down upon by a beautiful woman made me angry. I gritted my teeth and said, "Whether I'm a man or not doesn't matter. The key is whether the person you invited is reliable. He said he would find the cause in the morgue, but now he's gone. Where could he have gone? Could he be lying on that bed? This..."

I pointed at the bed blocking the corridor and instinctively stopped speaking.

That's right, Luo Ping disappeared, and the bed suddenly appeared in the corridor. How could this be a coincidence?

Officer Lin also thought of this and said, "Go lift that white sheet and see who's lying there!"

Who could be lying there?

In the morgue, who else would want to lie on a bed that has held countless dead bodies?

Could it really be Luo Ping?

I was hesitant and looked at Officer Lin in her uniform, shivering and saying, "You're a police officer, why don't you go?"

Officer Lin instinctively hugged her chest and glared at me, "I'm a girl too..."

Despite her strong demeanor and profession, I felt she was very capable. Her showing a bit of weakness made me feel brave. I suppressed my fear, cautiously approached the bed, and after a long time, finally touched the pale white sheet.

Under Officer Lin's watchful eyes, I took a deep breath and suddenly pulled it off.

When the white sheet was completely pulled away, a pale, bloodless face was revealed. Seeing his high nose, I shivered.

Luo Ping!

This person was indeed Luo Ping.

Just a moment ago, he was lively and talking about helping me, but now he was lying on a gurney used for storing bodies, looking as if he were dead.

I couldn't quite believe it and instinctively touched his nose to check for a pulse.

Silence!

Cold and icy, my finger felt no breath, not even a hint of warmth.

Oh my God, a dead body?

I took a few steps back, remembering that I had hit the gurney, leaving marks on my clothes. He looked like he had been dead for a long time, yet he had been talking to us just a moment ago. What was going on?

I looked back at Officer Lin, who was also terrified but tried to suppress her fear. She came forward and examined Luo Ping's body.

He had been dead for several days.

She must have learned some forensic medicine in school. She turned to me and said, "I don't know. He was just a match I met; I don't know much about him..."

I didn't have time to blame her or figure out the details. I quickly said, "Forget about it. Let's get out of here. Otherwise, we might end up in the cabinets too."

Officer Lin was a police officer, but she was also a normal girl.

If she encountered a criminal, she might use her training to deal with it, but with this, she wasn't much better than me. Hearing my suggestion, she nodded frantically.

We reached a consensus and carefully bypassed the gurney, heading towards the morgue door.

The morgue was in the basement of the hospital, designed to be narrow to maintain a low temperature. From the rows of cold storage cabinets to the door, there was a long, narrow corridor, with an iron door at the exit, giving the impression of a safe.

We bypassed the gurney and almost ran to the iron door, but when we tried to open it, something made the hair on my body stand up.

The iron door of the morgue was locked from the outside.

I was overwhelmed by fear and frantically pulled at the door, but it wouldn't budge. Officer Lin remembered the old man who guarded the morgue door and started pounding on it, calling out in a trembling voice.

There was no response from outside.

We pounded, shouted, and called for help frantically for a few minutes, then suddenly stopped.

We listened carefully.

Outside, a faint sound began. At first, we didn't notice it, but when we quieted down, we heard someone dragging heavy footsteps towards us, and a sound like a wild animal's growl came from their throat.

This sound was truly terrifying, and we didn't know what to do.

I would bet 100 yuan that this was not the old man who guarded the morgue.

Officer Lin and I looked at each other and instinctively leaned against the iron door, looking into the dark morgue. The emergency exit light emitted a faint green glow, and our hearts beat wildly.

For some reason, I instinctively held Officer Lin's hand.

Her hand was a bit cold, but it gave me the warmth of a living person. Officer Lin didn't push me away but held my hand tightly, as if afraid of losing it.

In this desperate situation, we leaned on each other, warming each other.

At this moment, I felt a sudden sense of happiness.

If it were any other time, someone like me might never have the chance to hold Officer Lin's hand, as we were from different worlds. But now, she was so close to me that I felt I could reach out and embrace her.

Of course, I didn't dare to take advantage of a police officer.

Just as I held Officer Lin's hand, I suddenly heard a low voice from the dark morgue, "Old Wang, Old Wang..."

Was someone calling my name?

The voice was very faint, almost inaudible, so I couldn't tell who it was. But after a moment, I felt an itch in my ear, and Ah Gui's voice whispered, "Old Wang, let's go. We've been waiting for you. Hurry up..."
