Lin Chao nodded gently.

The sharp gaze behind the door seemed to soften somewhat, and the door was opened to reveal a young man in camouflage uniform. His eyes quickly swept over the iron rod in Lin Chao's hand, then he said, "Did you come from outside? Has the government's support arrived?"

Lin Chao did not answer him but quickly entered the operating room. He immediately saw a pool of dark, startling blood on the floor. Next to the blood was a corpse with its head smashed in. In addition, five people were sitting in a corner: two doctors in white coats, one of whom wore glasses, a female doctor, and a female nurse. They all looked listless, clearly having been locked up for days without food, their stomachs rumbling with hunger.

The last person caught Lin Chao's attention.

This was a middle-aged man in camouflage uniform, with a strong and resolute face. His abdomen was bandaged with white gauze. Although his face was pale, his gaze was deep and calm, showing no signs of anxiety or despair.

Lin Chao's appearance startled the group. The middle-aged doctor with glasses looked at him in surprise and asked, "How did you get in? What about those man-eating monsters outside? Have they been driven away? Has the army arrived?"

Lin Chao had no interest in answering his rapid-fire questions. He quickly approached the operating table, his eyes scanning the area. He did not see his target but noticed some sharp surgical knives. He immediately selected a few and inserted them into the hidden pocket of his clothes.

"I'm asking you a question!" the middle-aged doctor said angrily.

Lin Chao did not look up, as if he hadn't heard.

At this moment, the young man in the military uniform who had opened the door came in and said in a deep voice, "The monsters are still outside. The two at the door were just killed by him."

This "him" clearly referred to Lin Chao.

Hearing this, the middle-aged doctor's body trembled. His gaze toward Lin Chao lost all anger and was filled with fear. This young man could actually kill those monsters, which was truly terrifying!

"Young man, I am the deputy director of Fukan. Can you take us out? Don't worry, I will give you a generous reward, one hundred thousand, no, one million RMB. Or you can name your price," said another older doctor, his eyes filled with eagerness.

Paper money?

Lin Chao ignored him.

"Brother, hello, my name is Chu Shanhe. May I ask what to call you?" the middle-aged man in camouflage, with a bandaged abdomen, looked at Lin Chao with a smile and said, "You can kill those monsters, which shows extraordinary skills. With the disaster now, many soldiers will surely die. Are you willing to join the army with me?"

Chu Shanhe?

Lin Chao's pupils constricted slightly, and he suddenly looked up at him.

This sudden reaction stunned everyone present. The young man in the military uniform immediately stepped in front of Chu Shanhe, looking at Lin Chao warily.

A look of shock appeared on Lin Chao's calm face. These three words had an incredibly strong impact. This was the most revered hero of the future, without a doubt!

Like most heroes, Chu Shanhe also died young, but his short life was filled with countless glories and honors.

He was one of the first pioneers, the first person to save a base city more than ten times, the first to kill an S-level monster, the first to reclaim a human city from zombies and monsters, and the first to dare to enter the "Abyss Zone 1" alone...

He made tremendous contributions to humanity. A general once said that without him, the overall combat strength of the Chinese region would have shrunk by thirty percent!

His death was also tragic. Despite his many honors, he did not like power and handed over the city he founded to his closest brother, who would manage it while he continued to fight and explore. However, his brother, a controversial figure who also made great contributions to humanity, eventually succumbed to the lure of power and plotted to frame him.

Feeling disheartened, he did not choose to seek revenge but, on the brink of death, entered the "Abyss Zone 1" alone, venting all his anger, pain, and frustration on those terrifying beings. He never returned. Years later, when someone entered the area again, they brought out his battle knife and placed it in front of his grave.

His brother, who had also made significant contributions to humanity, eventually gave up control of the city, filled with regret, and entered the abyss, choosing to die in battle!

Some said that if he had chosen to retaliate in anger before his death, the fight between the two brothers would have caused the deaths of many of their followers, potentially reducing the human population in the Chinese region by half in later key battles.

Instead, he chose to vent his anger and sorrow, fighting for humanity until his last breath, striving to kill as many monsters as possible.

Such selflessness was hard to believe, which is why he was a legend, revered and mourned by people.

Living in the future, Lin Chao struggled for survival every day and had no time to reminisce about these legendary figures, but he had heard of them. Seeing a living legend right in front of him, he felt a strange sensation.

He looked deeply at Chu Shanhe and said, "I don't like being bound by freedom. Sorry."

The middle-aged doctor's face turned sour. His earlier questions had been ignored by Lin Chao, but now he was seriously answering Chu Shanhe, which made him angry, though he dared not show it.

Chu Shanhe looked a bit regretful and said, "If you're interested in the future, you can come find me in the army."

Lin Chao nodded slightly.

"How did you get past those monsters?" the young man in the military uniform, seeing that Lin Chao had no ill intentions, asked curiously.

Lin Chao shook his head and did not answer, instead pointing to the corpse on the floor and asking, "Did you kill this one?"

"No, it was Captain Chu who killed it alone," the young female nurse in the corner said, her eyes shining. "At the time, Captain Chu was stitching up his abdomen when Doctor Zhao suddenly screamed in pain, knocking over the IV bottle. When he got up, he bit Doctor Song. Captain Chu reacted quickly, using a pair of scissors to pierce his head and kill him. Doctor Song took advantage of the chaos to run out and was... eaten by those things outside."

Lin Chao was somewhat surprised but then understood. No wonder he could rise to prominence; his reaction speed and decisive judgment were far beyond those of ordinary people.

Lin Chao asked, "Does anyone know where the molecular surgical knife for extracting genes is?"

"It's in the medical research lab on the roof," the young female nurse said curiously. "What do you need it for?"

Chu Shanhe's eyes flashed, and he looked deeply at Lin Chao.

Knowing the answer, Lin Chao turned and walked toward the door. He didn't have much time left; his hand was already rotting, and he could only fight with his left hand holding the iron rod.

"Where are you going?" The middle-aged doctor and the deputy director, seeing Lin Chao about to leave, felt panicked. With monsters outside, they had witnessed Doctor Song being torn apart right before their eyes, and they were terrified. They didn't want such a powerful person to leave.

"I'll go with you," Chu Shanhe said, struggling to stand up.
