Chapter 24. Today, I Was Really Happy
Yu Ze went to the balcony to give Song Yan a call.
“Who is Zhou Meng Ye?” He went straight to the point.
“Who?” Song Yan asked.
“I slipped out midway, so don’t you act stupid and waste time,” Yu Ze whispered, “Your friend from when you were little, Zhou, Meng, Ye, he remembers you quite well.”
Song Yan paused for a moment, “You said when I was little, I kind of remember…what about him? He came today? What the fxck – I’m talking about my brother.”
Yu Ze said, “It’s clear Song Qi did not allow me to bring you over because he made plans for Zhou Meng Ye, so this could be considered as bamboo horses* meeting again, or a marriage interview?”
* 竹馬 – from the idiom 青梅竹馬 green plums and bamboo horse which means ‘a couple who grew up as childhood friends’. The ‘plum’ means the girl, the ‘bamboo horse’ means the boy, but there’s obviously only bamboo horses here ~
Song Yan laughed, “Teacher Yu, are you being jealous?”
Yu Ze obviously knew he shouldn’t talk rubbish with Song Yan at such a time, yet he couldn’t help but let himself be carried away by him. He laughed as he said, “I have no need to be jealous, after all, the one who’s currently enjoying the chase is me.”
Only then did Song Yan feel a sense of danger, he honestly replied, “The Zhou Family are old acquaintances of our family, can be considered somewhat like relatives. Zhou Meng Ye often came to our house to play when we were little, but our house always had many children there playing with me and that group of us were all around the same age. When he was young, he was a little fatty, at least that’s the only impression I have of him….he simply isn’t the type that gets doted on.”
“Gets doted on? You really do take yourself to be a little emperor ah?” Yu Ze couldn’t help but ridicule him.
Song Yan immediately let out a plea, “Teacher Yu, don’t bite the phrases and chew the characters* anymore, it really was nothing more than just children playing house.”
* 咬文嚼字 – idiom; to bite phrases and chew characters; be excessively particular about wording
Yu Ze interrupted him, “You didn’t bully him before, did you?”
“Why would I bully a little fatty?” Song Yan asked.
“Because it seems like something you would do?” Yu Ze replied.
Song Yan let out a, “Hey!”, before he continued, “What kind of image do I have in your heart? Could it be Zhou Meng Ye said something to you? Did he say I bullied him?”
Yu Ze thought about it, while that indeed didn’t happen, but that could also be because Song Qi was still there. He said, “As soon as we met, Zhou Meng Ye asked me if I was excited to see him. I even believed you had some sort of ill-fated relationship* with him.”
* 孽緣 – ill-fated relationship; the results of this lifetime (karma) that happened due to a previous lifetime (Yu Ze most likely joking, but here he meant that Zhou Meng Ye was here to look for trouble with Song Yan XD)
“No, me and him are really just ordinary childhood buddies. You have to believe me!” Song Yan replied.
“I believe you,” Yu Ze told him.
Yu Ze believed Song Yang’s words came from the heart, just as Song Yan himself had said, the people that’d played with him were too numerous in numbers – to say nothing of a small companion from childhood – so him not having a particular impression was extremely normal. But if this was changed to Zhou Meng Ye’s perspective, perhaps it would become a completely different story.
He could only say that while he roughly understood a bit of Zhou Meng Ye’s circumstances from Song Yan, it didn’t help much with the current situation at all.
Right before he hung up the phone, Yu Ze added, “Oh right, I feel I have the obligation to first tell you, the former fatty has reversed his fortune and is now rather good looking.”
Song Yan suddenly became angry, “What are you telling me this for?” He ended the call.
Yu Ze himself also didn’t know why he’d emphasized this point to Song Yan, perhaps he was giving Song Yan an immunization shot* beforehand.
* figuratively used here to mean ‘forewarning’
Yu Ze went back to the table. Song Qi and Zhou Meng Yu were in the middle of some small talk, and seeing that Yu Ze had returned, Song Qi expressed that he still some things to do and so he would take his leave first.
Lu Qiu Yi also rose to leave with him, he asked Song Qi, “Are you going back to the company?”
Song Qi nodded, “You don’t have to accompany me; just go wherever you want to go yourself.” As he spoke, he even pressed a kiss to Lu Qiu Yi’s forehead, and although somewhat superficial, this already seemed quite good for a busy tycoon.
Yu Ze actually kind of wanted to chat with Lu Qiu Yi; while he hadn’t been particularly close friends with Lu Qiu Yi in the past, they still could’ve been considered as ordinary friends. He’d always felt that Song Qi was a thoroughly eccentric person; he’d even imagined* that perhaps Song Qi had some sort of special fetish and thus needed to keep someone to satisfy himself. Lu Qiu Yi also didn’t have any new works recently and if his name trended, it was all due to his scandal with Song Qi, obviously due to him being busy accompanying Song Qi. While Yu Ze didn’t know how large the price Song Qi had spent to make Lu Qiu Yi feel it was worth to be kept, but Lu Qiu Yi was still young and shouldn’t yet give up on his career.
