For the next half month, Kang Jianfei and Hu Juncai wandered around Kowloon. During this time, Aunt Liang Ying accompanied them to the household registration office to process their ID cards. The process went surprisingly smoothly; after submitting their photos and registering their basic information, with a local resident as a guarantor and paying a fee, they just had to wait for the cards.
Such opportunities were rare. By October next year, the Hong Kong government would order all undocumented residents to obtain ID cards within three days, with no further extensions. By January the following year, the government would abolish the law that granted ID cards to mainlanders upon arrival in Hong Kong. In the future, to obtain a Hong Kong ID card, one would need to reside in Hong Kong for seven years, have a stable and legal job, and have at least three Hong Kong residents as guarantors.
After more than ten days, Kang Jianfei and Hu Juncai finally received their new ID cards. Hu Juncai was so excited that he trembled all over and lost his ID card on the same day. Everyone helped search for it all day, only to find that he had left it on the counter at the household registration office.
After half a month in Hong Kong, Hu Juncai called his cousin, who said he was still fishing at sea and hadn't returned. Hu Juncai thought that if his cousin wasn't there, he might not be welcomed as a poor relative. So, he decided to stay with Kang Jianfei at Wu Chenggang's house.
Kowloon wasn't that big, and after half a month of wandering, they were tired of it. Kang Jianfei and Hu Juncai decided to stay home and watch TV all day.
One day, Aunt Liang Ying went to buy groceries, and Aunt Zhou Mingfang was in the master bedroom soothing a baby to sleep.
In the living room, Hu Juncai turned on the TV and whispered to Kang Jianfei, "Fei, has your uncle forgotten about helping you find a job? We've been eating for half a month, and staying at home isn't a solution."
Kang Jianfei sat on the sofa, legs crossed, reading the *Industrial and Commercial Daily* with great interest. He said, "Your uncle hasn't forgotten; he just has his difficulties."
"What difficulties?" Hu Juncai asked.
Kang Jianfei explained, "After living here for so long, haven't you seen what kind of person my uncle is? He's a good-hearted, hardworking man. He's a lighting technician, so he spends most of his time on set, with limited social connections. The only jobs he can recommend are related to his field. But he just transferred from Jia Yi TV to his new job, and he's still trying to establish himself. It's hard for him to help us. And with his personality, he won't tell anyone until everything is settled. Don't worry about it."
"Is that so?" Hu Juncai scratched his head. Seeing Kang Jianfei still leisurely reading the newspaper, he couldn't help but say, "But you can't just wait around! If my cousin lived in Kowloon, I would have gone out to find a job long ago."
Kang Jianfei replied, "I'm not just waiting; I read the newspaper every day."
"Can reading the newspaper put food on the table?" Hu Juncai teased.
"Who knows," Kang Jianfei flipped through the newspaper and pointed to a news article, "Look, the Hong Kong MTR is set to open in half a month, and they've invited many celebrities to attend the opening ceremony. The MTR line from Shek Kip Mei to Kowloon starts near us, and this is a historic event for Hong Kong."
Hu Juncai asked, "What's the MTR?"
Kang Jianfei explained, "Simply put, it's a railway built underground."
Hu Juncai asked curiously, "Why build it underground? Wouldn't it be better to build it on the surface? Digging tunnels is a waste of resources in a capitalist society!"
Kang Jianfei didn't bother to explain further and said, "If you want to do well in Hong Kong, you should read the newspaper more often. At the very least, familiarize yourself with traditional Chinese characters to avoid making mistakes in the future."
"That's true," Hu Juncai found an old newspaper from a few days ago and quickly became engrossed in it.
Kang Jianfei glanced at the newspaper and saw it was the *Ming Pao Evening News*, which was serializing Wen Rui'an's *The Heroic Legend of the Chinese Empire*.
After finishing the serialized content, Hu Juncai exclaimed, "This novel is so good! Where's the next issue?"
