– title refers to 校草, or school grass, which is used to describe the most handsome boy in a school |opposite of 校花, or school flower, which is the school (female) beauty
– the bei (贝) of Shang Beibei (商贝贝) means shell, which is why the author calls her ‘oyster’
The sun was like a blazing inferno, accompanied by the cacophonous din of cicadas.
Shang Beibei was so hot that her entire face was flushed red; beads of sweat trailed down her bangs and wet her cheeks. She was holding a large stack of worksheets, making her way from the photocopy room to the school building.
This was the last period of school before summer vacation. Getting used to the heat was one thing, but being sent out to retrieve the two sets of new worksheets was an entirely different matter altogether.
The ink hadn’t dried yet, so she couldn’t hug it in her arms in fear that it would muddy her uniform. From time to time she would change the hand holding the papers, leaving lines of red scars on her soft and white palms.
Her cell phone was continuously vibrating in the pocket of her school uniform, but she didn’t have any empty hands to check it with. Earlier, when she walked under the shade, it had been relatively cooler; now, the places where the sun directly hit her skin felt terribly hot.
She was like an oyster stranded on the beach. If she continued like this, she would be made into oyster jerky.
Suddenly, a male voice rang in her ear. “Let me help you.”
As he spoke, he grabbed the worksheets from her hand. There was already a stack of sheets in his hand, but he combined them with ease into one pile that he held effortlessly with one hand. With large strides, he walked away.
Shang Beibei was so hot she felt like she would faint. It took a while for her to recognize the boy — it was Xiao Yang from Class 1. Upon this realization, her already red face became even more ruddy, resembling a crystalline apple.
“It’s fine, it’s fine, I can hold it.” Her voice was quiet; if the other girls knew that Xiao Yang had helped her carry the worksheets, she would be fried into a crisp.
Xiao Yang looked at her. She was short, barely reaching his elbow. Her arms and legs looked extremely thin. When he had gone to the copy room, he had seen her sluggishly walking.
After he had retrieved the worksheets, she was still walking. In the end, he straightforwardly took the papers from her. They were returning to the same place, anyway.
“Don’t worry about it.”
“It’s fine, it’s fine, I can handle it,” Shang Beibei insisted in a panic. If anyone saw her like this, she didn’t know if she would survive the aftermath.
Xiao Yang frowned, but didn’t say anything as he strode past her.
Shang Beibei jogged to keep up with him. She glanced at the side of his face. They were wearing the same uniform, but on him it seemed pure, intelligent and sleek. Though he seemed to be doing a good deed, his expression like he was collecting a debt.
Shang Beibei thought about the post she had read on the campus forum. It was said that Xiao Yang had a bad temper. There had been girls who had confessed to him last semester, only for him to ignore them on the spot and cause those girls to cry for a long time.
But he was clearly a good person.
Xiao Yang walked to the head of the stairs and handed the worksheets to Shang Beibei. Shang Beibei reached into her uniform pocket for a long time. However, after finding nothing, she could only clench her teeth and give a shallow bow to Xiao Yang: “Thank you.”
…
“You’re welcome.”
Xiao Yang went up a few stairs, then turned around to take a look. That girl was still slowly walking. He couldn’t help the smile that formed on his face as he returned to the classroom.
When Shang Beibei passed the door to class one, she couldn’t help but straighten her back and stare resolutely forwards. When she walked to class two, she finally released a breath and relaxed her shoulders. She was exhausted.
Upon entering the door to class seven, all of her classmates eyes focused onto the roll of worksheets. Seeing how thick the papers were, there was a collective sigh. Any dreams of having one last week of fun were instantly crushed.
Shang Beibei put the worksheets onto the podium and walked to her desk. She was still immersed in the dreamlike scene when Xiao Yang had helped her hold her sheets. This brief summer interlude was the closest she had ever gotten to a handsome man in the past seventeen years.
The cicadas and the scorch of the sun took on a pink tint; a gust of cool wind passed by her ears… upon turning around, she realized that it had just been Song Yihan fanning her.
“So it was you who went to get the worksheets.” Earlier, when the whole class had been doing cleaning duties, Song Yihan had been displaying her mastery of the cleaning rag. In a moment, Shang Beibei had disappeared.
“Was it that Yuan Lina who had you get them?” Song Yihan said, casting an eye on Yuan Lina. “Such a hot day, and she wasn’t willing to get it herself. Why are you taking it so well?”
As she fanned her, she also sulked that Shang Beibei was too much of a pushover.