* 腦補過 – more literally ‘brain patched up before’; not that Yu Ze had been imagining about Song Qi, but that Yu Ze’s brain filled the missing pieces with imagination, due to associating Song Qi with a certain image (will edit this once I think of something better ><)
But as he currently had Song Yan’s identity, it was completely inconvenient to talk of such an in-depth topic with Lu Qiu Yi and would most certainly cause misunderstandings.
Furthermore, other than looking somewhat idle to the point of being bored, Lu Qiu Yi looked completely normal, so perhaps Lu Qiu Yi himself was also content with the situation? Yu Ze couldn’t say for sure.
Song Qi and Lu Qiu Yi had left, Yu Ze and Zhou Meng Ye were finally left by themselves.
Zhou Meng Ye also became much more relaxed, and he asked, “Do you still remember when we were little….”
“To be honest, I forgot a lot of things,” Yu Ze told him.
Zhou Meng Ye was startled, then he smiled bitterly as he said, “But I remember everything. That time my older cousin* kept laughing at me for being fat and had pinched me real hard on the face – it was even you who protected me.”
* female
So it seemed it was he who had misunderstood Song Yan, Yu Ze thought. Not only did Song Yan not bully the person before, he’d even quite the mind of a knight.
Just that, while Song Yan himself probably didn’t remember, it had always been remembered by the other.
He’d seen too many scripts and stories; if this took place inside a story, then this would surely be the beginning of a lovely marriage predestined by fate.
It was just a pity that Zhou Meng Ye didn’t know, that the Song Yan he was now facing was no longer Song Yan anymore.
“I’m sorry,” Yu Ze said.
Zhou Meng Ye began to laugh, “Why apologize?”
“I really don’t remember it very well.” Yu Ze replied. He wasn’t able to give a response to Zhou Meng Ye’s memories.
“We were all just kids at that time,” Zhou Meng Ye said, “To be honest, I also didn’t really take it to heart. And you would sometimes even be mean to me; we’d be arguing one moment, but on good-terms the next, it was rather enjoyable.”
Yu Ze no longer brought up the topic of childhood and spoke only of some current topics. Zhou Meng Ye’s expression was all along attentive and gentle as he looked at Yu Ze.
After the meal, Zhou Meng Ye asked Yu Ze if he’d time that afternoon. Yu Ze of course made an excuse; he felt that if he hadn’t, it would at once become a genuinely real date.
As he sent Zhou Meng Ye away, Zhou Meng Ye said, “Song Yan, you’ve changed, I’ve also changed.”
Yu Ze smiled, “Have I changed?”
Zhou Meng Ye nodded, “You’ve became much more gentler – more gentle, more considerate, the exact same as I’d imagined. I don’t know why, but ever since I was young, I’d always just felt that one day, you would become the way you are today.”
No, he didn’t. Yu Ze replied in his heart.
Zhou Meng Ye’s eyes were sparkling, shining as he softly said, “Today, I was really happy.”
He threw himself over, hugged Yu Ze for a while and, thankfully, quickly let go.
As he watched Zhou Meng Ye leave, Yu Ze felt that he and Song Yan would soon have to face a huge problem – this Zhou Meng Ye seemed extremely proactive in his desire to capture ‘Song Yan’.
That afternoon, Song Yan rushed to the theater. Yu Ze was right then rehearsing with the young actors and actresses, but Song Yan drove everyone else out of the room as soon as he arrived. He wanted to have a discussion with Yu Ze.
“How could you give him hope!” Song Yan almost prostrated* himself in front of Yu Ze.
* 五體投地 – explaining this idiom b/c interesting. Literally five parts of the body touching the floor –> two hands + two knees + 1 forehead XDDDD; but it’s usually in admiration/reverently used
Yu Ze thought his reaction was somewhat excessive.
“I was only being polite to him, how is that ‘giving him hope’? If you want to say it like this, you are more over the top with Xu Shi.”*
* the meaning here is that Song Yan was too excessive towards Xu Shi -> as in did even less towards refusing Xu Shi (i think?) (will remove once think of better phrasing)
Once Song Yan heard the words ‘Xu Shi’, he immediately said, “I’ve already thoroughly taken care of him and have choked all his hopes away. You can relax; in the future he would never bother you again.”
“How do you want me to treat Zhou Meng Ye?” Yu Ze asked.
“Make him give up,” Song Yan replied.
Yu Ze opened his cellphone, placed it in front of Song Yan, “This is a picture of him now.”
Song Yan glanced at it, was stunned, but he very quickly returned to his senses and said, “That’s it? Not even a tenth of how good you look.” He patted at his own current face.
“The problem now is that I think the members of the Song Family quite like him,” Yu Ze said, “Him being able to make your older brother personally come out to pull strings shows that the Song Family really approves of you two being together. I assume the Zhou Family also has a lot of power?”
Song Yan knew, Yu Ze was correct on this point; a marital connection with the Zhou Family was indeed something good.
“So how am I to make him give up without saying a thing, and also without hurting the faces of the two families?” Yu Ze asked.
“There is a method,” Song Yan said, “But I’m not sure if you’ll be willing.”
Author has something to say: Big Bro’s CP’s career had already appeared in the text, but the CP himself has not come online yet.
Translator has something to say: Aw, jealous Yu Ze.
