Chapter 2

6 min read1,605 words

Lin Bei's life in his previous incarnation was uneventful, and could be described with two words: plain and simple.

Kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, high school, and university—all passed by uneventfully for Lin Bei. He never got into fights with his classmates, never had a teenage romance, and his first kiss was in college. The girl he kissed later became his wife, named Gao Rou.

At the age of twenty-four, he got married, and in the same year, he took the civil service examination. His scores were average, but he was fortunate enough to secure a position as a researcher in a small forestry bureau, a stable job. He never changed positions, and at twenty-six, he had a daughter, a girl named Lin Rou. When he was transported to this new world, Lin Rou was already six years old.

At the thought of his parents, wife, and daughter, Lin Bei felt a sharp pain in his heart. He was quite satisfied with his previous life. Lin Bei was the type of person who was content with the status quo. Working at the forestry bureau, he volunteered to be dispatched to the Shuangya Mountain Nature Reserve for research, where he was surrounded by nature every day, making his heart even more tranquil. Although Gao Rou sometimes complained about his lack of ambition, she still fulfilled her duties as a wife, taking care of the elderly, her husband, and their daughter.

"Isn't it usually in novels that one has to have deep grudges or die unexpectedly to be transported to another world?" This strange thought crossed Lin Bei's mind.

Lin Bei's life was plain and simple, so it was also peaceful. Upon careful reflection, he recalled that there was indeed a strange incident before his transportation.

The Shuangya Mountain Nature Reserve had a subordinate bureau, officially named the Shuangya Mountain Forestry Bureau. Lin Bei was dispatched by the city's main bureau and did not seek power or conflict, so even as a small researcher, no one dared to offend him.

Lin Bei remembered the day he and Xiao Zhang returned from Shuangya Mountain. They both felt the urge to relieve themselves, and since they were still far from the bureau, they did so in the forest. In the forest, they saw a snake.

It was a very peculiar snake, and neither Lin Bei nor Xiao Zhang recognized it. The place where the snake lay was covered with snake fruits. When the two approached, the strange snake almost attacked them. They cautiously ran away.

Snake fruits are a common plant in Sichuan, not apples, but a small, red, finger-sized plant. Sometimes they are called goldfish fruits because when picked and shaped, they resemble the large eyes of a goldfish.

After they ran out, Xiao Zhang mentioned a legend, saying that if a snake eats snake fruits, it is usually a spirit snake. Fortunately, they ran fast, or they might have been bitten. Lin Bei just smiled at the time.

If there was a strange event before his transportation, it was this one. After all, now he had become a snake, and before his transportation, he had encountered a snake. Perhaps there was some mysterious connection between the two, but Lin Bei knew deep down that these were just excuses. After all, such absurd events needed a reason, and this would make him feel a bit more at ease.

"Since I'm here, I might as well make the best of it. I hope there's still a 'me' living in the modern world."

Lin Bei loved his wife deeply. Although Lin Rou was only six, she was smart and well-behaved, and Lin Bei doted on her like a precious treasure. Suddenly becoming a snake and not knowing what era he was in, feeling separated from his family, Lin Bei, despite his calm nature, felt an urge to cry.

"The Pavilion Chief is here!!"

"Move aside, let the Pavilion Chief come and see."

"Pavilion Chief, come and look. This snake is huge, could it be a monster?"

"Should we let Old Wang take a look?" This Old Wang was likely a shaman.

"Don't worry, I'll take a look." Pavilion Chief Li said.

The sky above darkened, and Lin Bei instinctively looked up. He saw several heads peering down from the well's opening, including Pavilion Chief Li, whom Lin Bei had 'seen' earlier.

Lin Bei's movement startled the men who had been staring at him. After all, Lin Bei was now a snake, or rather, a python, with a girth as thick as an adult's waist. Coiled up, his long body was like a small mountain. Although his head was relatively small, his snake eyes were as big as ping-pong balls, like small lanterns, which were quite terrifying.

