Chapter 26. Yu Ze Shuddered At The Thought
Song Ruo Zuo was extremely confident in what he said. That was, of course, only natural – as he was educating his own son, his words most definitely came from the bottom of his own heart, and so, every word that he said was something he believed firmly without a doubt in.
“You see, I have never asked about those you’ve dated before. And those you date in the future – I also won’t care. But marriage is different, you must be careful when choosing.”
Song Ruo Zuo even seemed to somewhat think himself an open-minded father.
It wasn’t as if Yu Ze hadn’t ever met this type of person before, but those people were either figments of imagination or someone else’s father – none of them had anything to do with him. But Song Ruo Zuo was right now in front of him, as his “father”.
Song Ruo Zuo looked at Yu Ze and asked, “Are you listening?”
Yu Ze’s expression was slightly indifferent, but he still nodded, “I’m listening.”
Song Ruo Zuo forcefully slung a hand around his son’s shoulder, “I knew you would understand.”
Yu Ze used to feel that Song Yan looked somewhat like Song Ruo Zuo, but now that he again took a look at him, he didn’t find them similar. Their temperaments were completely different. While Song Yan’s confidence could make one annoyed, he still had his cute points and also carried along with him that sparkle unique to youth. Song Ruo Zuo’s conceit, on the other hand, was more like the ignorance of the insane – it had been worsened by age and was stifling to the point of making it hard for one to breathe.
* ignorance of the insane -> that someone who’s insane/mad doesn’t know that they are the one that’s insane/mad
Could it be that Song Yan would one day turn like Song Ruo Zuo? Yu Ze shuddered at the thought.
Song Ruo Zuo again continued, “You’ve been recently working on that theater, perhaps you might even get into the film and television sector. If it’s because you want to do this, I won’t oppose. If you handle it well, it’ll be quite a help towards public opinion about the Song Family and will also provide publicity through the media. But if you are doing all this just to please a certain someone….”
Yu Ze knew what he was implying. “This is something I want to do myself,” he replied, “it has nothing to do with anyone else.”
His voice was firm and calm as he spoke. And as this was the truth, the words came out in a clear* and magnanimous manner.
* 問心無愧 idiom; to have a clear conscience, to feel one has done one’s best upon self-examination
Song Ruo Zuo was startled, but as he wasn’t able to retract the words he’d just spoken, he could only pat his son’s shoulder and say, “Just as long as your heart clearly understands. As expected of my good son.”
Song Ruo Zuo finally let go of him. When Yu Ze turned to leave, Song Ruo Zuo gave another word of warning, “Xiao Zhou* will be coming to grandpa’s birthday banquet. You take good care of him.”
* Xiao for endearment (little/young); Zhou for ‘Zhou Meng Ye’ by context
Yu Ze could see that between Zhou Meng Ye and “Yu Ze”, Song Ruo Zuo was completely leaning towards Zhou Meng Ye.
He wasn’t the least bit surprised at Song Ruo Zuo’s choice.
As Song Ruo Zuo was going to stay the night in the old family home, Yu Ze first took his leave to return to his own villa.
Yu Ze had just arrived and was just about to take a soak to relieve his fatigue when Song Yan came to his door.
Song Yan was waving his hands as he danced*, seemingly in a good mood – perhaps owing to the wine he’d drunk. And as soon as he saw Yu Ze, he right away threw himself at him.
* 手舞足蹈 idiom; hands dance and feet trip; dancing and gesticulating for joy
“Teacher Yu!” Song Yan loudly laughed.
Once Yu Ze saw him like this, his first reaction was to smile, before he then asked,” How much did you drink?”
Song Yan thought for a bit, “Very little, very little, it’s this body of yours that can’t hold the drinks well. I assure you though, I was especially brilliant when I was onstage presenting the award; didn’t damage your reputation by even a bit!”
Yu Ze supported his frame and the two of them toppled to sit on the sofa. Yu Ze then poured a cup of green tea for him, to help him sober up.
“Did anything interesting happen at the opening ceremony?” Yu Ze also began to ask about a few of his old friends.
“They’re good, all good,” Song Yan replied, “Your friends are all really concerned for you, asking you….asking me when I’ll take on a new drama. They even recommended me some scripts. I made Xiao Chen write it down for me.”
Yu Ze laughed, “I will take a look.”
Song Yan then mysteriously asked, “Guess – guess who I also saw.”
Yu Ze spoke a few names, Song Yan replied that it wasn’t. Yu Ze again guessed, “Zhou Meng Ye?”
