Chapter 5

A woman suddenly leaped out from where the sun was setting, like a sunspot erupting, abrupt and eerie.
Dressed in black hemp clothes and a black veil, with a hairstyle that only men wore, unfortunately, her disguise as a man could only fool the ancients. In Bai Dong's eyes, it was just a joke. This woman moved extremely fast, as swift as a startled deer, her right hand drawing a cold gleam, seemingly fierce and powerful. However, her slender waist and perky buttocks ultimately betrayed her, and the closer she got, the clearer her delicate and charming breaths became.
Bai Dong drew his sword, assuming a Western fencing stance. He could already see the woman's face; the black veil only covered below her eyes, revealing almond-shaped eyes that were watery and very beautiful, though they carried a hint of killing intent.
To Bai Dong, anyone other than the old and young men of Yishi Village needed to be carefully guarded against, and women were no exception. Moreover, from her attire, it was clear that this girl was either a bandit or a wandering knight. Who knew if she might suddenly stab him? One must be cautious to sail for a thousand years, and there would be no place to cry if one capsized in a ditch.
"Hmm!"
The black-clad woman stopped, looking at Bai Dong with a mix of surprise and suspicion. With her martial arts skills, she could see that Bai Dong was quite skilled. Although his starting stance was somewhat absurd and unfamiliar, it made her hesitant to move, as if any attack she made would be preempted by him.
She smelled good. The black-clad woman was drenched in sweat, and the wind carried a faint, pleasant fragrance. It wasn't the scent of modern cosmetics or incense, but a natural body fragrance that emanated from her skin. Bai Dong took a few breaths, his heart slightly stirred, but he tightened his grip on the sword. "Who are you?" Heroes find it hard to resist beauty, but he didn't want to end up like Lu Bu, dying without a place to cry for justice.
"I..." The black-clad woman tried to answer but spat out a large amount of black blood, unable to continue. She sat down, panting heavily, her eyes losing their luster.
"Your internal organs are injured. Spitting out black blood is a good sign, but you will lose your ability to move for at least half a day..."
Bai Dong looked at the black-clad woman's right shoulder. Under the torn black clothes, a large patch of snow-white skin was exposed, with a winding scar, and blood was still seeping out.
"You were hit hard first, clearly suffering internal injuries, yet you still tried to escape. Along the way, you were also injured in the shoulder. It's quite impressive that you managed to struggle here. The pursuers can't be far, right?"
Although he hadn't been a forensic doctor in his previous life, he had seen many injury reports and could tell at a glance whether the injuries were minor, moderate, or severe. Fortunately, this black-clad girl had a good foundation and didn't seem to be severely injured to the point of disability.
"Save me, or kill me. The pursuers are coming. If you save me, I will repay you in the future; if you kill me, my head is worth a hundred gold pieces. You are a man, be decisive!"
The black-clad woman struggled a few times but eventually gave up. She had held her breath to run here after being severely injured, and once she lost her breath, she couldn't get up again. She could only entrust her life to this unfamiliar young man. Perhaps driven by the instinct for survival, she, who usually treated men with disdain, unconsciously sent him a flirtatious glance.
"Stop throwing me those seductive looks. Do you want to throw yourself at me or what? Have some decency, will you? We have no grudges or enmity. Why would I kill you? Is your head really that valuable? I don't think so."
Bai Dong shook his head. Wasn't she just a crazy woman? Always talking about killing and fighting. He was a civilized person and wouldn't kill or rape her.
"You..." The black-clad woman looked at Bai Dong with some surprise. This young man clearly had a Qin accent, but his words were strangely toned, mentioning things like seductive looks and decency, which were incomprehensible. However, she could see that he had no ill intentions and no killing intent in his eyes, so she relaxed a bit.
"My luck is bad, meeting you this big trouble. Since I don't want to kill you, it would be cruel to leave you to die... Forget it, since you're a woman, I'll help you this time..."
Bai Dong muttered as he walked to the black-clad woman, raising his hand to pull off her veil. Saving someone without knowing what she looked like seemed like a losing proposition. But he pulled his hand back, shaking his head. "No, who knows what strange rules you have? If I pull off your veil, I might have to marry you, and who knows what you look like below the nose? If you have a snub nose or a big mouth, wouldn't I be losing out?" Jin Yong's novels were full of such women, and Mu Wanqing was a prime example. Bai Dong reined himself in, suddenly alert.
The black-clad woman widened her eyes. This man, with his sword and book, clearly looked like a scholar, though he wore a cloth headband. Were all Qin scholars so impolite? And how did he know about the rules of her sect? If he pulled off her veil, she wouldn't marry him, but she could consider killing him.
Bai Dong didn't realize he had inadvertently avoided a crisis. He picked up the black-clad woman and carried her to a cave. He had planned to spend the night here and head to Lantian the next day. The cave was well-chosen, sunny, and dry, with no wild beasts inside. He started a fire to drive away insects and pests, making it perfect for the night.
The black-clad woman glared at Bai Dong. If he dared to touch her, she would fight to the death, even if it meant dying from her injuries. Fortunately, Bai Dong wasn't interested in her. He saved her because he didn't want to kill her and didn't want to see her killed by the pursuers, which would be a bad omen.
He laid her down in the cave, grabbed the hem of her clothes, and tore off a piece of cloth. Just as she was about to resist, Bai Dong glared at her. "Shut up if you don't want to die." He then fetched water, added some precious salt, and poured it over her shoulder wound. The black-clad woman screamed in pain, her almond-shaped eyes wide as bells.
"Endure it. If you can't even bear a little pain, how can you talk about having me cut off your head for a reward? Do you find it fun to talk big and pretend to be a hero?" He carefully cleaned her wound and bandaged it, then looked at his work, nodding in satisfaction. He patted her head. "Your wound should be fine, but your internal injuries depend on your luck. I've done my best." He then picked up her sword.
"What are you doing!" The black-clad woman, enduring the intense pain in her shoulder, grabbed the hilt of the sword.
"Rubbish. If I'm going to act, I'll do it thoroughly. The pursuers are coming soon. If I don't make some preparations, won't I be seen through at a glance?" Bai Dong glared at her, untied her hair, and lightly cut his left cheek with her sword, just enough to let a little blood show, a shallow wound that wouldn't hinder future recovery. The black-clad woman understood and smiled, seemingly in gratitude, or perhaps laughing at the idea of a man so careful of himself, who, while pretending to be injured to fool the pursuers, handled her so gently, lacking the fierce and heroic spirit of a true warrior.
"You stay here for the night. I'm going, and whether I return or not, it's like the wind howling and the water cold at Yi River. If you're still alive by tomorrow, leave on your own." Bai Dong turned and left. Saving a life was better than building a seven-story pagoda. He had done such a good deed just as he was starting out, so he hoped his future would be smooth and prosperous.
"Wind howling and water cold at Yi River, a hero can go and return? Are all Qin men so interesting?"
Watching Bai Dong's back, the black-clad woman smiled again, then winced as her injuries were aggravated, her eyebrows furrowing.