"Ah, the snake is awake, get the stones, quickly bring the stones over."

"Quickly seal the well."

"Coming, move aside."

Several men carried stones larger than millstones, rushing over from somewhere.

Pavilion Chief Li's face showed shock. Such a large snake was something he had never seen before. Although there were mountains behind Dongshan Village with many wild animals, and snakes and insects were common, the largest snakes were usually only about ten feet long. The snake in the well was several times larger.

Lin Bei saw the men carrying the large stones and panicked. If they sealed the well with stones, he would be trapped and starve to death. Although he had become a snake and was in an unknown era, he did not want to die. So, Lin Bei decided to act.

Controlling his snake body was still a bit awkward, but he could manage basic movements. He stretched his body and tried to leap out of the well.

"Ah!!"

"Heaven!!"

"Kill it!!"

As Lin Bei moved, he realized the power of his snake body. It was about twelve meters long, and with a single push, he managed to stretch his head out of the well, terrifying the men gathered around. They fell backward in fear.

"Ah!!" A sharp scream rang out. A woman in her twenties fainted, her eyes rolling back, having been scared by Lin Bei's head emerging from the well.

As Lin Bei's head emerged from the well, the scene became chaotic. The men who had been carrying stones dropped them and picked up sticks, ready to attack, but their faces were pale, and their legs trembled. It was clear they were barely holding on to consciousness.

While the men were terrified, Lin Bei had a moment to observe his surroundings. It seemed to be a village with wooden and stone houses, very ancient and primitive, and quite dilapidated. It matched the ancient architecture he had seen on TV, and Lin Bei no longer doubted his new reality.

"Drip, drip!!"

Lin Bei suddenly heard the sound of dripping water and instinctively looked down.

A boy of about fifteen, his face pale and eyes wide with fear, was trembling so much that he wet himself. Pavilion Chief Li was on the ground, holding the boy's mouth tightly, afraid he would scream.

Lin Bei quickly understood the situation and felt a bit amused.

To these people, Lin Bei was a terrifying giant python. Given his size, swallowing a person would not be difficult. They had never seen such a fierce creature before, and their first instinct was not to provoke it, as any movement could cause the creature to lose control. Their reaction was correct, but it was useless against Lin Bei. Although his body was that of a python, his mind was still human. Eating people? Lin Bei had never considered it.

The boy, already scared to the point of wetting himself, fainted when he saw the snake's head lower and stare at him fiercely.

Pavilion Chief Li was brave enough not to faint, but he did not dare to move, even though the boy had fainted.

Lin Bei ignored them, lowered his head to the ground, and slowly uncoiled his body from the well. Since he was still unfamiliar with his snake body, his movements were slow, but he gradually became more accustomed to it. As he did, he was amazed by the strength of his new body.

In modern times, Lin Bei had watched many nature documentaries, including those about pythons. Generally, snakes over three meters long are considered pythons, which can easily strangle an adult. Pythons over five meters long have almost no natural predators and can even strangle crocodiles, making them terrifying creatures. His current body was over twelve meters long, and when he moved, he felt an overwhelming surge of strength. He felt he could even crush a steel pillar, a power he had never experienced before.

As he became more familiar with his body, Lin Bei's control over his snake form increased. He could 'see' living creatures hundreds of meters away. The term 'see' was a bit strange, but that's how he perceived it. It was likely due to the vibrations in the air that were transmitted to him, forming clear images in his mind. This ability was astonishing.

"Perhaps this is an animal's instinct, and it is indeed powerful," Lin Bei muttered to himself. This newfound strength somewhat alleviated his discomfort with being a snake.

Thus, with Lin Bei at the center, the situation within a few hundred meters became clear in his mind. It was a village surrounded by a three-meter-high earthen wall, likely for defense. The village had over three hundred residents, and they were now gathering from all directions, drawn by Lin Bei's appearance.
