Occupation (2)

‘Commander?’

The word, unlike the other white text, floated in blue. Perhaps because it was a rare grade, it stood out even more. The first step was to read the descriptions of all occupations.

[Warrior - Common Grade]

- A warrior who can fight at the front is an essential part of a party. While not the most efficient, they can easily adapt to any weapon, whether it's a sword and shield, spear, or axe. Later, they can advance to other melee occupations such as a Barbarian, Knight, Paladin, Cavalier, or Mercenary. Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity each increase by 1.

[Archer - Common Grade]

- An archer capable of ranged attacks. They acquire basic knowledge of bows and arrows. Later, they can advance to melee occupations like Thief or Assassin, or even to higher-tier archer occupations like Elemental Archer or Magic Archer. Dexterity increases by 3.

[Mage - Common Grade]

- A ranged occupation that can use magic. They acquire basic knowledge of magic. Later, they can advance to occupations like Black Mage, Alchemist, or Summoner. Magic increases by 3.

None of them are bad.

The Warrior boosts three stats that are hard for me to increase, and the Archer provides basic knowledge of bows and arrows, which is a great fit for someone who wants to stay at a distance.

The Mage, which boosts a completely unrelated stat, Magic, was quite meaningful to me.

However, the most intriguing was the rare occupation, Commander.

[Commander - Common Grade]

- An occupation with almost no combat ability. Instead of being on the front lines, they stand a step back, assess the situation, and issue orders. Their field of vision is slightly wider. It is unknown what occupations they can advance to later. Intelligence increases by +1.

Before reading the description, I was already leaning towards the Commander.

But after reading all the descriptions, my head really started to hurt.

The Commander's abilities themselves are not bad.

‘What does it mean to have a wider field of vision?’

And the Intelligence boost is only +1.

Compared to the other two occupations, which boost stats by +3, this is a significant disadvantage.

That's not all.

‘Later...’

The lack of information about what to do later is unsettling.

By the way, Kim Hyun-sung's occupation is also a common one, a Swordsman.

He could have obtained a rare occupation or even a hero occupation.

However, given that he has the Expert in Swordsmanship trait, he seems to be avoiding the Swordsman for now. He is likely prioritizing the path he already knows over immediate efficiency.

While I was pondering, I saw Kim Hyun-sung approaching.

"Seems like you've chosen an occupation."

"Yes."

If I knew what occupation would be best for growth, it would be easier to choose, but the first choice determines everything, so it's bound to be a tough decision. I was thinking about getting some subtle advice when Park Deok-gu spoke up.

"Brother, this..."

"Why?"

"I'm a bit conflicted. The common grades are Warrior and Priest, and the rare grade is Shield Soldier. I can't decide which is better."

"Priest?"

"It seems that later, they can advance to occupations like a Paladin... The Warrior can advance to a Barbarian... But isn't the rare grade better?"

Considering Park Deok-gu's potential, which is focused on Constitution and Durability, the Shield Soldier is not a bad choice.

"Shield Soldier..."

"It's written that it's an occupation focused on defense. It says there are advantages when holding a shield, but the problem is that there's not much information about what occupations they can advance to later. Oh, and Strength decreases by -2, but Durability and Constitution each increase by 3."

"It doesn't seem bad."

It was Kim Hyun-sung who spoke up for me, offering help without being asked.

"Your Durability seems high... Even if Strength decreases, the increase in Durability is quite impressive. Even if Strength decreases, you'll have 4 spare stat points."

‘I see.’

If this were an online game, a tank, a warrior who fights at the front, is essential.

From his reaction, it seems the system here is not much different.

It seems that both priests and tanks are highly valued.

"Hmm... So that's the case."

"Have the traits not opened yet?"

"Traits haven't opened yet."

"In my case, I chose the Swordsman as a common occupation and have a trait that boosts attack power. I wanted to choose a Warrior that boosts Strength, but I thought choosing a Swordsman that boosts Dexterity was a better option. Now that the trait has opened, I think my choice was a good one."

"Ah."

Subtly expressing his opinion.

It's not just the occupation that matters. The balance of stats, the existence of traits, and the abilities of those traits.

