Chapter 38 of 45

Chapter 38

4 min read957 words

It has been three months since the true identity of Genki was revealed. It was early December. As expected, the heat had long since disappeared, and it was the time of year to wear long sleeves and blazers.

Nothing particularly significant had happened since then. I had been diligent in my studies and hadn't skipped any training sessions on weekdays. On weekends, I went on missions with Roll or followed her when she was shadowed... It was a rather tough daily routine, but I was getting used to it.

However, after continuing this lifestyle for three months—no, five months—my body had started to show changes. My dress shirts had become much tighter compared to last year. It was inevitable since I had gained muscle. There was no way to hide this.

I had been passing it off to everyone at school, including Genki, as being obsessed with weight training, but I had to figure out what to do about the increasing number of injuries on my body. I needed to think about that as well.

"The school tournament is approaching."

"Right."

Roll's words brought me back to the current topic of discussion—the school tournament.

The school tournament is an annual event held in late December. The tournament is organized by grade, and participation is not mandatory. Therefore, those without abilities or those who opt out have holidays during the tournament period. Additionally, powerful ability users who might injure their opponents are not eligible to participate. Participation eligibility is determined by the ability tests held in December.

While participation is not mandatory, the event is practically semi-mandatory due to its impact on job prospects. Important figures from the Self-Defense Forces and company presidents attend, so everyone works hard for their future careers.

Last year, I remember using the holiday during the school tournament to go out and play with Genki and the others.

"I think we should skip this year's school tournament. What do you think, Shizune?"

"I'll leave it to Roll. Isn't that the only option? I'm still supposed to be an abilityless person, after all."

"You're right..."

Come to think of it, the revelation of Genki's true identity had significantly disrupted our plans. The gradual development of my abilities had been delayed, as Roll's strategy was to proceed cautiously with a Self-Defense Forces lieutenant general in the same class.

"I think there's no need to rush since we still have next year. However, I do think it's time to start moving."

"Still, we have less than a year left. Genki is quite cautious within the school, and it's a bit scary..."

"Speaking of which, the name 'Roll' is also problematic, isn't it?"

"How many times have we had this conversation?"

"I don't know."

"I'm not that famous, and we haven't been exposed yet, so it's fine. I've only been on solo missions, so my name hasn't been leaked."

I don't know about the name, but Lieutenant General Shizune knew it. It's unusual for Roll to be so optimistic or careless... But since we haven't been exposed yet, it's fine. If it comes to the worst, Roll can just drop out of school and run away.

During missions, I often call her Roll, which is a problem. We've discussed trying to avoid calling each other by name, but I think it would be good to come up with other ways to address each other.

"Even if we're suspected, it's fine as long as there's no evidence, right?"

"Was that a pretty serious mistake?"

"It was due to various circumstances that I couldn't create a fake name. I never expected there to be a Self-Defense Forces member in the class."

"I see."

"Anyway, your abilities have increased quite a bit, haven't they?"

Roll deftly changed the subject.

"Yeah, that's true."

I nodded in agreement. Over the past three months, I had been taken to various places by different people, and my skills had improved significantly. Of course, I'm still a beginner, but I've grown enough to feel a bit confident. Naturally, the precision of my abilities has also improved, and I've been following the improvement program designed by Sigh.

"We should decide on a cover story for your abilities. So, write down everything you can do on this paper by tomorrow. Be as detailed as possible."

Roll handed me a blank sheet of paper and a pen, which I accepted.

"Write down everything you can do. Use bullet points."

"Got it."

"Since it's late, let's call it a day."

Roll stood up and said. Checking the time, it was already past 9 PM.

"Understood, good night."

"Good night."

After hearing Roll's response, I left the room and headed home.

When I got home, I immediately started working on the homework Roll had given me. I wrote down everything I could do, and it looked something like this:

- Can accurately hear sounds within a maximum radius of 1 km, including sounds that humans cannot normally hear.

- Can perceive space through sound reflections, similar to sonar.

- Can create sounds, including changing one's voice. Can generate sounds of varying intensity, like "sound strikes," with limits. Can use any sound as a source.

- Can block sounds.

- Can send sounds to people at a distance.

- Can use the above two abilities to facilitate conversations between people at a distance.

- Can hear heartbeats, breathing, and muscle movements, allowing for some prediction of an opponent's movements.

- Can cause objects to vibrate with sound.

- Can use ultrasonic waves to annoy Roll (in cat form).

There might be more things I can do, but this is about it for now. Some techniques are still incomplete.

I'll show this to Roll tomorrow.

With that thought, I went to bed.
