The next day, Ling Yun woke up very early. Today was the day of his grand wedding, and he couldn't forget it. He sat up with a bit of drowsiness, the morning light was soft, but still bright enough to make his eyes squint.
The windows of the wooden house, which had been sealed the previous day, were now reopened. The quiet and orderly high family estate lay outside, the green bricks and tiles half-hidden in the shade of the willows and peach trees of southern Jiang. The estate was peaceful, like an ordinary resort, but last night's experience made him realize that this tranquility was not simple. There were fierce guards, and those pavilions that looked like scenic spots might actually be strong defensive arrow towers and watchtowers.
The estate seemed even more expansive than before, and Ling Yun took a while to shift his gaze.
Ling Yun shook his head and got off the bed. The morning was bright and warm, a perfect day. He casually put on his robe and didn't feel the slightest chill. Originally, he would have thought he would be at a loss with these ancient robes and wide sleeves, but strangely, as soon as he got the clothes, he naturally put them on, as if it were a subconscious habit. This made him a bit happy, perhaps it meant that the memory of this body was not completely lost, and habits like dressing were still retained. Maybe other memories were also still there. This was good for him, it meant he could find his "identity."
Dressed in a new set of blue silk clothes, he pushed open the door, took a few breaths of fresh air, and marveled at the air from a thousand years ago. To his surprise, he found that all the guards who had been "protecting" him near the small building were gone.
It seemed that after last night, Qianxue had withdrawn the guards. This was both expected and surprising. He realized he had underestimated Gao Qianxue. Thinking about it, at dusk, he would be marrying her and then spending their wedding night together, Ling Yun couldn't help but feel a bit dazed.
It all seemed too fast.
Although no one was watching him anymore, Ling Yun had already decided to stay, so he didn't think about leaving. However, he was a bit annoyed that no one was left behind. He was hungry but didn't know where to get breakfast.
Perhaps Mu Lan would bring breakfast as before, Ling Yun thought, so he didn't plan to wander around. Instead, he started exercising on the wooden walkway over the pond.
When Mu Lan arrived with the breakfast box, she saw Ling Yun doing push-ups on the ground.
"Miss, something's wrong, Yi Feng is..."
In the main hall of the Gao family estate, Gao Qianxue was holding the jade pendant with "Yi Feng" engraved on it, trying to find some clues. She had promised Yi Feng to help him find his identity, and she would keep her word. The sudden intrusion of the little girl, who was shouting, made her glare at her.
"What's the matter, shouting so loudly? I told you this morning that from now on, you should call Yi Feng 'groom' or 'husband,' not by his name or 'Master Yi,' as that's not proper. By the way, didn't I ask you to bring breakfast to Yi Feng? Why are you back so quickly? Did his injuries from last night worsen?"
"Master Yi, no, the groom, he's gone mad," Mu Lan said seriously.
"What?" Gao Qianxue was incredulous. Although Yi Feng had lost his memory and tried to leave last night, he was not a madman.
"Really, Miss, when I went to bring him breakfast, I saw him rolling on the ground. What else could it be but madness!" The little girl was very serious, even describing how Ling Yun was doing push-ups on the ground. But in her description, it seemed more like he was rolling on the ground.
Although she didn't believe Yi Feng was mad, Gao Qianxue still followed Mu Lan to the small wooden house. They hurried to the pond and willow trees at the corner of the Gao family estate, and from a distance, they saw Ling Yun had already finished his push-ups and was now gracefully practicing Tai Chi.
The sun was rising, and the golden morning light shone down. The mist rising from the pond, like a thin veil, intertwined with the light. Ling Yun stood under the pavilion in the center of the pond, practicing Tai Chi gracefully and elegantly, wearing a light blue robe with his hair casually tied up.
Mu Lan was surprised. Just a moment ago, Yi Feng was rolling on the ground, but now he was practicing a beautiful and elegant set of Tai Chi. She looked up at Gao Qianxue with a pout, saying softly, "He really was rolling on the ground just now..." Her voice grew softer, clearly even she didn't believe it herself.
Gao Qianxue held back Mu Lan, who wanted to immediately go and ask Ling Yun why he had embarrassed her, and pulled her back.
"Shh!" Gao Qianxue said with a light laugh. She found it interesting; Yi Feng was like a puzzle, becoming harder to understand. The set of Tai Chi he had just practiced was something she had never seen before, as graceful and elegant as he was, captivating to watch.
With such a rare opportunity to observe him, and with the wedding just half a day away, she wanted to take this chance to observe him more closely.
Ling Yun did two hundred push-ups and practiced a set of Tai Chi, but he still hadn't seen Mu Lan bring breakfast. His stomach was already growling with hunger.
While waiting, he leaned on the railing of the wooden walkway leading from the wooden house to the shore, watching the small fish in the pond bubble. He couldn't help but think about the other world. He told himself that he might never be able to return. He wondered how his parents, girlfriend, and friends were reacting. They probably thought he had drowned.
Leaning on the railing, he felt a sense of melancholy and began to recite Li Houzhu's "Yu Meiren" by the pond.
"When will the spring flowers and autumn moon end, how many past events do we remember? Last night the east wind blew again in the small building, the old country cannot be recalled under the bright moon!
"The carved railings and jade steps should still be there, but the beauty has changed. How much sorrow can you have? Just like the spring river flowing eastward."
On the opposite bank, under the willow trees, Gao Qianxue's eyes suddenly sparkled, her face changed, and she stood there in a daze. She muttered the words Ling Yun had just recited, "The old country cannot be recalled under the bright moon, the carved railings and jade steps should still be there, but the beauty has changed, but the beauty has changed..."
"Miss, does... does he know something?" Mu Lan was also amazed and looked at Gao Qianxue nervously.
Gao Qianxue's hands were tightly clasped together, her silver-streaked eyebrows raised. "Perhaps he is a descendant of a previous dynasty, maybe from the Northern Zhou, or the Southern Chen, or even the Western Liang!"
"Really?" Mu Lan whispered, "If he is a descendant of a previous dynasty, he would be a good match for Miss. Miss is a princess of the Great Qi, and marrying a prince or a duke would be perfect."
"Mu Lan, have you forgotten what your sister told you before? Never mention your past identity lightly," a voice came from behind them, and Gao Mingyue, dressed in blue, appeared.
Mu Lan quickly bowed to Gao Mingyue, "I am at fault, I spoke without thinking. Please forgive me, Miss... no, Second Miss!"
"Never mind, there's no one else here, but be more careful in the future, especially when there are outsiders. Remember, this is Yangzhou in southern Jiang, and Prince Yang Guang of the Sui dynasty is personally stationed here. If the news leaks, he won't let us go," Gao Qianxue spoke up for Mu Lan and then turned to her sister, "Why are you here so early?"
"I came to look for you, and when I heard you were here, I followed. What's the rush? You're getting married tonight, can't you wait a little longer?" Gao Mingyue joked. "By the way, since you're getting married today, shouldn't you introduce him to everyone in the estate?"
"Sure!" Gao Qianxue answered absentmindedly, her mind still on the words Ling Yun had recited. She looked at his tall figure in the distance and couldn't help but wonder, who is this man who saved her, was saved by her, and is about to become her husband?
