Chapter 5

This was the first time Su Yuan had exposed her private parts to someone else. Although the instrument made her feel unfamiliar, she still felt very uncomfortable, as if ants were gnawing at her body, causing a tingling and itchy sensation.
Then her body trembled as something touched her most sensitive area. It turned out that Dr. Li, wearing rubber gloves, had spread the sides of the crease. Inside, it was tender and shiny, soft and fresh in color, and faintly, one could see the intact membrane.
Dr. Li, with his extensive experience, quickly determined that the young girl had no pathological issues and soon finished the examination of her private parts. He then placed the stethoscope on Su Yuan’s abdomen to begin checking her internal organs.
“Ouch!!” The girl suddenly cried out.
Dr. Li frowned, placing the stethoscope back on her lower abdomen and asked, “Does it hurt here?”
Su Yuan nodded pitifully.
“Alright, you’ll need to get an ultrasound and a color Doppler ultrasound later. This isn’t urgent, but first, lift up your shirt.”
Su Yuan complied, pulling her thin top up to her chest. Dr. Li’s gaze fell on her almost flat chest. Why “almost”? Because when Su Yuan lay flat, one could faintly see a slight rise in the breast area, though it wasn’t very noticeable.
Dr. Li reached out and pressed down, and Su Yuan felt a significant pain, which she honestly described. The vitality of the grass was so strong that even if there was a stone slab blocking it, once it found a gap to sprout, it would grow uncontrollably.
Dr. Li nodded and then prescribed some tests for Su Yuan: urinalysis, ultrasound and color Doppler ultrasound, four immune tests for women, and six hormone tests. He didn’t order a chromosomal test, likely because he didn’t consider it necessary.
Su Yuan hurriedly went to get the tests done and returned after a long while with the test results.
Dr. Li first looked at the test results, which showed a lot of data below normal levels. Then he glanced at the ultrasound report and had a clear understanding. He diagnosed, “Your body has no organic problems, just delayed development.”
Su Yuan was stunned. Her body... had no problems?
Seeing her dazed expression, Dr. Li felt that this couldn’t go on. How could a good young girl be so “clueless”! Her condition needed to be taken seriously, so he sternly said, “Although the organs themselves are fine, your clitoris, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and mammary glands all show signs of delayed development. This is something to be cautious about; don’t be complacent. Additionally, you have mild anemia, and your estrogen levels are below normal, which can cause a chain reaction.”
Su Yuan listened blankly to Dr. Li’s warnings. He then prescribed some medication, including anti-androgens and oral estrogen.
Leaving the hospital, she walked back to school under the scorching sun.
Today’s examination cost her a lot of money, which was very painful. Fortunately, Dr. Li, seeing she was a student, didn’t take advantage of her. Besides the necessary medications, his advice was mainly about dietary therapy and exercise.
Even so, her wallet was significantly lighter. She often joked with others that one wouldn’t know how many illnesses they had until they got a check-up. Indeed, today’s examination revealed “delayed development,” which included several important organs and a lack of “estrogen.” How could she be lacking in that?
In the past, she never thought she would be deficient in such a thing! And the mild anemia, which she didn’t know about before.
In short, after leaving the hospital, Su Yuan felt as if she had just come out of a laboratory. Previously, she always wore a white coat to conduct experiments, but this time, she was the lab rat.
“What a capricious world!” she sighed to the sky.
Back at school, her stomach was growling in protest, so she went to the fast-food restaurant next to the dormitory to have lunch. On her way, she ran into Wang Ping, who was about to play basketball. Seeing Su Yuan carrying a plastic bag with a “red cross,” he asked in surprise, “What’s wrong? Are you sick?”
Seeing his concerned look, Su Yuan had to nod helplessly. She quietly rolled up the bag to avoid drawing attention. This illness couldn’t be made public!
“You just need more exercise. A big guy like you is as weak as a girl. Men should be like me, showing off strong biceps to display manliness!” He spun the basketball, showing off his dark skin, which made him look like he was from Africa.
Honestly, Su Yuan didn’t envy Wang Ping’s healthy skin; he was overly healthy. Compared to him, she preferred someone like Ji Yehao.
After saying goodbye to Wang Ping, she returned to Room 330, where a stack of new books was on the table, likely the textbooks Ji Yehao and others had picked up for her.
Hesitating for a moment, she finally opened the medicine box and swallowed a few pills with warm water. It was like treating a dead horse as if it were alive. She herself didn’t even know what she was thinking when she took the pills. Perhaps she wasn’t thinking at all, just following the doctor’s instructions out of habit.
She hid the medicine in the wardrobe and spread out the books to review.
The makeup exam was scheduled for 1:30 PM, and there was less than half an hour left.
Since there was still some time, she decided to cram a bit more.
Strangely, this “major illness” seemed to have made her brain work better. As she solved the calculus problems one by one, she found few that she couldn’t do. Su Yuan felt satisfied and attributed it to her all-night study session the previous night. But thinking about the strange changes in her body, her good mood was overshadowed by a cloud of uncertainty.
The makeup exam was held in Classroom NA110, lasting two hours. N stands for the northern campus, and A is the building code. Su Yuan entered the classroom ten minutes early and found that many students were taking the makeup exam, more than a third of the total. This course was clearly a trouble spot in college.
A stack of bound exam papers was distributed, and after the invigilator checked the students’ ID cards, the exam began.
The question types were fixed, with multiple-choice questions at the beginning, mostly testing basic knowledge. But looking at the frowning, teeth-grinding, and head-scratching expressions of the students around her, it was clear that the questions were quite difficult.
“Strange, they’re not that hard?” Su Yuan’s eyes widened in surprise. Had she underestimated the questions and not understood the traps?
Yes, that was very likely!
But after some thought, she decided to trust herself. There weren’t many multiple-choice questions, and she only hesitated on the last two.
Next came the fill-in-the-blank, true/false, calculation, and application questions, which seemed to be of medium difficulty. While other students were still stuck on the fill-in-the-blank section, Su Yuan had already reached the last section—proof questions.
There were two questions in total. The first one was to prove that if “x approaches positive infinity, lim f(x) = A,” then “x approaches 0+, lim f(1/x) = A.”
This wasn’t difficult.
The second question was to prove that the equation “xe^x = 1” has exactly one real root in the interval (0, 1).
It didn’t seem difficult either, so Su Yuan quickly wrote down her elegant and messy handwriting and submitted her paper.
After finishing the exam, Su Yuan knew that her brain had truly opened up. Especially for the second question, she remembered asking Ji Yehao about it before, and at the time, she didn’t fully understand his explanation, only knowing that the intermediate value theorem was needed. Now, she truly understood it.
Leaving the classroom, she couldn’t help but sigh, “Better late than never!!”
