"Nothing much, I just wanted to explain that the man I mentioned this morning isn't because anything happened between us. I went out to find a woman, and she was just giving you a friendly reminder. Don't misunderstand anything."
As he typed these words, Xu Jianxing's hand couldn't help but tremble slightly. He then took a deep breath and pressed Enter.
When Lu Qian saw the message, her whole body stiffened. She felt a mix of bitterness and relief. She was relieved that the girl hadn't betrayed her, though the betrayal was hard to define, but that was how she felt. The bitterness came from Xu Jianxing's words, which suggested that he might not care about her as much as she thought. This made Lu Qian feel extremely uncomfortable, and she found it hard to accept.
Lu Qian closed her eyes in pain, shook her head, and then opened her sad eyes, slowly typing, "I understand."
She felt each word was as heavy as a mountain, heavier than ever before, and she had never felt so powerless. She also felt that the night was unusually lonely, pressing down on her, making it hard to breathe. Tears silently fell from her cheeks.
Xu Jianxing also felt uncomfortable. He sighed deeply and then typed, "Alright, you go ahead with your work. I'm logging off. Things will eventually pass. I wish your career will reach new heights in the future."
After sending the message, Xu Jianxing hesitated for a moment and then directly deleted "Wife" from his contacts. Since he wanted to forget, he decided to forget completely, without any lingering feelings. Then he logged out of the messaging app.
At the same time, Su Wan'er was slightly stunned, then she angrily shouted at Xu Jianxing, "Brother-in-law, don't you think this is too heartless?"
Xu Jianxing smiled bitterly and said, "Isn't this better for everyone? It avoids further entanglements. I believe that with time, everything will get better, and the memories will fade. I prefer simplicity, and besides, there's no future between us. Sometimes, one must face reality. Hesitation only leads to chaos."
"Hmph, I don't want to deal with you, you heartless guy. I'm going to see my sister." With that, Su Wan'er grabbed her small handbag and rushed out of the house.
Xu Jianxing shook his head with a bitter smile and returned to the bedroom. He lay down on the bed, numbly staring at the ceiling, not knowing what to think. After a while, feeling both physically and mentally exhausted, he fell asleep.
As for the magical pill, he didn't want to think about it anymore. Everything could wait until he woke up.
Twenty minutes passed.
Su Wan'er, who had rushed out of the house, hurried to Lu Qian's door. After asking the maid, she came to the study and knocked on the door twice.
A steady female voice came from inside the study, "Who is it?"
"It's me, sister," Su Wan'er said softly. Honestly, she felt deeply regretful. If she hadn't said anything, things wouldn't have gotten so bad. It would have been better to let things take their natural course.
"Oh, it's you, Wan'er. Why are you here at this hour? You must be tired after a day's work. Go back and rest if there's nothing."
Hearing this, Su Wan'er understood. She muttered to herself, "Sister must be in a very bad mood, and she might have even cried."
This made her feel even more guilty. She said firmly, "Sister, I'm not tired. If you're free, I'll come in."
"Wait, wait, I'll open the door in a moment."
As she spoke, Lu Qian ran to the bathroom, washed her face a few times, dried it, and checked the mirror before coming out.
She walked a few steps, opened the study door, and forced a smile, "Wan'er, what brings you here?"
"Sister, don't ask me what you already know. Can we stop playing these games?" Su Wan'er shook her head with a hint of a smile and walked into the study, sitting down on the sofa. Lu Qian sat silently across from her.
Looking at Lu Qian, Su Wan'er shook her head and said with a bitter smile, "Sister, what are you planning to do?"
Lu Qian wasn't stupid. She knew what Su Wan'er meant. She laughed bitterly, "What can I do? Eat when I'm hungry, drink when I'm thirsty."
Although Lu Qian was accommodating to Xu Jianxing in the game, her pride could never be completely erased. However, she found it hard to accept such a significant change.
"Don't you have any other thoughts?" Based on her understanding of Lu Qian, Su Wan'er didn't believe her sister was the type to let things go easily.
"He said what he said, what else can I think?" Lu Qian's voice was calm, but her tightly clenched hands and trembling body betrayed her.
Looking at Lu Qian, Su Wan'er sighed, "Sister, you know Brother-in-law is tough on the outside but soft on the inside. Sometimes he can be annoying, but he has a gentle side. In this matter, Brother-in-law was wrong, but weren't you wrong too?"
"Where was I wrong?" Lu Qian's voice rose, "Was I wrong for not finding him some girls to play with when he came?"
Su Wan'er shook her head with a bitter smile, "Sister, you can't say that. You know men sometimes have needs. Besides, you didn't even show up for two days after he arrived. What would a normal person think? I know you were conflicted, but since he came, you should have at least asked. Even for a regular friend, you should show some concern. But you kept everything to yourself and ignored Brother-in-law. How do you think he felt?"
Lu Qian sighed deeply. Although she found Su Wan'er's words reasonable, after such an event, she felt a bit disheartened. She wasn't an ordinary woman. Despite the many memories and attachments to this relationship, she couldn't bring herself to lower her guard and say anything in reality.
Moreover, she knew that reality was different from the game. In the game world, even an 80-year-old woman finding a 17- or 18-year-old boy wouldn't be noticed if they didn't say anything. But in the real world, such a thing would be shocking news.
Looking at Lu Qian, Su Wan'er didn't know what else to say. She now understood that their relationship was probably over, and all that was left was some memories.
The room fell silent.
After a long while, Lu Qian said, "Alright, Wan'er, let it go. Don't worry about me. I think I'll be fine after some time. Take care of the company for the next few days. I want to go out and clear my mind. I won't go far, just call me if anything happens."
"Alright, sister, don't overthink it. If there's nothing, get some rest early. I'll go back now," Su Wan'er said helplessly.
"Okay, be careful on your way. I won't see you out," Lu Qian stood up with a slight smile. As Su Wan'er opened the door and was about to leave, Lu Qian couldn't help but add, "No matter what, we were friends. If you can help, do so. If you need anything, let me know."
"Alright, I understand, sister," Su Wan'er shook her head with a bitter smile. She knew her sister still hadn't let go. However, she didn't want to get too involved in their relationship. She wasn't cut out to be a matchmaker.
Twenty minutes later.
Su Wan'er returned home and found no one in the living room. She walked to Xu Jianxing's room and heard a light snore. She muttered to herself, a bit annoyed, "This brother-in-law is just a pig, eating and sleeping without a care, or did he go out and fool around again?"
She thought carefully and felt it didn't quite fit. Based on her understanding of Xu Jianxing over the past year, she found it hard to believe he was the type to fool around every day. This made her wonder, "Did I misunderstand something about Brother-in-law? He always looks so tired. What is he really doing?"
Back in her room, Su Wan'er couldn't figure it out. Frustrated, she started playing a game...
