Chapter 1

The term "old maid" carries a strong negative connotation in people's conversations. It refers to an older woman who has never married, and her personality is often considered to be somewhat distorted.
However, this is not always the case!
Perhaps a woman who does not marry at a certain age may have some physiological issues, and her estrogen levels may change. However, this does not necessarily lead to a change in personality, and not all old maids will have psychological problems.
The examples I list here are all women who have passed middle age without marrying. Some are quite distorted, while others are very lovable.
Tenth: Ding Minjun
Ding Minjun is the disciple of the Nun Extermination, and the senior sister of Ji Xiaofu and Zhou Zhiruo. In her youth, she opposed Ji Xiaofu, and in her middle age, she caused trouble for Zhou Zhiruo, all because her two junior sisters were both beautiful and favored by their master, threatening her position and dignity as the senior sister.
Ding Minjun, though not a beauty, was still quite attractive, with a pretty face and a delicate appearance, but she had a small-minded heart. The monk Peng called her "Toxic Hands and No Salt."
I guess her hatred for her two junior sisters, besides her desire for the position of master, was largely due to the most fundamental jealousy of women! Jealousy of youth, beauty, and being pursued by men. This is very consistent with people's assumptions about the personality of "old maids."
Ninth: Lin Chaoying
Lin Chaoying was Wang Chongyang's fiancée, a woman who never married and spent her life waiting.
This pair of martial arts experts, who were the most compatible couple, were separated because Wang Chongyang dedicated his life to serving the country and fighting the Jin soldiers, thus neglecting Lin Chaoying, his beloved. Lin Chaoying spent the rest of her life in the ancient tomb, and the wedding trousseau she had prepared was never used.
When Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü got married, Xiaolongnü wore Lin Chaoying's wedding dress. They secretly read the "love letters" Wang Chongyang wrote to Lin Chaoying, which were actually all about military affairs and battles, with not a single word about personal feelings. However, when Lin Chaoying read these letters, she must have been very happy.
Eighth: Han Xiaoying
Han Xiaoying is the seventh of the "Seven Freaks of Jiangnan" and one of Guo Jing's seven masters. In her youth, she was in love with her fifth brother, Zhang Asheng. Although they never made a marriage commitment, they were deeply in love.
During a battle with Mei Chaofeng, Zhang Asheng died. For nearly twenty years afterward, Han Xiaoying lived as a widow, dedicating her life to Zhang Asheng!
Her later life was spent in the love of Guo Jing's mother and the memory of her "husband" Zhang Asheng. When Guo Jing saw her white hair and sighed, my heart ached for her as well.
Seventh: Lan Fenghuang, He Tieshou (He Tixiu)
Lan Fenghuang and He Tieshou are very similar, from their origins to their sects, as if they were of the same lineage.
In "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer," Lan Fenghuang's love life is not mentioned, but her mature charm and free-spirited demeanor leave much to the imagination.
In "The Deer and the Cauldron," the young He Tieshou has become the sixty-year-old He Tixiu, but she still has an extraordinary charm: "Wei Xiaobao saw that the woman was already quite old, but her voice was like that of a young girl. She wore a gold ring on her head, had bare feet, and a flower-embroidered waistband, with a very peculiar appearance. Her hair was already gray, but her face was still white and tender, with many wrinkles at the corners of her eyes. It was hard to tell how old she was; by her hair, she looked about sixty, but by her face, she looked around thirty." He flatteringly called her "Old Sister."
He Tieshou once fell in love with Qingqing, who was dressed as a man. Later, Qingqing became He Tieshou's senior sister. He Tieshou was renamed "He Tixiu" by her master Yuan Chengzhi—a name that is both "cautious" and "guarded," which does not fit her personality at all!
I am truly happy to see that she is still so lovable even in her old age! Her master's conservative nature could not change her true character!
Sixth: Guo Xiang
After the fall of the nation, the loss of her family, and the end of her love, she finally achieved enlightenment and founded the Emei Sect, shining through the ages. She is considered the most accomplished of the old maids.
However, it is unknown how she spent her later years. Was there no regret at all?
Fifth: Li Mochou
Li Mochou, who became distorted by love, is the most vicious of all!
