Lin Bei returned to Longtan.
At this moment, Lin Bei's mood was not very pleasant. The shock from earlier had not yet subsided, and he seemed somewhat dazed. It wasn't until he felt something amiss around him that he snapped out of it.
"Is this? The pregnant jackal?"
Outside the fence, the pregnant female jackal was struggling to lie down beside a bush. Her belly was even larger than before, but she looked thinner, almost like a skeleton, with much of her fur fallen out. It seemed she hadn't eaten much recently. She was very agitated, frequently sniffing the air.
After some thought, Lin Bei understood what the female jackal was doing. She was sensing the scent of blood.
After leaving the jackal pack, jackals usually only eat the carcasses of other animals, as a lone jackal cannot hunt large prey. Their appetites are large, so jackals that leave the pack often live poorly, much like wolves, almost always in a state of hunger. This was especially true for a pregnant female jackal, whose mobility was severely limited, a fatal flaw. This female jackal probably couldn't even catch a wild chicken. The forest shows no sympathy for the weak, so who else but her would be hungry?
A few days ago, the female jackal had a good meal here, possibly the best she had had in a long time. So, the hungry female jackal subconsciously came back to the area, hoping to find more food. This was similar to the psychology of waiting for a rabbit to run into a tree stump. Due to her hunger, she even ignored Lin Bei's powerful aura.
Lin Bei actually had a strong aversion to jackals. In his mind, they were the embodiment of cunning and cruelty. However, for a pregnant and emaciated female jackal, he felt pity. As a father himself, he knew how difficult it was to raise the next generation.
When he was carrying Lin Rou, Gao Rou suffered greatly. Her pregnancy symptoms were severe, with little appetite, and whatever she managed to eat, she would vomit. She lost a lot of weight in just a few days. Her temper also became extremely irritable, affecting Lin Bei as well. When Lin Rou was born, Lin Bei thought the nightmare was over, but it was just the beginning.
When Lin Rou was one or two years old, her health was poor, and she cried a lot, making Lin Bei and his wife extremely tired. They would often be woken up by her crying after just falling asleep, and this would go on for hours. If she caught a cold or some other minor illness, it was even worse. Lin Bei almost developed insomnia from the stress. Fortunately, the grown-up Lin Rou was very lovable, and people often complimented her cuteness, filling Lin Bei with pride.
Thinking about these memories, Lin Bei looked at the female jackal with more sympathy. "Sister, you're lucky you met me. If you had met a big snake, it would have eaten you."
Shaking his head, Lin Bei went behind the Flying Dragon Wall, killed two fat wild chickens, and deliberately made them bloody. He then used his tail to grab them and threw them forcefully in the direction of the female jackal.
The falling wild chickens clearly startled the female jackal. She let out a low howl and instinctively tried to avoid them, but her movements were slow due to her condition. Then she smelled the blood.
Looking around cautiously, the female jackal was clearly puzzled, but the hunger in her belly quickly overcame her doubts. Hunger can make people lose their reason, let alone an animal. She soon pounced on the wild chicken and started eating voraciously.
The first wild chicken was quickly devoured by the female jackal. Lin Bei knew one was not enough, so he had caught two. He then threw the second one over. Seeing the female jackal's eating speed slow down, Lin Bei stopped paying attention to her. He had done what he could.
Back in the wooden house, Lin Bei walked around and noticed its shortcomings. He wondered why he hadn't seen them earlier.
The wooden house was indeed large, but it had no bed. The floor was still just the ground, with only the weeds cleared and some stones removed, making it uneven and bumpy. At the very least, there should be some wooden planks. Sleeping on the ground for too long could lead to rheumatism.
"Next time, I'll have them lay wooden planks and a bed. The bed should have thick, soft grass on top for warmth," Lin Bei nodded, approving of his decision.
Seeing the goji berries outside the window, Lin Bei's eyes lit up. This was a good thing, and they were ripe. He quickly went to the taro field, got a taro leaf, laid it down, and used a stick to knock the goji berries off.
The hunters had been very diligent, and this goji bush had many fruits. After knocking them off, he collected about half a pound. He then moved the goji berries to the Azure Dragon Stone, looked at the sun, and thought they would dry quickly. He could use them to make tea or add them to bone soup as a seasoning.
After finishing this, Lin Bei looked at the female jackal again. The second wild chicken was almost completely eaten, with only some feathers left. The female jackal looked quite scary, emaciated but with a belly like a large balloon. Lin Bei was worried that if she bumped into something while walking, her belly might burst.
The female jackal wobbled to her feet and licked her lips, looking quite satisfied. Then, the fur on her back suddenly stood up, and she looked in Lin Bei's direction. Clearly, now that her hunger was satisfied, she finally sensed Lin Bei's presence.
"Damn, you only notice me now? Now you're scared? Get lost, I won't hold it against you." Knowing that animals lack intelligence, Lin Bei still felt annoyed. To treat a savior like this was too despicable.
The female jackal, unaware that Lin Bei's impression of her had worsened, would have been killed by him if not for the sake of her unborn children. The fur on her back remained erect, but she started to back away, sensing Lin Bei's overwhelming presence and choosing the smartest course of action.
"Next time, don't let me see you again." Lin Bei watched the female jackal retreat from his sight and said this with a fierce tone.
However, just as he finished speaking, Lin Bei saw a clouded leopard leap from a tree, chasing after the retreating female jackal. Lin Bei's heart was suddenly conflicted.
"Should I let it die? Let it die? Or let it die?"
Lin Bei's body moved out, feeling frustrated.
