In the classroom, there is the sound of a female teacher tapping chalk on the blackboard, students running their pens through their notebooks, and textbook pages being turned.

Right now, an English class is being held. It’s a class that should be full of tension.

But–

“Shinjou-kun, Shinjou-kun.”

— Only I can hear the voice of a girl who doesn’t seem to be nervous. It’s the voice of Satori, the girl sitting diagonally in front of me.

“Shinjou-kun, Shinjou-kun…”

If I let it go, Satori will keep calling my name. I had no choice but to respond.

However, I don’t reply with my voice.

“What is it, Satori?”

I reply in my head.

Satori and I are both psychics, so-called “telepaths”, who can exchange words just by thinking about them in our heads.

But we’re in the middle of a class, so if possible, I’d like you to be quiet.

“Shinjou-kun.”

Despite my wish, Satori speaks to me again today.

“You’re bored, aren’t you?”

“I’m not bored. We’re in class.”

“Yes, that’s true. But isn’t it kind of lonely that everyone has gone silent?”

“Well, that’s cause we’re in class”

“Why don’t we do a little psychological test?

Satori doesn’t listen to people. No, she doesn’t listen to people’s telepathy.

“A psychological test?

“Yeah. It was on TV yesterday. If you do this psychological test, you can find out what the person is thinking in their head.”

“Isn’t that something that …… we’ve already done?”

Or rather, what we’re doing now.

“If you put it that way, I guess you’re right.”

“Right. So we’re done talking about this.”

From the back of her head, it looks like Satori is sitting quietly at her desk, copying the English text on the blackboard in a serious manner.

“Eh. I want to expose Shinjou-kun’s psychology.”

But in truth, she was doing her best to skip class.

“Shinjou-kun. If I miss this chance, I don’t know when I can do the psychological test next, you know?”

“You can do it anytime you want.”

“Human beings don’t know when they will become incapable of doing psychological tests.”

“What kind of person can’t do a psychological test?”

“In any case, since it’s you, Shinjou-kun, you don’t usually try to maintain a body that can do psychological tests at any time, do you?”

“You don’t have to, you know.”

Does Satori try to do that?

“‘Yes, then let’s move on.”

As I did so, I heard the teacher’s voice, not telepathically, but in reality. Of course, it was not directly in my head, but in my ears.

“Nexto pege–“

The English teacher’s pronunciation was not good enough for an English teacher.

…….

I’m not sure how long it’ll take to get to the next page.

As long as I’m talking to Satori telepathically, I can’t concentrate on my classes.

I pretend to be looking at my textbook so I don’t get angry, but my mind is on my conversation with Satori, so I can’t focus on what the teacher is saying at all.

“Satori. Midterm exams are coming up soon. I want to take my classes properly.”

“Hey, Shinjou-kun? Which is more important, the psych test or the midterm? Which is more important?”

“The midterm.”

“So, which is more important, your job or your girlfriend?”

“I don’t have either of those right now.”

“As you were walking in the forest, a small animal peeked out from the bushes. Which animal is it, a squirrel or a rabbit?”

“Don’t start a psychological test so quickly.”

“The correct answer was a squirrel.”

“There’s no right answer. It’s a psychological test.”

“……Shinjou-kun……”

Satori lowered the tone of her voice, or rather her reminder, a bit.

“…… I’m speaking directly to your brain now: ……”

“You’ve been doing that all along.”

What is it now.

“Today, I’m in the mood to really test someone’s psychology this morning.”

What kind of mood is that?

“I’m so overwhelmed with the desire to test someone’s psychology that I feel like I’m about to fall asleep.”

“Go to sleep, then.”

Sleep as well as you can.

“I’ll just focus on my classes, you know.”

“Mmm, I can’t help it. For the sake of selfish Shinjou-kun, shall I break the rules?”

“Who’s selfish?

“I’ve thought of about ten psychological tests, but I won’t say all of them.”

You’ve thought of them? You mean they’re original? And ten of them.”

“That’s …… right, especially this time after listening to the opinion of the busy Shinjou-kun. Let’s do it with 10 of them.”

I heard wrong. No, I think I misunderstood the telepathy.

“The number hasn’t decreased, though.”

“Hey, you noticed, kid.”

“Kid?”

“Then we’ll have a bloody great service, and you can have one.”

Satori was not going to let me out of this telepathic chatter if I didn’t keep her company for a little while. I reluctantly decided to break it off.

