Chapter 110: Wish
Changyi slept for a very long time. After waking up, he looked at the black fox fire in front of him and realized what had happened.
He looked at Ji Yunhe.
She had been up all night and her eyes were red.
They stared at each other in silence. He did not explain why he suddenly passed out. This big-tailed fish was not capable of telling lies, and Ji Yunhe did not want to force him either.
She finally smiled and broke the silence, "It's almost dawn." She pretended to be calm and relaxed. "Big-tailed fish, time spent with you always go by so fast."
Changyi looked down, his long lashes covering his eyes. He gently took Ji Yunhe into his arms without saying anything.
They snuggled together under the fading moon.
Until the sun appeared over the horizon, pulling them back to reality.
Ji Yunhe left his arms and twirled a strand of his silver hair around her finger. "It's time for you to go back to the city," she said as she released his hair.
Changyi nodded and stood up. "I will go back and discuss with Kongming and the others regarding the situation here at the border. We should be able to come up with some solutions in a few days." He paused then added, "Stay safe."
He called for Qu Xiaoxing, but Ji Yunhe called out to him, "Changyi."
Changyi turned around, his silver hair reflecting the rising sun made him look as beautiful as a celestial god.
Ji Yunhe admired him for a while then smiled. "When this is over, let's get married."
Blue eyes widened slightly.
Qu Xiaoxing, who was running over, abruptly stopped in his tracks after hearing her words. His eyes darted back and forth between Ji Yunhe and Changyi.
The spring breeze blew past them.
"I..." Changyi hesitated a bit then said, "can't marry you yet." He lowered his eyes.
This answer was a bit unexpected. Qu Xiaoxing bit his thumb nervously and stared at Ji Yunhe. But she looked as calm as ever with no signs of someone who had just been rejected.
"You gave me your mark. According to the rules of jiaoren, it already counts as marriage."
Qu Xiaoxing looked at Changyi again.
Changyi now looked like he was the one who had been rejected. He stared at the ground with a frown for a long time, pondering and deep in thought. "It doesn't count according to the rules of humans."
"I'm not a human anymore."
"You're not a jiaoren either."
"But you are a jiaoren, you should abide by the rules of your people."
Ji Yunhe's responses were quick, and Changyi's brows tightened even more as he continued to think hard, apparently not having a good argument against her.
Q Xiaoxing felt a little sympathy for the jiaoren.
He knew all too well that a verbal battle against Ji Yunhe was more or less futile. Her brain was too quick and her mouth was too smart, dealing with a simple and direct fish was nothing to her.
"I... I still can't marry you."
Finally, the jiaoren did not bother giving reasons anymore, and just bluntly refused.
A flat out refusal, brutal but effective.
Ji Yunhe's artful tongue instantly became useless against his simple and direct approach.
The truth was all three of them knew very well why Changyi refused to marry Ji Yunhe. He did not know how much time he had left, so he did not want to delay her. But if he did not make it clear, the others would not either.
Ji Yunhe looked at him and he looked down, like a child who had done something wrong, waiting to be reprimanded.
"Then I'll ask you again next time."
And again after that. Changyi, you will have to agree eventually.
Changyi looked at Ji Yunhe, but she already turned around, waved her hand and walked away. "I have to rush to the next gate to lay down a foundation for the boundary there. I'm going."
The sunlight sprinkled down, casting a golden tint across Ji Yunhe's fading back.
"Your Highness?" Qu Xiaoxing waited until Ji Yunhe was no longer visible before asking. "Shall we go back?"
"I almost said yes." Changyi was still looking at the direction where she had left. "Almost..."
He lowered his head and looked at the frost covering his fingers, nearly sealing them. He curled them into a fist and the frost shattered, falling to the ground like snowflakes.
Changyi said, "Let's go."
...
"Ten days." Kongming gathered the silver needles back into his satchel.
Of course Changyi knew what he was talking about.
His body would completely freeze into ice in ten days.
The bit of temptation he had on the way back was immediately snuffed out.
Marriage, whether for a demon or a human, was a major life event. If not for these unexpected misfortunes, he would be preparing for it right now. He had marked Ji Yunhe, and kissed her...
Thinking about the few rare and precious moments, Changyi suddenly felt his increasingly cold body warm up a bit.
Looking at Changyi, Kongming did not sneer or tease him. He just casually asked, "What are you thinking about?"
"Ji Yunhe," Changyi said honestly.
"Think about her some more, it's good for your health," Kongming said. "Your face turned a little rosy just now."
Changyi cleared his throat. "Today, before coming back, Yunhe asked me to marry her."
Kongming stopped. "Right now?"
"She said after everything's over."
"You can't wait til then, do it now," Kongming said. "Setting up the boundary cannot stop, but we can get her to take half a day off and come back. Do it quickly and get it checked off of your bucket list." He paused then continued, "Time waits for no one. If you miss it now, you may never get another chance." What he said clearly showed regret over his own affairs.
Changyi was not good at comforting people, so he silently handed Kongming a cup of tea.
Kongmong refused the tea and looked at him. "You look like you don't want to get married?"
"I don't want to delay her."
"You two wasted so many years already, stop being so wishy-washy." Kongming got up and walked out. "If it were Ji Yunhe running out of time, would you marry her? Would you feel like she's delaying you?"
Changyi froze.
He stood up and was about to speak when Ji Yunhe stepped through the door pulled open by Kongming.
She said to the monk, "I knew you'd be a great help." Ji Yunhe patted him on the shoulder. "If you run into issues with Luo Jinsang in the future, I will help you talk to her."
Kongming threw her a glimpse. "I didn't do this for you." Then he went out the door and closed it behind him.
Ji Yunhe looked at the closed door with a smile, then turned to face Changyi.
"Big-tailed fish, I died once before, so I know the regret felt at the last moment. Don't blame me for using some tactics. I really don't want to keep wasting our time together," Ji Yunhe said. "I want to marry you not for a title, but for an identity. This identity might not be important now, because what is important to me right now is you. but Changyi..." She paused, her lips still a casual smile.
"In the days without you, this identity will be very important to me."
In the days without him, she would take on his surname and capture his presence into her life and soul.
"This is not delaying me," she said. "This is fulfilling a wish."