"Please, you're reading a novel from the middle and still enjoying it," Kang Jianfei helped him search through the old newspapers and then slapped his forehead, "I remember, your aunt used that newspaper to wrap something."
"Where is it? Where is that newspaper?" Hu Juncai asked anxiously.
Kang Jianfei said, "Probably thrown away. If you want to read martial arts novels, just go to the bookstore and buy a few Jin Yong books. Reading serialized stories is tiring."
"I only have a few dollars left," Hu Juncai buried his head in the pile of old newspapers, looking for any martial arts novels, regardless of whether the content was continuous.
Kang Jianfei, bored after half a month, decided to write a martial arts novel. He ran to his cousin Wu Ruiqing's room, rummaged through it, and finally found a notebook and a ballpoint pen. He slumped on the sofa and started writing.
Kang Jianfei originally wanted to write *The Search for the Supernatural* or *Kunlun*, but after starting, he found his writing skills were terrible. The good plot he had in mind completely lost its essence when he wrote it down.
Kang Jianfei had been an extra for a few years and then a photographer. He had even thought about becoming a director, but he hadn't secured funding before he was transported to this era.
Writing a novel is very different from making a TV series. The former uses words to build a world, while the latter uses camera shots to tell a story. If Kang Jianfei were to make a TV series, it would be excellent, but this doesn't mean he can write a good novel. Even if he remembers the plot clearly, it doesn't save him from the struggle of writing.
This is a matter of writing skill. Those with a talent for writing can make even mundane content interesting, while those without it can make even the most novel plot seem dull and unengaging.
After thinking for a long time, Kang Jianfei finally decided, "I'll write *The Story of the Qin Seeker*. The writing style of this novel is simple, and it's a穿越爽文 (穿越小说, a novel about a person from the present being transported to the past and experiencing a satisfying adventure)."
To make the story more engaging and immersive, Kang Jianfei set the protagonist, Xiang Shaolong, as a Hong Kong commoner. He didn't mention any time machine; Xiang Shaolong was just humiliated by a rich person and then mysteriously transported to the past, where he became incredibly strong.
Kang Jianfei and Hu Juncai, one writing and the other reading, spent the day engrossed in their respective activities.
In the evening, Wu Ruiqing and Wu Ruixue came home from school. Wu Ruixue turned on the TV to watch cartoons, while Wu Ruiqing, the little otaku, went straight to his bedroom.
Not long after, Wu Ruiqing suddenly burst out of his room, shouting, "Where's my diary? Which bastard stole my diary..."
Seeing his cousin Wu Ruiqing storm into the living room, Kang Jianfei stopped writing and held up the notebook, asking, "Are you looking for this?"
"You... You actually read my diary, you crazy mainland kid!" Wu Ruiqing's face and neck turned red with anger. The diary contained many of his adolescent thoughts, such as his crush on a certain girl. If someone read it, he would be devastated.
Kang Jianfei, despite being called a fool, still maintained his cheerful demeanor. He wouldn't argue with a middle schooler. Besides, using someone else's diary to write a novel was a bit excessive...
Wu Ruiqing snatched the diary and started yelling at Kang Jianfei. The two aunts heard the commotion and rushed out to mediate.
Zhou Mingfang smiled apologetically at Kang Jianfei, "The child doesn't know any better, don't take it to heart."
Liang Ying didn't say anything nice to them but dragged her son Wu Ruiqing back to his bedroom by the ear, scolding him, "You're the crazy one. You never meet your exam standards, and as soon as you get home, you read novels instead of studying..."
"Mom... Ah, it hurts, be gentle..." Wu Ruiqing cried out in pain.
The commotion quickly subsided. Hu Juncai stood awkwardly to the side, feeling a bit embarrassed. After all, Wu Ruiqing had included him in his insults. Hu Juncai thought, "Sigh, I'll go to Lantau Island tomorrow. Staying here just invites more trouble."
Kang Jianfei didn't mind. Before he was transported, he had mostly lived as a guest, so this small conflict was nothing to him.