“Well, just one then.”

“Wow.”

“It’s not bloody, it’s bleeding”

“Yay.”

Why is she rejoicing.

“Well, let’s get started.”

Satori began to remind me in a narrative tone.

“You are now walking down a street lined with poplars.” (TL/N: Poplar is I think the japanese equivalent of 7/11, basically a popular chain)

“Oh.”

“And you’ve stopped at one of those stores.”

“…… Is that the poplar over there?”

“It’s the poplar over there.”

Which way.

“You know, there’s no such thing as a street lined with Poplars where there are several of the same convenience stores.”

“Isn’t that Hiroshima?”

“I don’t think there are that many in Hiroshima either.”

I mean, how did you know where it originated?

“Well, well. When you enter a convenience store, what corner do you go to first?”

Did it have to be Poplar?

“Well, what corner is it?”

“Umm…ATM, I guess.”

“Uh.”

“Uh, I’m not sure if you said that.”

“Then that ATM is …….”

Satori said.

“What does it stand for?”

Is this a psychological test?

“I don’t know what it stands for.”

“The correct answer was Automated Teller Machine.”

Nice pronunciation for nothing. Telepathic, though.

“No, so there’s no such thing as a correct answer in a psychological test.”

“I’m surprised that you were planning to head to a place where you don’t even know what the word means.”

“That’s fine. I just want to withdraw some money.”

“Hmm. I see. So the first place you’re headed is the ATM?”

Satori sent a satisfied look of reminder.

“Thank you for telling me, Shinjou-kun.”

“Sure.”

With that, Satori’s telepathy ceased.

…….

………….

……………….

……………… Wait, that’s the end?

“Um, Satori-san?”

I sent a reminder and Satori replied back.

“Oh, don’t worry, I won’t interrupt you anymore. I’m concentrating on class.”

“No, Satori.”

“After an argument, Ken hit Mary in the temple with a marble ashtray.”

“There’s no English sentence like that in the textbook.

“Hey, Shinjo-kun. You’re interrupting class.

“What?

Whose brain is saying this again?

“Didn’t we agree that there would only be one psychological test?”

Why am I the one being chastised?

“No, Satori. You can’t do a psychological test and not tell me the results.”

“Yeah, …….”

Satori sent me a look as if it was a surprise.

“Do you want to know the results?”

“Yes, I want to know.”

“I don’t know, Shinjou-kun. You didn’t seem too keen on the psychological test, and I thought you wouldn’t need the results.”

“I do! It’s a psychological test until you hear the results and say ‘huh’ or ‘wow, it’s true’!”

Rather, that’s the main part, isn’t it?

“Hmm. I was going to take the results to my grave, but…”

“Did you get such a shocking result?”

“I can’t help it. I’ll tell you.”

“Please tell me.”

Why does it look like I’m the one asking for help?

“The first place you go when you enter a convenience store is ……. This psychological test is. It will tell you what you are looking for most in your ideal marriage partner.”

It was a rather decent test.

“So?”

As I was waiting for Satori’s answer, I suddenly heard a voice.

“‘Misutaa Shinjou-kun.’

The teacher called my name.

“Please come forward and write the word that goes in this blank.”

Damn, there was an unexpected interruption and it had to be now…….

No, that’s not it.

It’s Satori who’s in the way. I was about to be inspired.

“Raito now.”

“Yes, …….”

I got up from my seat and walked over to the blackboard. The blackboard had English text written on it, with spaces in the middle and parentheses.

Yes.

I hadn’t been listening to the class, so I had no idea what was going on.

I reluctantly decided to take emergency measures.

“Satori-san, …….”

“How can I help you?”

“Please, tell me.”

Satori is good at English for some reason. So much so that she has a combination of good pronunciation that she wasted no time in showing off just in case earlier.

It was Satori’s fault that I was in a tight spot. It would be nice to have some help here. Finally, for the first time today, telepathy would come in handy.

“Please tell me the answer.”

“Very well.”

I don’t know why she’s being so pompous, but I’ll be patient here.

“Thank you!”

“May I, Shinjou-kun?”

“Yes.”

Satori gave me the answer I’d been wanting.

“You chose ATM, so that means what you’re looking for is a ‘stable income’.” (T/N: In a marriage partner as per the test earlier)

My next recess was ruined by the teacher’s sermon.
