Chapter 3

After observing for the whole morning, Lin Chao, combining the information he had from his future life, had a rough understanding of the basic characteristics of these corpses. He jotted them down in a small notebook:
Corpses: First stage of infection.
Strength: Three times that of an ordinary person.
Speed: Three times that of an ordinary person, but cannot jump.
Intelligence: Similar to that of an infant, with only the instinct to feed.
Vision: Blurry, unable to see clearly beyond ten meters.
Hearing: Impaired, the eardrums are severely rotten, and some corpses are deaf.
Weakness Analysis:
First: Fear of light, severely dehydrated bodies, can be driven away by high temperatures!
Second: No pain sensation, can be killed by throwing gasoline from a distance!
Third: Sense of smell is ten times that of an ordinary person, can be masked by other destructive odors...
After writing these down, Lin Chao couldn't help but marvel at how weak these early-stage corpses were. He could easily list more than three fatal weaknesses. If humans could adapt to their terrifying appearance and control their fear in the early stages, survival wouldn't be difficult.
Lin Chao didn't immediately start hunting. He decided to wait a few more days. It was still the early stages of the apocalypse, and many survivors were hiding in various buildings. If a so-called "pig teammate" suddenly shouted and alarmed all the corpses on the street, even he would be in danger.
Lin Chao returned to the first floor and continued practicing his shooting skills.
With ample food and water, Lin Chao and Lin Shiyu were living comfortably. Over these three days, Lin Chao had rigorously trained and had a perfect grasp of his body.
Lin Shiyu, on the other hand, spent her days in her laboratory. Unlike the strange experiments she used to do, she had been continuously testing the air and tap water, extracting small amounts of the virus for research to understand its characteristics, but with little success.
Lin Chao guessed she wanted to develop a cure herself. Although he knew it was unrealistic, he didn't stop her. In this cold apocalypse, without something to do, people could easily go crazy!
"Do you plan to hunt them?" At the breakfast table, Lin Shiyu frowned slightly. She had seen Lin Chao's hard training over the past few days and guessed this day would come, so she wasn't too surprised, just a bit worried. After all, these corpses were too fast and strong!
Lin Chao smiled calmly and said, "Don't worry, you've seen the notebook, they're not that scary."
"Why do you have to fight them?"
Lin Chao looked at her calmly and said, "Because it's the only way to survive."
Lin Shiyu was puzzled. The food and water here were enough for the two of them to live for two to three months. Why not just wait for the army to come? But seeing the determined and serious look in her brother's eyes, she knew she couldn't stop him.
"I'll wait for you at the door. If anything happens, retreat immediately!" Lin Shiyu chose to back down. After reading the notebook, her fear of these corpses wasn't as strong, but the thought of opening the door to kill them still made her anxious.
Lin Chao nodded and then armed himself.
First, he had to bring the iron rod. Next were the twenty throwing knives he had bought. They were not like the professionally forged throwing knives on TV; they were just some sharp little knives.
He carried three of them, tucking them into the seams of his pants, the weight just right, not affecting his speed. On the other side of his pants, he tied a hundred-yuan ornamental dagger. Although it was beautiful, it had too much iron content and would easily break in a brutal fight, but it was still somewhat useful.
Next, Lin Chao rolled some thin fashion magazines around his arms and wrapped them tightly with tape to serve as wrist guards.
Fighting corpses, the arms were the easiest to get injured. Even a tiny scratch could lead to infection of the entire arm and eventually the whole body.
After all preparations were complete, Lin Chao, holding the iron rod, came to the security door...
He took a deep breath.
He unlocked the security chain and gently pulled the door open. A cool breeze blew in, carrying a strong scent of blood and a faint smell of decay.
This familiar air...
Lin Chao felt as if he had returned to his future life, where he lived a life of constant danger and survival in the wilderness. The memories of those days flooded his mind, and his blood seemed to boil.
Lin Shiyu watched his back silently. She realized there was nothing she could do. This brother, whom she had practically raised, was now as tall and strong as a mountain!
