After killing Wu Tianyun, Ye Yun had enough game points to pay off a third of his debt, but he did not feel relieved.
To kill Wu Tianyun this time, Ye Yun had to use his brain: using three simple traps to make the opponent let down their guard. If the traps worked, great; if not, it would make the opponent think he was panicking and using traps to buy time. As for the scarecrow, if Wu Tianyun did not relax and kick it but instead approached with his gun, Ye Yun could still use two ropes to complete the subsequent steps of lime and chili oil—tying one rope around the scarecrow's neck, so that when the scarecrow was pulled, the small spring inside would release a large amount of grass, forcing the opponent to step back into the second rope loop.
The outcome would be the same.
However, Wu Tianyun's pursuit still made Ye Yun feel a bit frightened.
The last time he angered the game system, it sent a sergeant who had completed six regular missions to hunt him, a rookie. What if he angered the system again?
This time it was an old-style shotgun; next time, would it be a precision sniper rifle?
But if the system continued to assign random tasks that harm innocents, Ye Yun would not be willing to complete them.
Caught between a rock and a hard place, Ye Yun thought of something.
"…Choosing Neutral Evil reduces the probability of the system triggering active criminal random tasks, and the tasks are mainly against the CT camp, but the rewards are reduced by 30%."
Ye Yun knew that for a beginner, the fastest way to grow was to choose the Chaotic Evil (CE) path. As long as he did bad things, each one would be a completed random task, and the infinite rewards would make it hard not to become rich. However, the problem was that Ye Yun was not the kind of person who could do bad things to ordinary people. Moreover, could players on the Chaotic Evil path really make a fortune quietly? Even if they did not attract the CT camp's attention, the government would likely hunt them down. Living in constant fear would surely be exhausting, and one mistake could mean death.
But with his current status, Ye Yun could only expect to get small criminal tasks as regular missions. It would be extremely difficult to immediately choose a camp path.
However, there was one thing…
Ye Yun opened the game store, and after advancing to Lance Corporal, there were more items available.
For example, there were more homemade guns and realistic-looking air guns that were not very threatening, which could probably be bought online. In the handgun series, a real one finally appeared: the Mauser HSC 7.65mm caliber, but this was even less powerful than a more potent air gun, with an effective range of just 40 meters and difficulty making dents in steel plates within 30 meters, making it of limited practical use.
What Ye Yun was looking for was a one-time use item in the miscellaneous category called "Secret Codex," which he exchanged for 200 game points.
This thing looked like a paper crane, which seemed to do little justice to the "codex" in its name. However, when Ye Yun used it, the small thing actually flew.
After dancing in the air for a few seconds, the paper crane burst into a blue-green flame, like ghost fire, instantly burning it to ashes that drifted down to form two lines of small text on the floor.
In the morning light, Ye Yun read the words on the floor.
"Time: August 27, 2019, 7:30 PM."
"Location: 43rd floor, Dihao International Hotel, New District, N City."
As a morning breeze blew in from outside the factory, the ashes on the ground scattered.
Feeling lucky, Ye Yun silently memorized the time and location before preparing to clean up Wu Tianyun's body.
But when he turned to look, his slightly relaxed face immediately tensed.
Wu Tianyun's body… was gone!
Ye Yun jumped up and summoned the Huzi saber from the game badge's storage space, assuming a defensive stance and slowly turning to survey the surroundings.
"What's wrong?" Sun Youxue, who had been startled awake by his sudden movement, rubbed her eyes and looked at Ye Yun curiously.
Ye Yun said in a deep voice, "The body is gone."
"Ah! Body!? What body!?" Sun Youxue shrank back, hugging her knees and hiding in the gap between the machines.
"The body of the guy I killed."
"You killed someone!?" Sun Youxue was shocked, almost crying: "When did you kill someone? After we…?"
Ye Yun frowned, turned to stare at Sun Youxue, and saw that her expression was not feigned. He immediately thought of something.
At that moment, a chill ran through his body, making the cool summer morning feel like a Siberian winter, the cold penetrating his heart as if he were falling into an ice pit!
"Tell me what happened last night."
"What? What did you do last night? You should know…"
"Tell me quickly!!!"
Sun Youxue shivered at Ye Yun's shout, pouted, and teared up: "You were so gentle last night, but now you're shouting at me… Men really just throw you away after they get what they want, don't they?"
Ye Yun forced himself to calm down, trying to soften his expression, and said gently, "Please, just tell me what happened last night… Just a brief summary, please."
Sun Youxue sniffled, "I pulled you out of the bar, and you rode your motorcycle to bring me here… I was willing to give myself to you, but you were so rough…"
Looking at the handsome young man in front of her, she felt more and more wronged: "I admit that last night was the boldest and most rebellious thing I've ever done, but I did like you a bit…"
Ye Yun interrupted her in a deep voice, "After I brought you here last night, before anything happened between us, didn't something else happen?"
He pointed to the wet marks on the ground stained with chili oil and the scattered lime: "Don't you remember these at all?"
"Didn't they look like that from the beginning?" Sun Youxue asked, somewhat surprised, suddenly wondering if the young man had a problem.
Ye Yun's vision went dark, and he had to lean against the machine to keep from falling.
He finally understood—this was what was meant by "exiting the game"!
Not only did the body disappear, but the memory of it in others' minds also vanished!
Without even needing to check, he knew that Wu Tianyun had completely disappeared from the world, along with all the traces of his existence!
Some things, if not witnessed firsthand, would never feel truly terrifying. Although the game system had warned Ye Yun about what "exiting the game" meant, it was only after seeing it with his own eyes that he realized his original understanding of the game's terror was only a fraction of its true nature!
It took Ye Yun more than five minutes to recover, his face pale as he picked up his dirty pants. He then helped Sun Youxue put on the camouflage uniform from Wu Tianyun, and led the quiet girl out of the factory.
The sun had risen halfway, and much of the darkness in the sky had been dispelled.
But what could dispel the darkness in his heart?
