Shibuya Sota has a dream
December 24 – My beloved girlfriend died.
On a Christmas Eve night.
She was ran over by a car driven by a drunk while on her way to our meet-up spot.
And by the time I had rushed over to the hospital, she had already left this world.
After that I also attended her wake and funeral but, honestly, I don’t really remember much.
It felt as if all of this was a big nightmare, and I spent my days not being able to think of anything.
Though I received mails and lines from my friends in class, I couldn’t even bear to look at my smartphone.
The school just happened to have entered winter vacation, thus I had shut myself in my room drinking only water everyday.
My parents and sister being worried about me came to check up on me at least once a day and brought me some food, but I couldn’t really manage to eat much of it.
It was a life of vacant nothingness, staring at my girlfriend’s pictures and sleeping.
I didn’t have the will to live. Nothing really mattered to me anymore.
Around a week after she died, I started having a dream.
The one who appeared in the dream, she was my dead girlfriend – Shinonome Yukina.
Big eyes hiding under her long brown hair.
The usual school uniform.
She’s dressed the same as the two-shot photos I have been looking at since Yukina died.
With emotions of nostalgia and love bubbling up inside me, I cried even though I was inside a dream.
Suddenly, I was hit by Yukina. Wiping away my tears I looked at her; she looked mad at me.
Her angry face is cute as well. Opening her mouth up and down, she seemed to be saying something.
“….?”
Yukina is trying to say something, but her voice is not audible.
Apparently it was a type of dream where we cant talk.
–Sou-chan!
Even though her voice couldn’t be heard, I managed to make out that she was calling my name through the movement of her lips.
My name is Shibuya Sota.
She used to call me by the nickname “Sou-chan”.
–You have to eat properly!
Seems like she’s angry at me for not eating well for the past few days.
I couldn’t help but let out a laugh.
This dream is happening inside my head, that is, Yukina saying all this is just my imagination.
Seems like somewhere deep inside my brain, I must be thinking that I need to eat something.
I have been wondering if I should just die of starvation by not eating anything, but looks like my heart doesn’t feel the same way.
The morning after the dream, for the first time in a few days, I had a proper meal.
My parents and sister had been overjoyed.
From then on, I slowly started regain and return to my normal life.

Around when winter vacation ended, and the third semester started, I was on my way to school. Up to just three weeks ago, I used to head there together with Yukina.
Today, I was walking alone slowly.
When Yukina had just died, I had wondered if I would be able to head to the classroom without her.
However now that it’s been three weeks since Yukina died. Humans seem to be creatures who get used to grief with time.
And, Yukina also appears in my dreams everyday.
–Sou-chan! Your hair has grown too long!
–Sou-chan! Make sure to eat breakfast everyday!
–Sou-chan! You can’t forget to iron your uniform!
–Sou-chan! Get ready, It’s time for school!
You’re rushing me. But it felt like my grief was becoming numb.
Though as usual, her voice can’t be heard.
Incidentally, something a little strange has started to occur.
I have been, since way back, very weak to mornings, but now I can wake up at 7′ o clock even without an alarm clock.
When it’s near the time for school, I get the illusion that “someone” gently shakes me to wake me up.
Once, I felt the sensation of someone pulling my clothes.
When I looked, I noticed that the buttons were done wrong.
And, when I was heading for school, I heard the noise of something falling.
It turned out to be a book I absolutely had to take to school today. I was able to avoid forgetting it.
(Yukina seems to be looking after me…)
As I reached school, I could feel the gazes of my surroundings.
I had become known as the guy whose girlfriend died on Christmas.
Everyone looks at me with pitiful eyes, but no one calls out to me.
Even so, if someone who isn’t close to me tells me, “I’m sorry for your loss, cheer up soon”, I would probably go crazy, so I am thankful of it.
With heavy steps, I made my way to the classroom alone.
“…………..Ah”
I heard a low, surprised voice. Looking at the place where the voice came from, I found a small girl with a bob cut looking at me.
Akabane Akane, a girl who was, my girlfriend, Shinonome Yukina’s best friend.
Us three used to play and hang out together a lot, but the last time I saw her was on the day of Yukina’s funeral. I don’t remember having a conversation with Yukina at that time. It was a time when I couldn’t think of anything in shock.
Akane was Yukina’s childhood friend since back from kindergarten. Though it’s not something comparable, if we go by the length of relationship, she must have even more of a shock than me. Even though I couldn’t say it into words, I was glad that Akane had come to school safely.
“Yo Akane, Its been since Yukina’s funeral.”
“Uh, yeah…. Sota-kun. It’s been a……. long while.”
When I tried to greet her as brightly as possible, a confused reply came from her. And her gaze seemed to be wandering around over the top of my right shoulder.
I turned around to see if anyone was there, but I couldn’t find anything.
“Akane?”
“Um, Sota-kun. Do your shoulders feel heavy or your body feel sick?”
“Hmm……… I didn’t have an appetite since Yukina’s case but lately I have been eating properly and sleeping well so I think I am fine.”
“Really? Does something like the window of your room suddenly breaking or things breaking not happen?”
I was told something odd.
“No, nothing like that…”
“Oh, I see. But if you have any problems, tell me okay.”
As that was said, she quickly entered the classroom.
“… …”
What was that?
Akane has always been a little weird, and even today she said something a bit strange. Now that I think of it, Akabane Akane had a certain nickname.
No, that was just a kind of badmouthing.
Well , there’s no way a witch exists in the “ordinary” school we attend.
Hence, it is a probably a rumor spread by a girl jealous of Akane being popular with boys or a guy who was rejected by Akane.
But, if.
Akane is a witch.
What if she could see the dead Yukina over my right shoulder.
I looked behind me once again.
–No one was there.
“Yukina”
I called out my former lover’s name such that only I could hear it.
Of course, there is no reply.
Yukina is no more.
I am alone from now on.
And I opened the classroom door.
