Chapter 38

The day after installing the door, I started making the bed as planned. I don't think I can make a bed that could be sold in just six days, but since it's for my own use, I don't need to make it too elaborate.
I hesitated about the guest room, but since guests won't be staying for long, I decided to make it a bit rough and ask them to bear with it. For nobles, this might be a matter of face, but we are just blacksmiths. Even if some noble from the capital comes, the condition for me to make a "custom order" is that they come here alone, so it's not something that happens often. If they are such a hero, they will probably forgive a bit of roughness.
"So, from today, we'll start with the bed. I'll cut the tenons, so let me know when the wood is ready."
"Understood."
"Alright."
Today, Rike and Sermia will make one bed, and I'll make another. The workshop is outside. This area is open like a square, and the sun shines through, making it feel good. Today, I want to cut the wood to the right dimensions and get to the stage just before assembly. Tomorrow, we'll assemble and move it in, and then make and rearrange the guest room bed, which is the plan for the next six days or so.
The dimensions are based on the bed in my room, which is a bit larger, but it will fit in the new room with plenty of space for other items. I cut some pieces of wood to the size of the bed to use as a measuring tool and cut the wood based on that. The height is also done similarly. I cut the wood piece by piece. I have plenty of wood left from drying logs that were used as transport platforms when we caught deer and the like.
"Master, can you do this part?"
"Sure."
While occasionally being asked to cut tenons, I made the parts. Since I need to make several, it took quite a bit of time. In the end, I spent the whole day making a set of parts.
The next day, it's time to assemble and move in. I started assembling the parts I had made. Considering that even in the previous world, assembling furniture from parts took a lot of time, I expect it to take quite a while. Using a mallet isn't that difficult, but accurately assembling it is harder than it looks. In the end, it took until the afternoon to finish the assembly.
We moved the completed bed into the newly built room.
"Just having the bed makes it feel like a room where people live."
"Yeah. I didn't have a bed before, but since I've been here, having a bed has become normal, and it really does make the room feel like a room."
"Dwarves have rooms, but they often sleep in a communal area, so having individual rooms is a bit nerve-wracking."
"Huh? Didn't Rike do room expansions?"
"I did, but basically, one family per room, so we only had shelves, not beds. Even among family members, different genders didn't share the same room."
"I see."
Maybe getting used to having one bed per person is the odd one out. I don't know how people in the city (both inside and outside the walls) feel about it.
"Well, this makes our home feel more like home."
"Yeah."
"Indeed."
To celebrate, we had wine with dinner that day.
The next day.
"Since it's for guests today, let's make it a bit more elaborate."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, let's see..."
We didn't make a canopy for our own beds, but we will for the guest bed. I considered adding decorative carvings, but decided against it as it might be too ornate. I told Sermia and Rike about this.
"I see."
"Understood."
We cut the materials for the canopy today. I thought we might be able to assemble it by the end of the day, but with the canopy, it took longer than expected.
"Let's call it a day and finish the rest tomorrow."
"Sure."
"Okay."
With the remaining time, I went to the workshop and made some nails. The nails are similar to square Japanese nails. I made a decent number and ensured I had enough in stock, so I finished all the work for the day.
The next day, before assembling the bed, we rearranged the furniture. We moved the furniture from Rike and Sermia's room, except for the shelves, to the living room, and moved a desk, chair, and shelf from the study to the bedroom. We then moved the furniture from the bedroom to the empty space, completing the rearrangement. This took quite a bit of time, and I regret not doing it the day before, but it's too late now. We hurried to assemble the bed. Although it was a bit hectic, it went smoother than expected because we had done it before. Still, it was almost dark by the time we finished. We had to hurry to move it in.
"Be careful with that."
"Sure."
Rike and I moved the guest bed into the study. Although it's for guests, I will be using it for a while. By the time we finished moving it in, it was already dark.
"It took a bit longer than expected."
When I said this in reflection,
"Well, it can't be helped. Even if it's a task you're used to, it's normal for it to take this long."
Sermia comforted me. Rike also said,
"Well, this kind of work won't happen often in the future, so it's fine even if it takes this long."
Thus, after all the hustle and bustle, the bed-making was completed, and our home felt even more like home.
