Chapter 1: If a Chaebol Has Regressed, What Can't He Do?

6 min read1,485 words

The反击 of the Chaebol family's playboy has been converted to a paid release.

August 1971, inside a military transport ship heading to Vietnam.

When I opened my eyes again, I, Seo Jin Shin, the chairman of Shin Sung Group, found myself in an unfamiliar space.

The people around me were all soldiers in military uniforms, all wearing the White Tiger Unit insignia.

'Just like!'

The situation was exactly the same as when I was dragged into the Vietnam War in my youth.

'Why is this happening to me?'

At that moment, the door to the cabin opened, and a sergeant came in.

'I am Seo Jin Shin, the chairman of Shin Sung Group?'

Why am I here?

"Men, we're almost in Vietnam. Good luck."

Vietnam? Is this a dream?

However, the sense of reality I felt through my skin made it seem like it wasn't a dream.

'I've come back to hell.'

* * *

October 3, 1971.

Near the 14th Route in Phuoc Long Province, Vietnam, at the base of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the White Tiger Unit.

I thought it was a nightmare, but surprisingly, it was reality.

I had returned in time, not as Seo Jin Shin, the chairman of Shin Sung Group, but as Private Seong Su Lee.

At first, I thought I had regressed to my younger days, but it turned out to be a different young man named Seong Su Lee.

This seems more like possession than regression.

'And what's strange is...'

It's surprising enough that my soul has transmigrated into another body and time, but I can see something strange in my vision, appearing semi-transparently.

'And...'

When I look in the mirror, I can see information about myself.

-Age: 20

-Occupation: Army Private

-Abilities: Can see spiritual beings and others' backgrounds and futures.

-Current Coordinates: X: 126.9821581, Y: 37.5525564

When I first saw this semi-transparent text, it said "Army Private First Class" under occupation.

After becoming a private, the semi-transparent text changed immediately.

'What's certain is!'

I'm back in the hell of the Vietnam War.

"Ah, damn! Squad, assemble!"

The squad leader, who had just returned from a battalion operation meeting, shouted in frustration.

The squad members frowned as if the inevitable had arrived.

"Hey, Seong Su."

The squad leader called me.

I immediately ran to him with American cigarettes I had obtained and saw that when I looked at him, semi-transparent information appeared above Squad Leader Chang Chil-Soo's head.

-Age: 27

-Occupation: Army Sergeant

-Abilities: Excellent combat sense and tenacious survival skills.

-Current Coordinates: X: 128.9821581, Y: 36.5525564

-Notable: None

"Here I am."

I'm just a cigarette shuttle.

Since these are American cigarettes, not the standard issue Korean cigarettes, I don't get complaints from the squad leader.

The real troublemaker is Private Myung Bok Kim, who joined the squad after me, and I can't understand why he came to the war zone.

I recalled when I first transferred to this squad.

A significant number of American soldiers were illiterate.

'They can't read or write their own language.'

This is unthinkable for Koreans, but it's quite common in other countries.

That's why Koreans should be grateful to King Sejong.

Anyway, in a war zone, I need to use my abilities to the fullest. Since I had regressed, I had to start everything over.

So, I pondered and pondered how to gather investment funds even in this war zone.

I can speak Vietnamese because Shin Sung Group established and operated a mobile phone factory in Vietnam, and as the chairman, I studied Vietnamese and became fluent in just one year, which is now very helpful.

When I said this, Chang Chil-Soo's eyes widened.

So, with the squad leader's tacit approval, I became actively involved in the love lives of American soldiers.

I remember when Private Charlie showed me a letter.

I became quite necessary to the American soldiers, especially when writing letters to their girlfriends back home in English.

Also, when American soldiers dating Vietnamese women needed someone to read or write letters to their Vietnamese girlfriends, I was needed.

The letters mostly contained love stories, but when Vietnamese women told American soldiers or dazed Korean officers that they loved them, their pockets would get fuller.

"Today, our squad has a group leave."

When the squad leader said this, I snapped out of my reverie.

Group leave should be something everyone looks forward to, but both the squad leader and the squad members looked like they had eaten something foul.