Shang Beibei secretly smiled. If it hadn’t been for her agreeing to retrieve the worksheets, how would she have met Xiao Yang?
“It’s over. She’s gone stupid from the heat,” Qi Ye said, clutching her stomach. On such a hot day, she was dressed in full time-of-the-month garb. Her entire body was collapsed onto the table; only her mouth continued to talk incessantly.
Shang Beibei smiled. She didn’t intend to tell anyone about that brief summer interlude, including her two best friends. She placed the worksheets that were now being passed out into her schoolbag with a secretive smile.
The three each had their own strengths. Song Yihan looked at the worksheet. “Then, how about we arrange a date to do it.”
As she spoke, she made eye contact and winked. Shang Beibei was responsible for language and literature, Qi Ye math, and Song Yihan English. The other subjects were completed with the combined efforts of all of them.
They ultimately decided that they would first study on their own, then meet at Shang Beibei’s home in two days to finish the worksheet.
Shang Beibei had recently moved. Her new house was in a closer district to the school, making it easier for her to continue her junior and senior year studies.
She left the school with her schoolbag and an umbrella. It was extremely sunny, but she could not walk very fast, so she pressed an ice-cold Coca Cola against her forehead to cool down her burnt body. Upon reaching the elevator of the apartment, she then tried to pry open the cap of the Cola.
The doors to the elevator slowly closed.
“Wait!”
Shang Beibei pressed the elevator door on reflex. Upon raising her head, she realized that she was looking at Xiao Yang.
Her mouth opened slightly. Xiao Yang also recognized her, and his gaze seemed to contain great, billowing tides. One glance was enough for Shang Beibei to immediately look down, retreating back into her oyster shell.
Xiao Yang reached to press the elevator button. However, the number was already lit up. They unexpectedly lived on the same floor.
Shang Beibei didn’t know that Xiao Yang lived here. Her mother had said that this neighborhood had a good fengshui, and that this particular building was in a particularly good area.
The fengshui master said that the spiritual energy in this area was overflowing. Here, she would certainly be able to become the top scorer in the gaokao!
Shang Beibei secretly glanced at Xiao Yang. Perhaps her mother’s hopes were about to be dashed. Here, the top gaokao scorer was definitely Xiao Yang.
When they posted the top 100 exam scorers, his name was always the first. However, Shang Beibei had never even squeezed into the top 100 in her life.
in Chinese high schools, the students with the highest exam scores are posted onto a school display board
This was the second time Xiao Yang encountered this girl. He was slightly afraid of girls that were too enthusiastic and chattered on and on, but Shang Beibei was completely silent. He snuck a glance and found that she was focusing whole-heartedly on prying open the lid of her Cola.
However, the lid was too tight. No matter how much she wanted to drink some ice cold Cola, she was unable to open it.
From the first floor to the twelfth floor, the Cola had still not been opened. Her small face was flushed as she continued to work at the cap.
Xiao Yang waited for her to ask him for help. Girls seemed to love asking him to do such things, as if the drinks he opened tasted sweeter.
He waited in expectation.
But she didn’t seem to have any intention of asking him. She continued to stubbornly wrest with the lid.
Shang Beibei swore that she wasn’t a weak, powerless woman. However, today the cap really wouldn’t budge even the slightest. The longer she was unable to drink, the thirstier she became.
Xiao Yang suppressed his suddenly quickening heartbeat to raise an eyebrow. He reached over and plucked the bottle from Shang Beibei’s hands. Without any effort at all, the cap popped off with a quiet “tss“. Just as easily, he stuffed it back into her grasp.
The entire sequence was extremely smooth. The entire time, his eyes remained on the elevator door.
The sound of soda frothing resonated in Shang Beibei’s ears. Her face turned red. The bubbles in her heart seemed to fizz along with her soda.
The elevator door opened with a loud “ding!”. Xiao Yang walked out first.
Soda in hand, Shang Beibei kept her gaze front-facing until she finally returned home. It wasn’t until she heard the thud of the door closing that she finally took two sips of the Cola.
The Cola that Xiao Yang had opened was extremely sweet.
She burped loudly, then thought that the post in the campus forum must have been fake.
Xiao Yang really was a good person.
So I decided to translate a short series before I leave for college ;;;. This is a really cute novel, and I’ve been watching too much A Love So Beautiful so I was in the mood for campus romances. I’m sorry Corpse Ruler, I’m not a faithful translator ;-;
Given my track record, don’t expect any fast releases…
