Wansheng didn't know Ferguson had come.
In the just-concluded match, the Manchester United youth team ultimately won 2-0 against their opponents, so Wansheng was in a good mood. When he heard the staff member say that McGinnis wanted him to go to the office, he whistled a tune and walked over leisurely.
McGinnis? Is that the guy who interviewed me? He must have seen today's match and thought my coaching performance was good, so he wants to give me a raise, Wansheng thought happily.
But when he walked into McGinnis's office and saw the things on the desk, his good mood vanished.
There were some banknotes and a stack of documents.
If his memory served him right, those documents were his resume and identity verification materials and other related things.
If it was just the banknotes, it meant he was getting paid; if it was just the identity verification materials, it might just be some inquiries, perhaps even a promotion.
But with both together, it could only mean dismissal.
The atmosphere in the office became awkward.
McGinnis looked at Wansheng, tapping his fingers on the desk, and finally spoke, "Wansheng, after a week of observation, you do not meet the requirements for the Manchester United youth team coach, so, I'm sorry." His face was full of regret, as if he was very sorry to dismiss Wansheng.
"Why?" Wansheng found it hard to accept. "Wasn't my coaching performance good? My team just won 2-0 against the North District youth team. As far as I know, the North District youth team won against us last month."
McGinnis shrugged, "I'm not sure, it's Mr. Ferguson's decision."
"Mr. Ferguson?" Wansheng was taken aback. He knew that Ferguson was the No. 1 at Manchester United, the legendary coach. Manchester United's dominance in the Premier League was closely tied to Ferguson's coaching. Because of this, he found it hard to imagine how his coaching a youth team could be related to Ferguson.
He looked at McGinnis suspiciously and asked, "Is it really because of this?"
"Yes, that's right," McGinnis affirmed.
"Really?" Wansheng asked again.
For some reason, under Wansheng's intense gaze, McGinnis suddenly felt a bit nervous. He hesitated but affirmed again, "Yes, it's Mr. Ferguson's decision." He felt that by blaming everything on Ferguson, there would be no problem. Wansheng wouldn't dare to question Ferguson, let alone even see him.
Wansheng, who had lived in the lower echelons of society in his previous life, could see through McGinnis's nervousness at a glance and had his answer, "It's you, isn't it!"
"How could it be?" McGinnis was a bit flustered.
Under Wansheng's intense gaze, he finally couldn't help but stand up and admit it, "So what if it's me? I'm in charge of Manchester United's youth training, and I have the right to dismiss you."
"But why?"
"For no reason!" McGinnis pointed to the documents on the desk, "You know very well how you got into the team a week ago! I haven't even had time to look at your resume yet!"
"But I haven't done anything wrong."
"So what?" McGinnis walked over to Wansheng and pointed to the ground, "Do you know where you are? This is Manchester United, the great Manchester United Football Club. Do you think just anyone can come here? If it were a normal interview, I would have rejected you outright."
"…?" Wansheng listened.
"Look at yourself, you're an Asian, right?" McGinnis said with a proud look, "I don't have racial prejudice, but can Asians play football? Have any famous players or coaches come from Asia? No, no, none at all, I can't think of any! And you're too young, I don't think you have the ability to find a coaching job at Manchester United. Do you understand?"
Wansheng stared at McGinnis, clenching his teeth.
"Don't look at me like that, young man." McGinnis walked to the desk, picked up a cigarette, and took a deep puff before turning and saying proudly, "You know I'm telling the truth. At your age, you should be playing football, not coaching. Manchester United is not a place for just anyone. If you're not naive, you should have known you would be dismissed."
McGinnis picked up the documents and banknotes from the desk and put them in Wansheng's hand, "Take it, 400 pounds. Manchester United won't withhold your salary."
Wansheng clenched the documents and banknotes tightly, his veins bulging on his hand.
But he held back.
He stared at McGinnis and said, word by word, "Thank you for making me understand this, but I'm sure you'll regret it!"
McGinnis shrugged indifferently and glanced at Wansheng with disdain, "What are you still doing here? You've been dismissed, you're no longer part of Manchester United. So, you're not welcome here." He made a gesture to indicate Wansheng should leave.
Wansheng looked at McGinnis and nodded forcefully, "I told you, you'll regret it."
With that, he turned and left the office.
As he walked out of the office building, Wansheng felt incredibly frustrated. He had been thinking about his football coaching career, but he never expected this outcome. Thinking about McGinnis's face earlier, he had the urge to punch him.
He turned and looked back at the office window, seeing McGinnis standing there, as if afraid he wouldn't leave.
Wansheng pointed at him and shouted, "I told you, you'll regret it!"
McGinnis shrugged again.
Wansheng shook his head and turned to leave the Carrington training ground. From this moment on, he was once again jobless.
Standing at the entrance of the Carrington training ground, Wansheng felt a bit lost. He didn't know where to go. He had been staying in a small hotel for the past week and hadn't had time to find a place to live in Manchester.
Should he leave now?
Wansheng thought about it, but before making a decision, he waited at the entrance of the training ground. Half an hour later, he saw his target—a middle-aged man walking out of the Carrington training ground, holding a camera and reading some documents in his hand.
Wansheng approached him and greeted him, "Hey, hello."
"Hello?" The middle-aged man was a bit puzzled, as he didn't recognize Wansheng.
Wansheng didn't mind. He took out his brick phone, opened a photo file, and showed it to the man, asking with a smile, "How about it? Interested?"
The middle-aged man was taken aback, "This is... McGinnis?"
Wansheng nodded, "500 pounds, how about it?"
The middle-aged man thought for a moment and said, "I want to confirm one thing, the woman, is she his wife?"
"Of course not."
Wansheng showed him again, and the man finally made up his mind, "500 pounds is a bit expensive, 300 pounds?"
Wansheng shook his head, "400 pounds, or no deal."
"Deal."
The two happily made the transaction.
Watching the middle-aged man leave excitedly, Wansheng could already imagine what would happen tomorrow. If there was a dispute in McGinnis's family, his help to McGinnis's wife would be significant, ensuring she would get more assets.
Yes, helping others has always been something Wansheng enjoys doing.