"Is the next reconnaissance mission for our squad?"

The section leader slightly frowned and asked the squad leader.

"That damn bastard picked me. Hey, new guy~"

The squad leader called Private Myung Bok Kim.

"Yes, Squad Leader."

"Do you know that Kong Kai has big, soft breasts?"

In a war zone and as soldiers, lewd talk is a daily occurrence.

"Does he know that, hahaha!"

"Enough, everyone prepare for the leave. Even if we die tomorrow, let's live it up today."

"Yes, Squad Leader."

So, our squad went on leave to a nearby city.

After a wild night with Vietnamese girls, we returned and were immediately deployed for reconnaissance on the 14th Route.

* * *

A Vietnamese civilian village in the jungle near the 14th Route exit.

'On the way here...'

There were no Viet Cong marked in red on the semi-transparent map I could see.

Red means enemy.

If there were, we would have engaged in combat.

And that combat could have wiped out our squad.

Just the appearance of South Korean soldiers in their village is enough to make the Vietnamese villagers tremble.

"Set up a perimeter."

The squad leader was excellent in combat skills.

So, he must have survived this hell from private to sergeant.

'Fortunately, in the village and surroundings!'

There are no Viet Cong or North Vietnamese regulars marked in red.

'Based on me!'

The observation range of the semi-transparent map is 100 meters.

"Yes, understood."

The squad leader and section leader really work well together.

"And since the Viet Cong might be hiding, search every house."

The Viet Cong often disguise themselves as Vietnamese civilians.

"Hey, Myung Bok Kim."

Every army has at least one troublemaker.

"Private Myung Bok Kim!"

The squad leader called the troublemaker, Myung Bok Kim, who tripped over a rock while running to him and accidentally pulled the trigger.

Bang!

"You son of a bitch!"

The gunshot rang out.

The squad leader glared at the fallen troublemaker, Private Myung Bok Kim, and shouted.

"I'll correct it."

"Are you not going to pull yourself together?!"

Thud!

Squad Leader Chang Chil-Soo jabbed Private Myung Bok Kim's chest with the butt of his M-16.

"Ugh, I'm sorry."

"Pull yourself together, kid. Do you know what a misfire is?"

Fortunately, no one was hit by the misfire.

'But the gunshot rang out?'

The Viet Cong might have heard it from a distance beyond the range of the semi-transparent map.

* * *

In the jungle.

Bang!

A gunshot echoed from a distance, and the North Vietnamese regulars moving through the jungle heard it.

"Which direction?"

The North Vietnamese regulars' squad leader frowned and asked.

"From Village 15."

"Didn't they say the South Koreans were going to recon the route?"

Surprisingly, the North Vietnamese regulars knew about the South Koreans' reconnaissance plan in advance.

This means that some of the South Vietnamese soldiers assigned to the White Tiger Unit were Viet Cong, which is why South Vietnam, despite receiving full support from the U.S., ultimately fell.

"Yes."

"Let's go."

One gunshot led the North Vietnamese regulars to move toward Seong Su Lee's squad. And they were not Viet Cong but well-trained North Vietnamese regulars.

* * *

Inside a house in the Vietnamese village.

Following Squad Leader Chang Chil-Soo's orders, I was searching a Vietnamese house.

'On the map.'

Three black dots are marked.

Civilians are marked in white.

Allies in blue.

Enemies in red.

Civilians in white.

It must be children.

Parents in any country would try to save their children even if they themselves are in danger.

'Sure enough, in Vietnam.'

They had dug a secret space under the floor.

Clank, clank!

At that moment, I heard a clanking sound under my feet.

The children hiding there were trembling.

'This isn't right!'

I carefully found the lid to the secret space and opened it. As I expected, a girl and a younger boy were hiding inside.

When the lid opened, they smiled, thinking it was their parents, but their eyes widened in fear when they saw me.

'If they were red?'

It would mean Viet Cong.

I would have immediately thrown a grenade.

But the beings hiding inside were just scared kids!

"Be quiet, okay?"

I spoke in a low voice, in Vietnamese, and gave the child an American chocolate bar from my pocket, smiled, and closed the lid.