"Please come back safely..." she prayed silently.
...
The empty street was littered with crashed cars. Large pools of dried blood, dark and black, did not attract the interest of the corpses.
The wandering corpses roamed the streets like ghosts. These were not Lin Chao's targets. Killing any one of them would cause enough noise to attract other corpses, and fighting on such a wide street was very disadvantageous. His target was a nearby residential building.
The building was only four stories high. The ground floor was a clothing store, and the upper floors were rented out. Various small ads and rental phone numbers were posted on the side walls.
Lin Chao didn't choose to go up from the first floor, as it was too dangerous. If he encountered a corpse on the stairs, with its superior height and incredible strength and speed, even with his S-level shooting skills, he would have no chance and would be bitten to death!
After using a stone to distract the nearby corpses, Lin Chao quickly came to the water pipe outside the building. These drainage pipes were very sturdy and could easily support his climb.
He inserted the iron rod diagonally into his belt and climbed up the pipe like a nimble monkey. In less than ten seconds, he reached the rooftop of the fourth floor, a speed that could break a Guinness record.
As soon as he reached the rooftop, Lin Chao smelled a strong odor of decay. He was immediately on alert and quickly drew the iron rod.
The rooftop was very spacious, with only some potted plants and drying clothes and quilts. The strong smell of decay was coming from a white quilt.
Lin Chao's gaze dropped, and behind the white quilt... there were a pair of slowly wandering feet!
As if sensing the human presence, the feet suddenly stopped. The next moment, a hoarse, eerie scream echoed, and the bamboo pole holding the quilt was knocked over. A young woman with disheveled hair pounced over, her eyes white, her face twisted and grotesque, half of her face covered in blood, and a piece of intestine hanging from her sharp teeth.
Lin Chao's eyes quickly scanned the area, and when he saw no other corpses on the rooftop, he breathed a sigh of relief.
One-on-one?
He remained calm, holding the iron rod. As the female corpse pounced, he suddenly stepped back, making her lunge miss.
Her body, due to inertia, stumbled forward a few steps.
At that moment!
Bang!
A cold light flashed in Lin Chao's eyes, and he suddenly raised the iron rod, chopping down like a blade!
The iron rod collided with her skull. The weight of the rod, combined with the speed of the swing and the force of the fall, was enough to crack a human skull!
The skull was the fatal point of the corpse. This was not wrong in the movies. The circulatory system of the corpse was dead, and it could live without a heart. The brain, however, was more complex. Even if most of the brain cells were dead, as long as the neural center remained, the bioelectric waves could control its movements. Therefore, destroying the neural center was the only way to kill it!
Roar!
The female corpse felt no pain. After instinctively regaining her balance, she pounced again, completely ignoring the blood flowing from her head, like a bloodthirsty demon!
Lin Chao turned his body, making a feint that misled her senses, causing her to miss again.
Bang!
Another heavy blow!
And it hit the same spot!
The top of the female corpse's head caved in, leaving a deep mark. If it were a living person, the pain would have been unbearable, but she felt nothing and continued to pounce.
Again, she missed!
Dealing with such unintelligent corpses, Lin Chao had hundreds of ways to confuse their senses, making their attacks ineffective.
If she didn't pounce with full force, her terrifying speed would allow her to stay close to Lin Chao, and even with his agility, he would be grabbed and bitten, as his speed was no match.
But the corpses were driven by instinct.
As soon as they smelled food, they would pounce without hesitation, even if it meant falling into a large pit, they wouldn't think to go around.
The corpses in the future were different. Their brain cells had regenerated, giving them new thoughts and intelligence on par with humans, making them much harder to kill with simple methods. Only with rich combat experience could they be defeated!
Bang!
The third blow landed!
This time, the female corpse's head exploded like a watermelon, white brain matter oozing out, covering her face. Her body stiffened as if electrocuted and then slowly fell to the ground.
Lin Chao wiped the brain matter off the iron rod on her clothes and then tore open her upper clothing. Her skin was pale but had rotted and was filled with the stench of a sewer.