When these three factors align, the efficiency is the best.

Although he didn't strongly assert it, Kim Hyun-sung seemed to want Park Deok-gu to choose the rare occupation, Shield Soldier.

"What do you think, Brother?"

"I think similarly. It's unknown if you'll get a trait that boosts attack power later, but Hyun-sung can make up for the lack of attack power. Considering the immediate benefits, boosting stats by 4 is definitely not bad... But the choice is yours."

"Hmm..."

"Priest..."

"Worst."

The Priest is the worst.

Even if they can advance to occupations like Paladin, it doesn't feel right to think about the Priest.

Park Deok-gu's Magic talent isn't that high.

After a short while, Park Deok-gu's body briefly glowed blue.

He successfully advanced to a new occupation.

"Did you choose?"

"Indeed, the Shield Soldier seems the most appropriate."

"Really?"

"Brother, you'll be able to protect me better, and others can handle the attack. If a Mage appears later, they can deal damage. Being at the front is a bit scary, but I think I can do it."

"Good choice."

Kim Hyun-sung nodded.

"May I ask what you chose, Gi-yeong?"

After a brief pause, I spoke.

"I haven't chosen yet. The common grades are Warrior, Archer, and Mage. The rare grade is Commander."

"Commander..."

I saw Park Deok-gu hesitate.

‘Is it a trap card?’

Naturally, the Commander card seemed like a trap.

"Hmm... I see."

"Brother, Commander! It seems to fit you perfectly!"

"Really?"

"Even if you didn't say it, you're totally a Commander type. Just imagining you waving your hand from the back is... Brother, if you command, we will definitely win."

Park Deok-gu seemed overly excited by the idea of me being a Commander, but I don't think I'm a Commander type.

The reason is

‘I know nothing about military strategy.’

I've never read a military strategy book.

I'm not particularly good at games like Go or Chess, and my intelligence isn't exceptionally high.

My experience in commanding others is limited to being a guild leader in an online game whose name I can't even remember.

In fact, my character is closer to a con artist. I even thought about trying a Thief occupation.

"Give the orders, Brother!"

‘This guy...’

He's cute.

He already seems to think I'll choose the Commander occupation.

"The description says the field of vision widens and Intelligence increases by +1. You've probably seen the other occupations before."

"The benefits are a bit limited. Usually, other occupations boost stats by about 3 points..."

It felt like he was trying to dissuade me. The rare-grade Commander seems to be a trap.

"Brother, you're a Commander! Commander!"

I decided to think more carefully, ignoring the excited guy.

"It looks good because it's a rare grade, but it's concerning that we can't see what occupations are available later. It's possible that all the later occupations are common grades. The first occupation choice is very important, so..."

"Brother, you're a Commander! Commander! Command me!"

"..."

"Perhaps the Archer isn't bad, Gi-yeong. Being able to use a bow has its merits... Providing support from a distance can be very helpful. Later, you can become a Thief..."

"Brother, you're a Commander! Commander! Follow me!"

"First, boosting stats will be..."

"Brother's strength is the Commander! Definitely Commander!"

"Archer..."

"Commander!"

"Archer..."

"Commander!"

"Archer..."

"Commander!"

"Archer, after all!"

"Commander!"

"Then, Archer..."

"Commander!!!"

With both sides pushing, I'm even more confused.

‘Damn...’

It feels like the other guys will come running over.

Kim Hyun-sung, who seems to know a bit about the Commander, is trying to recommend the Archer to help me grow, but he doesn't know that my potential is the worst.

‘I just want to be an Archer.’

But choosing the Commander also has its problems. The Mage keeps catching my eye. My Magic is poor, but I can use my relatively high Intelligence.

‘What should I do?’

The important thing is to maximize my strengths. I've already concluded that my trait, Eye of the Mind, offers no hope.

"Ah..."

In the end, I have to choose the occupation that will be most efficient.

Closing my eyes and making a decision, I felt a flash of light as my body changed slightly.

"Phew..."

I successfully advanced to a new occupation.

Kim Hyun-sung and Park Deok-gu spoke simultaneously.

"Commander? Archer?"
