Please look forward to it.
Sophia, the maid, holding a large bag, came to say her final goodbyes to the dilapidated cottage where Eleana lived, around mid-morning.
She was the only maid serving Eleana, the daughter of the Earl of Barley, but she had been fired that morning.
"I am truly sorry to leave you, Miss."
Sniff, sniff, wiping her large tears with the sleeve of her blouse, Sophia apologized, and Eleana, with a troubled expression, offered her a handkerchief.
"Oh, Sophia! You have nothing to apologize for. Rather, it's my fault you were fired. I'm sorry. If I were a normal young lady, you wouldn't have had to go through such hardships."
Today is Eleana's thirteenth birthday. To fire the maid who had been by her side on such a joyous day is clearly a form of harassment.
Usually, the butler Harris would have stopped it, but unfortunately, he had retired three months ago due to a bad back and his advanced age. The current butler, Rassen, is on the stepmother's side, leaving Eleana with no recourse.
"Sniff, sniff, don't worry about me. I'm more concerned about you, Miss. From tomorrow, there will be no one to take care of you."
"Oh, it'll be fine. I can manage on my own."
"Really?"
When Eleana answered bravely, Sophia gave her a dubious look.
"Really, really."
"You've always been a bit absent-minded, Miss."
"Have I?"
"Yes, you have."
Sophia fished out a note with an address from her pocket and pressed it into Eleana's hand.
"This is our address. If anything happens, please come to us. Understand? You must, okay?"
"I understand."
Eleana took the note and put it in her pouch to keep it safe.
"And this."
Sophia handed Eleana an umbrella she had been holding under her arm. It was a white lace parasol.
"It's a birthday present. If you like it."
"Thank you. I'll take good care of it."
Eleana thought she was kind. She had been concerned about the old, faded umbrella Eleana had. Despite being the daughter of a poor baron and having no money to spare, she still gave this beautiful parasol as a gift and told her to come if she needed help.
"Sophia, thank you so much for everything. I wish you happiness."
Eleana forced a smile, trying not to cry, and bid farewell to the maid, who was still sobbing. Sophia bowed repeatedly and left.
The door closed with a click, and silence returned. Looking around the simple room with just a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe, it felt a bit larger than usual.
The old, drafty cottage had always been kept clean, and she had been able to sleep on freshly washed sheets thanks to Sophia, who had taken on the duties of a housemaid.
Eleana had never gone hungry because Sophia had sneaked food from the kitchen for her. It wasn't just that.
"As the heir of the earl's family, you must acquire the proper education and manners. When your father returns, you might attend a school in the capital. Please bear with me until then."
She had taught Eleana not only academics but also manners and how to behave as a lady, doing everything she could.
Eleana was filled with gratitude.
"Sophia is gone, isn't she?"
Liam, a talking gecko, appeared. He had been with Eleana since before she could remember.
He claimed, "I'm not a gecko. I'm your guardian spirit," but to Eleana, he looked like a gecko.
"Yes, she's gone. From tomorrow, I'll be alone."
Eleana couldn't help but hug the white parasol tightly. Seeing this, Liam transformed into a boy with chestnut hair and eyes and stood beside her.
"You're not alone. I'll always be with you, no matter what."
"Yes, Liam is my guardian spirit."
"N-no! I'm not a guardian spirit, I'm a guardian spirit beast, a messenger of the Dragon God."
Ignoring Liam's exasperation, Eleana handed him the white parasol. Liam blew on it and cast a spell, then returned it to Eleana, saying, "There, it's good now!"
"Thank you, Liam."
Eleana is an ultimate rain-bringer.
Whenever she goes outside, it rains, so she can't do without this enchanted parasol.
If she tries to go to town, it rains. If she admires the flowers in the backyard, it rains. Whenever Eleana goes outside, it rains, no matter what.
At a garden party hosted by the queen for the children of the nobility, it started pouring as soon as she arrived, and the event was canceled.
"It was my mistake to invite someone blessed by the Dragon God."
The queen sighed, and since then, Eleana has not been invited to such events.
But as long as she has this parasol, she can walk under a clear sky.
The Barley family is blessed by the Dragon God with the power of "rain."
There are three families in the country that possess such blessings.
Besides the Barley family, there is the royal family, blessed by the goddess with "fertility," and the Halford family, blessed by the sun god with "sunny weather."
The blessing is passed down to only one of the blessed children, regardless of gender, and the one who manifests the blessing becomes the heir.
Incidentally, the queen was the third princess before her ascension, and when Eleana's mother was alive, she was the head of the Barley family.
While the royal family demonstrates its authority with the "fertility" blessing, the other two families' blessings are not publicly known. The rumors are vague, and they are recognized as mysterious entities.
Among the blessed, the royal family's "fertility" is revered by all, "sunny weather" is less noticeable, and unfortunately, "rain" is often shunned.
After all, tea parties, picnics, and trips, which children look forward to, are always ruined by rain.
"Whenever Eleana is around, it always rains!"
People started saying this, and by the time she was seven, she had been ostracized from society.
Eleana felt it was unfair that the "sunny weather" blessing existed for such occasions, but the power of the "rain" blessing was just too strong.
When Eleana's mother was alive, the power was not so overwhelming in daily life, and she was just a normal rain-bringer who could make it drizzle at important events like weddings and ceremonies, so she was able to adapt to society.
"When Eleana goes outside, the dragons rejoice and make a fuss. And only the strongest blessed, like you, can see a guardian spirit beast like me. You are loved by the Dragon God. It's something to be proud of."
Liam explained proudly, but Eleana still wanted to walk outside on a sunny day without the enchanted parasol.