In her youth, she was a "beautiful and gentle good woman" who had not yet become a nun. She fell in love with Lu Zhan yuan, but in the end, Lu Zhan yuan married He Yuanjun. As a result, her personality changed drastically, and she became a shocking female demon!
However, she did not lose her feminine nature. Her sensitivity to the opposite sex, her pursuit of beauty, and the maternal love she showed towards the infant Guo Xiang all gave this tragic figure a human touch.
Jin Yong "arranged" for her to have a brief romance with Gong Sunzhi. I have always thought this was a flaw. Given Li Mochou's character, even if it was mutual exploitation, she would not likely sacrifice her dignity. In the Taiwanese TV series "The Return of the Condor Heroes," Gong Sunzhi looks like Lu Zhan yuan, which makes Li Mochou lose her will. This is a more reasonable guess.
In the song "What is Love in This World," Li Mochou dies in the flames. It is a tragic and beautiful end!
PS: She always had the mark of a virgin on her body!
Fourth: Mei Fanggu
Mei Fanggu loved Shi Qing, but Shi Qing only loved his junior sister Min Rou. Mei Fanggu then kidnapped the second son of Shi Qing and Min Rou, Shi Zhongjian, and left a corpse of a child with a bloodied face, making Shi Qing and Min Rou think their child was dead.
She raised Shi Zhongjian, never showing him a good face, and calling him "bastard" to insult his parents. This shows the depth of her hatred.
Compared to Min Rou, Mei Fanggu was more skilled in martial arts, more talented in literature, better at needlework, and more skilled in cooking, but Shi Qing never showed her any kindness. Shi Qing said, "Mei girl, you are better than my junior sister Min in every way, not only better than her, but better than me. Being with you, I feel ashamed and unworthy." These words were undoubtedly the most hurtful! And they led to Mei Fanggu's death.
Some men indeed do not like strong women, but many do not care. As for which type of man you fall in love with, it depends on your luck.
Third: Nun Extermination
Originally, I did not want to include nuns in the list of "old maids." However, Nun Extermination is too distorted!
The "Three Dings of Hengshan" in "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer" are also nuns, but they are rare virtuous and wise masters! Nun Extermination, on the other hand, is "extreme" and "annihilating" in every way!
She is ruthless towards her enemies, determined to eradicate them completely. She is harsh towards her disciples, killing Ji Xiaofu and forcing Zhou Zhiruo. Even as a Buddhist nun, she dares to have her disciples sacrifice their dignity for gain. Extreme!!!
Fortunately, Jin Yong arranged for Nun Extermination to be Guo Xiang's granddaughter rather than her disciple, otherwise, I would have to doubt whether Guo Xiang had become senile in her old age, passing the position of master to such an inhumane woman!
Second: Jiunan & Tao Hongying
When the beautiful princess Ajiu becomes the stern nun Jiunan, readers cannot help but lament the cruelty of time.
Who caused her tragic life? It was her background as a member of the last imperial family, her mindset of revenge and restoration, and her disappointment in love.
"Exile may erase the hatred of a lost country, but the sorrow of the Chu people still lingers!"
Tao Hongying was a palace maid who served Princess Ajiu during the late Ming dynasty. She waited for her former mistress all her life, seeking the "Forty-Two Chapters Sutra." Her loyalty is evident.
First: Tian Shan Tonglao
This is the oldest of the old maids!!! At 96 years old, she has the body of a 6-year-old due to her cultivation, a remarkable person! I will place her first!
She and her junior sister Li Qiushui competed for the love of their senior brother Wu Yazi, fighting for a lifetime. Only at the end of their lives, when both were exhausted, did they discover that Wu Yazi truly loved Li Qiushui's younger sister. Is this ending tragic or joyful?
To others, Tian Shan Tonglao is a monster. But in the eyes of the maids of Lingjiu Palace, she is the best person, a saint who gave them new life. Perhaps, having been hurt by men, she felt more compassion for the women of the world.
Old maids can also be full of emotion and righteousness.
PS: Among these ten, the most cost-effective is Tonglao. As long as you don't mind her taste, getting her means getting a woman's complete life—whether a lolita, a young girl, a mature woman, or an older woman, she can be all of them! It's just that she grows too fast.
Only a unique woman can be described in one word.
