Chapter 3 – Interacting With Enami-san
Volume 1
It was after I got home and finished cleaning up for dinner.
I had just gotten out of the bath and was sitting on the couch in the living room trying to cool down from the heat. I was watching the news on my phone when I suddenly received a notification on Line.
Risa Enami: What are you doing?
I was surprised when I saw the sender’s name. I had no idea it was Enami-san. Even though I had registered for it, I didn’t think she would send a message to me. My body, which had been leaning against the backrest, slumped forward.
I hurriedly responded to it.
Naoya Ookusu: I just got out of the bath and cooled off.
My body is still burning, and sweat is pouring down my face and arms. In a daze, I look at the screen of my phone.
The message was read immediately. A reply comes.
Risa Enami: I just got out of the bath too
A casual exchange. But when I think of it as a conversation with Enami-san, it feels really strange.
Wiping my wet head with a towel, I was wondering what I should say. It was so sudden, I didn’t know how to respond. I don’t exchange Line with many people in the first place, so I don’t know what a safe response would be.
While I was in a daze, I received another message from Enami-san.
Risa Enami: Are you sure you don’t need to study?
She seemed to be worried about me.
Naoya Ookusu: I’m about to.
It’s not like I can study as soon as I get home. I have to cook for my sister and father and clean up after dinner. Laundry is also my job. There are so many things I have to do.
Risa Enami: Is that so?
Naoya Ookusu: What about you, Enami-san?
I raised my head and looked out the window. It’s a garden that hasn’t been used since my mother died. In the past, there used to be several plants lined up. Now it’s just a bleak place with weeds growing out of it. I can hear the faint cry of a cricket.
My phone trembled slightly.
Risa Enami: I won’t tell.
Somehow, I thought that was typical of Enami.
Naoya Ookusu: You should study.
Risa Enami: Why?
Naoya Ookusu: Probably because it’s better.
Enami-san will be able to get good grades with a little study. I thought it would be a shame not to take advantage of her potential.
Risa Enami: Hmm.
Well, it’s none of my business.
Naoya Ookusu: Are you going to come for the midterm exams?
If I remember correctly, she was late during the test period, and the evaluation for what you couldn’t take must have been disastrous.
Risa Enami: I’m coming.
Still, I think it’s inevitable that Enami-san will be held back in school. She was far too late. In that sense, maybe there’s no need to take this test so seriously.
Naoya Ookusu: Then get a good score!
It wasn’t for the sake of the teacher. It’s simply that I’ve begun to take an interest in Risa Enami. I still haven’t gotten rid of my negative image of her, but I honestly hope that she can do at least a little bit better.
Risa Enami: What’s a good score?
Naoya Ookusu: At least avoid red marks!
Even though she’s become more serious, it’s only been two days at most. It might be difficult to make your grades skyrocket with such a quick fix.
Naoya Ookusu: Since I’ve taught you so well, you should at least do that!
Risa Enami: Well, I can try giving my best.
But she might at least be able to get out of the bottom grade. As far as I taught her today, there was no subject that she couldn’t do anything about. All subjects were universally weak, but none of them were that bad.
Enami Risa: Speaking of which, I heard that you’re always the top test ranker.
Naoya Ookusu: That’s right!
Since I started high school, I’ve never once given up the top spot. I may have been beaten by others in some subjects, but I always beat them in the overall score.
Naoya Ookusu: How did you know?
Until recently, you must not have been interested in me even a millimeter. I didn’t think you knew.
As I typed, I got a reply right away.
Risa Enami: I heard from Nishikawa recently. You’re surprisingly amazing.
Naoya Ookusu: I’m making that much of an effort.
Risa Enami: Now that’s a little gross.
Naoya Ookusu: Why is that!!
This is not good. I don’t know where to stop the conversation. If I don’t, it’s going to go on forever. I’ve decided to study for four hours a day. If I don’t start soon, it will be too late for me to go to bed.
Naoya Ookusu: I want to go study soon.
I felt apologetic, but I had no choice.
Risa Enami: Are you mad?
She must have thought I was trying to end the conversation because I heard the word “gross”.
Naoya Ookusu: No. I’m not mad at you.
Sayaka has been calling me “gross” every day. If I lost my temper every time she said it, my body wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Risa Enami: Right. Well, good luck with that.
I’ll just add one last text.
Naoya Ookusu: Ah!
The message was read, but there was no reply from Enami-san.
I put my phone to sleep and get up from the sofa.
I looked at my watch and saw that it was only about 8 pm. If I study from here, I’ll be able to go to bed by the time the day ends.
I need to get into the swing of things when I study at home.
I clapped my hands on my face and walked to my room.
TN : I’m still bored.. so one more.