Song Yan wasn’t happy to hear this name, “Are you still thinking about him?”
Yu Ze didn’t guess anymore, “Then who is it?”
“It’s Qiao Ruo Ming,” Song Yan replied.
Yu Ze let out an “Oh”, before he fell silent. Song Yan reached out and grabbed hold of his arm, “What did you think happened between me and Qiao Ruo Ming?”
“It has been a while since you last met and you have discovered that he is actually still rather cute?” Yu Ze asked.
Song Yan pftted in laughter, his voice was soft as he spoke, “Teacher Yu ah Teacher Yu, where’s the imagination you’re so proud of? Your imagined story line is just too tasteless.”
Yu Ze’s interest was finally piqued by the other; he changed to a more comfortable posture and asked, “Then what in the world happened? It’s not like you picked a fight with him?”
“Yeah,” Song Yan replied.
Yu Ze looked at him,”You didn’t.”
“Lemme first say it wasn’t me who provoked him,” Song Yan protested, “Everything can be blamed on Xiao Chen. As he didn’t verify the seating plan, my seat ended up being extremely close to Qiao Ruo Ming’s.”
He began to vividly and colorfully describe the details.
“…Qiao Ruo Ming sat at an angle to me; I could easily meet his eyes. I, of course, wanted to ignore him as much as possible, but he just kept looking at me and, every now and then, he’d even roll his eyes at me.”
“You didn’t glare at him in return, did you?” Yu Ze asked.
“Am I that childish?” Song Yan shot back, “Of course I knew there were cameras everywhere in the venue. Qiao Ruo Ming didn’t care if the cameras caught him rolling his eyes, but I will not allow the cameras to capture an ugly expression – but Teacher Yu, a roll of your eyes must be a very good-looking roll of the eyes indeed!”
“There wasn’t the need,” Yu Ze shook his head.
“I really wanted to ignore him,” Song Yan continued, “But you definitely can’t imagine what Qiao Ruo Ming stopped me outside the bathroom to say. He said, in his own words – ‘So you think standing next to Second Young Master Song is amazing huh?’, ‘You’ve been deceived by him’, ‘He marked me before’.”
Yu Ze didn’t say a word.
“I really didn’t mark him before!” Song Yan defended.
“I believe you. You didn’t mark him before,” Yu Ze said.
He again thought of that odd Omega pheromone scent of Qiao Ruo Ming’s. But, he still felt there wasn’t the need to bring it up with Song Yan.
Song Yan continued, “But I was very angry at that moment. So I replied – ‘Of course it’s amazing, Second Young Master Song is just terribly in love* with me!’ – you can’t say I lied to him, you also can’t say this isn’t true, because, I indeed do really love myself.”
* 死去活來 – idiom; to suffer terribly; within an inch of one’s life
Yu Ze thought about what Qiao Ruo Ming’s expression would’ve been; he couldn’t help the laugh that slipped out.
He and Song Yan both laughed for quite a while.
Song Yan then added, “It’s only today I’ve realized that ‘Song Second’ seems to be my nickname.”
* 宋二 -> Song Second -> Song Er -> ‘Er’ can mean simple-minded/stupid; used like ‘你很二’ (you are very stupid)
Yu Ze right then really did laugh all the harder, “Otherwise? You thought that ‘Song Second’ only meant your position in the family?”
“Qiao Ruo Ming’s strategy wasn’t bad,” Song Yan said, “To belittle ‘Song Second’ in front of ‘Yu Ze’ like crazy. Going by my original personality, I might’ve really went to find him to settle accounts, or more rather call it ‘hold him accountable’. But right now, I just can’t gather the interest….”
After Yu Ze finally finished laughing, he finally asked that question again, “Why haven’t you marked any Omegas before? I thought people like you….would have long marked before.”
Author has something to say: Tomorrow entering V at 00:00 AM, an update of three chapters. Will be entering a new phase, a lot of things will happen.
Translator also has something to say: This is the last free chapter on jjwxc, starting from next chapter, I will be purchasing the following chapters from jjwxc myself. If anyone else also wants to support the author, please refer to shokotranslate’s guide to jjwxc.
Tbh, I originally wanted to make this a four chapter update, but my motivation died out when I saw the length of the next chapter. The author’s celebration update does indeed consist of a three-in-one chapter, for a total of 8000+ characters. That’s around 2.5 times the average chapter of SBHA. Yay ~ =.=
