Chapter 68: Snowfields Past
Ji Yunhe invited the two to sit down at a small tea table.
Qing Ji curiously observed the candles on her table, while Luo Jinsang's words poured out like rain.
She stroked Ji Yunhe's hand like a caring mother, and soon grew emotional again. She cried over her challenges and obstacles in coming to see Ji Yunhe.
"I've been trying to come see you ever since I found out you're locked up here..." Luo Jinsang sobbed a couple of times and turned her head toward the screen, whispering into Ji Yunhe's ear.
"I spent a lot of money bribing people, and tried brute force, but all were unsuccessful. Later, that baldy came and told me to stop wasting my efforts, and that you were about to die. I was so angry I beat him up and went to beg her..." Luo Jinsang rudely pointed at Qing Ji who was still playing with the candles. "She was also useless as hell! What Green Feather Rebellion?! Jade phoenix! No use at all!"
Qing Ji turned her head with amusement. "Little girl, you dare to criticize even me now?" Her face looked similar to Snow March, it made Ji Yunhe feel as if the three of them had reunited here. But upon a closer look, the charm between her eyebrows was something Snow March did not have.
Qing Ji continued, "Didn't you see me beg that fish the other day? But he's guarding her like his precious baby, refusing anyone from seeing her. What can I do?"
Ji Yunhe twitched the corners of her mouth and mumbled, "Precious…" Then her voice was drowned out by Luo Jinsang's angry rebuke.
"Beat him! This body of yours full of demonic power, what have you been doing with it?" Luo Jinsang said angrily. "Look at this precious baby, look! If he treasured her so much, how could she be so thin?" Luo Jinsang grabbed Ji Yunhe's arm and shook it in the air. "Look at this hand! Huh? And look at this face! And this hair! Who raises a baby like this?"
Ji Yunhe laughed and pulled Luo Jinsang's hand down. "I'm a prisoner, but you guys talk as if I've become a guest of honor."
Luo Jinsang looked at Ji Yunhe and said sincerely, "Yunhe, I'd never believe you could do something bad."
Ji Yunhe had never felt regret for what she did six years ago. It was what she had wanted to do, so she was willing to bear the consequences. She always thought she was extremely open-minded about it, but hearing Luo Jinsang's absolute trust in her right this minute, Ji Yunhe suddenly felt very moved.
She quickly glanced at the screen and lowered her eyes. "What's the point of just talking about me? What have you been doing over the years? Encounter any hardships? Learn any new skills?"
"I..." Luo Jinsang looked beyond the screen. "It's a long story..."
The maids in the room had finished cleaning and retreated as far as they could, and the person outside the screen spoke, "Enough. It's getting late, you guys should go."
Changyi told them to leave.
"Hey wait. Qing Ji, take a look at Yunhe," Luo Jinsang said. "Although you are not a doctor, you have lived for so many years. Maybe there's a way..."
As expected, Changyi went silent.
Qing Ji puckered her lips. "Then let's take a look." She held Ji Yunhe's pulse, then raised her eyebrows.
Luo Jinsang asked nervously, "Well?"
"How long did your Kongming say she would live?"
"About a month."
Qing Ji nodded. "In my opinion, there is only one way to save her."
Three pairs of eyes fell on Qing Ji in unison. Qing Ji stood up, looked around and her eyes fell on Luo Jinsang. Then in a flash, Qing Ji pulled out a dagger from Luo Jinsang's waist and pointed it straight at Ji Yunhe's throat.
Luo Jinsang cried out in alarm, "Hey! What!?"
Changyi immediately stepped to Ji Yunhe's side.
"With this body, death would be a relief," Qing Ji said.
Luo Jinsang shouted in anger, "I asked you to come save her, what's wrong with you?!"
"Get out," Changyi also scolded.
Only Ji Yunhe sat in the chair without concern, smiling and nodding, "Exactly."
Luo Jinsang was even more angry now. "Yunhe! What are you talking about? You have a month left!"
Changyi shifted his glare to Luo Jinsang. "You get out too!"
With a scolding, both of them were thrown out.
Ji Yunhe laughed alone in her chair. "That girl, there's always laughter wherever she is. I don't know how she and the jade phoenix were able to become friends..."
Changyi's stinking expression eased a bit after seeing her smiling face.
"Changyi, let them come visit me from now on, okay?"
He did not answer her. A moment later, he turned around and left.
Ji Yunhe thought he did not agree since he always ignored her requests. She was used to this and did not dwell on it.
Unexpectedly, a set of quiet footsteps rustled up from the stairs when dawn approached.
The door opened with a creak and then was carefully closed again, but no one walked through.
Then the floor creaked softly.
Changyi had just left not long ago, saying he needed to take care of some business outside. Ji Yunhe was settling into her bed when an invisible Luo Jinsang slowly revealed herself.
She flashed a bright smile and gave Ji Yunhe another hug. "Yunhe, are you surprised that I came to see you again?"
Ji Yunhe was indeed a little surprised. She raised an eyebrow and asked, "No one stopped you?"
"No one stopped me." Luo Jinsang laughed. "Who can see me?"
"Then how come you couldn't sneak in before?"
"Hrm..." Luo Jinsang scratched her head. "There was always a magic seal around the island, today it's gone."
Ji Yunhe felt warm and fuzzy inside, and smiled to herself. "So why are you here disturbing my sleep?"
Luo Jinsang took out a package. "See, back in the Demon Valley you told me to take this tea set. I've been keeping it for you this whole time."
Ji Yunhe looked down and past memories came flooding back. Although there was not much to reminisce about, she did feel a bit nostalgic.
She held the tea set and gently stroked it.
"Jinsang, thank you."
Luo Jinsang scratched her head and said, "It's just a tea set, no need to thank me. But keeping them safe was quite a challenge."
Ji Yunhe was amused. "Just a worthless tea set. Did someone try to smash it?"
"Yup!" Luo Jinsang said angrily. "That baldy, Kongming, was so awful! After leaving you six years ago, I carried this tea set and searched everywhere for him. After I found him, he not only had Qu Xiaoxing with him, he had also saved the jiaoren."
Thinking about the cliff under the moon that night and the sword, Ji Yunhe still felt a pinch inside her heart.
"The monk said he fished the jiaoren out of the river, and that he was dying with no will to live. He only squeezed out a few words saying he was…" Luo Jinsang paused, "was wounded by you... I certainly did not believe it, but that baldy believed everything. After the jiaoren got a little better, that baldy learned the details and was so angry he wanted to smash the tea set. He also accused me of being an accomplice to evil by keeping it with me!"
"Ha!" Luo Jinsang sneered. "This tea set did nothing wrong, he had no reason to smash it. Also, how could you be evil!?"
Ji Yunhe laughed while stroking a tea cup. "Right, what can smashing a tea set do. If I were the monk, I would have killed me by now."
"You're talking nonsense again!" Luo Jinsang said. "I helped you and explained to him. Before I left the Demon Valley, you told me to take the tea set and wait for you outside, and that Lin Haoqing was going to give you the position of the Valley Master, and that you were going to set the fish free when the time was right."
Ji Yunhe thought for a while. Oh, so that was what she told him.
"But the monk mocked me, saying your statement was strange as hell and didn't make any logical sense. He said you were so bad that you even lied to me."
Ji Yunhe touched her teacup. "And you? What did you say?"
"I yelled at him and left."
Ji Yunhe laughed and shook her head. "You yelled at him, but where could you go?"
"To find Snow March!" Luo Jinsang was still emotional as she remembered the incident. "At that time, I knew you were captured by the court for failing to escort the fish, and got locked up in the Grand Master's house. I was extremely anxious! So after the monk upsetted me, I grabbed my things and set off on my own." She patted the tea set in Ji Yunhe's hand. "To keep the monk from taking advantage of my absence and smashing your stuff, I gave them all to Qu Xiaoxing and told him to hide them well. You see, he did not fail his mission either."
"Qu Xiaoxing is also at the Demon Terrace, right?"
"Yep, he's been following the monk ever since six years ago. Now he even holds an official position in the Demon Terrace. He also wanted to come see you yesterday, but the fish only allowed me and Qing Ji in. I think it's because Qu Xiaoxing is a man."
"But Qu Xiaoxing is just a little boy."
"Six years have passed, the little boy's all grown up."
Ji Yunhe smiled and shook her head. "What happened? Did you find Snow March?"
"She had been taken away by Qing Ji, and I heard that Qing Ji appeared further north from the Northlands, so I went all the way north to the extreme north. But the north was so big, I got lost in the snowfields, and ended up in a really desperate situation..." Suddenly, Luo Jinsang's cheeks flushed red and she cleared her throat.
"Probably that's what people mean by heaven's will, the monk also appeared in the snowfields and he saved me."
Ji Yunhe smiled and teased, "Oh, a vast snowy plain, a man and a woman, in trouble together?"
"Yes, and then I accidentally slept with him."
Ji Yunhe's hand shook. A cup from the tea set that had been carefully kept for six years rolled onto the ground and exploded into pieces. Ji Yunhe's mouth was wide open but she could not spit out a single word.
Luo Jinsang, on the contrary, got on the floor with a heart full of pain. "Aiye aiye aiye! The cup, the cup, the cup!"
Ji Yunhe carelessly shoved the other cups onto the bed and pulled Luo Jinsang up. "What did you do with him?"
"Slept with him."
"Then you and him now..."
"Still the same as before."
"Huh!?" Ji Yunhe now felt like she could not die yet. She should go get that scum of a monk, hold him down and ask him if he should die first...
"Aiya, the snowfields were super cold, I borrowed his body to keep warm, shouldn't be too much of a sin..."
Well... putting it that way… seemed it might have been Luo Jinsang taking advantage of him…
