Chapter 4

“Are you sure you really want to go in?” Walking and probing secretly through the dark cinema hallway, Wei Cai asked Li Jia De who is behind him with a wry smile.

“We’ve already bought the tickets. What are we going to do with these if we didn’t use them?” Li Jia De seemed to feel strange about Wei Cai’s question.

He easily pulled him inside.

But Li Jia De immediately understood why Wei Cai said that—— the movie hall has not much people, yet the few dozens of people inside are all sweet and happy snuggling couples. Seeing the two men coming in together, all of their eyes are wide open, watching them with a strange look.

Two adult men watching a movie together is indeed a bit silly—— Wei Cai laughed bitterly in his heart——especially going together to watch such literary film is even more weird.

Originally the plan was to watch a blockbuster movie. But when they reached the cinema, they found out that they have to wait for the next showtime. In desperation, they bought the admission tickets but who would have known that this situation will be so embarrassing.

However, Li Jia De did not mind a bit and he was also quite happy. He tilted his head, smiled and asked Wei Cai, “How many movies have you treated me till now?”

He counted in his heart for a while and said “It seems to be the seventh movie. You still owe me three more. Don’t forget it.”

Wei Cai revealed a helpless smile, “To have you, Lawyer Li, keeping an eye, who can deny it?”

Yang Dong Lai was finally sentenced an indefinite period, rather than what he had said; a death penalty. Thus, Li Jia De naturally put on a creditor’s face, always staring behind his back clamouring to treat him every week.

Wei Cai knew his self-character a bit unsociable. He honestly cannot understand why a person who has a wide circle of friends like Li Jia De like to stick with people who are nothing special, spending precious rest days with him.

Not like those men of same age accompanying their girlfriends.

“What happened?” Eyes full of concern.

Wei Cai quickly shook his head, “Nothing.” If Li Jia De found out that Wei Cai was thinking about such strange matters, Li Jia De will surely laugh to death. After several months of interactions, he considered as being able to understand the promising spots of Li Jia De’s character——

Maybe it is family reasons. Although Li Jia De is a lawyer, he is not the general kind of selfish and cold people in this industry.

After finished watching the movie, Li Jia De cut to the chase and suggested to Wei Cai, “Let’s go to the Jade Garden to eat.” —— After watching the movie then went to eat; this still-a-bit-weird routine had become their weekend agendas so Wei Cai didn’t considered much and agreed.

They arrived at the Jade Garden and found a secluded spot to sit. Li Jia De ordered some dishes while having a casual chat with Wei Cai—— different topics which let Wei Cai almost spurted out the food while laughing.

Both of them chattered until the topic of the movie they watched today came up. Li Jia De suddenly said “Cai Cai, if you were that today’s male lead, will you be the same like him; because of love, don’t care about anything else?”

The original movie they've seen today has a bit strange title—— a forty-year-old man, has high position, but fell in love with his son’s finance. He was burned by the hot flames of love for this women that he gave up on his career, family, and even killed his own son. In the end, the woman was using him from the start. At the movie ending, the man died in despair—— a brutal love story.

Wei Cai, being asked this question, hesitated, startled for a while then shook his head “Should not be like that ba.”

“But if you really loved her?” Li Jia De refused to give up and continued to ask.

“Really really love ah?” Wei Cai was a little shillyshally jabbing the steak in front.

Putting down the fork, his voice has gotten more solemn: “Can’t help it. Those in our profession, because had seen too much of the reversal between fate of the day—— who dares to believe in love?”

Suddenly with a little sentiment, he said “Do you remember—— during Yang Dong Lai’s sentence, his wife didn’t come. I heard they’re getting a divorce.”

He laughed bitterly, “At his annual meeting prior to his arrest, I saw his wife was lovey-dovey towards him. He’s also in high and vigorous spirit—— But you look at the sentencing, his hair was all white——still just over forty years old…….”

“Love——” He shook his head, not continuing.

“But you can’t deny that there are really people who will do anything for love—— as long as you love, you would do anything.”

Due to the little girl tone Li Jia De had used, Wei Cai said “Yes ah. As long as there is love, anything is possible—— I also like to murder, have ten wives——”

Wei Cai exposed a wry smile for his ironic tone. He returned to his positive tone and said “If that’s really the case, I think you and I will have lose our jobs——

A murderer can say he likes to kill. A rapist can also say he likes that woman. Also, there is limit to not being prejudice to others. After all, people are living in reality ah”

The atmosphere suddenly cooled down. Stunned for a while due to remarks he said, Li Jia De forced a laugh “Well, you’re quite realistic—— it seems that counting on you to do anything for love is unlikely.”

Wei Cai was puzzled by Li Jia De grief-stricken look as if he had lost his parents,laughed: “These days—— Who cannot be without who…… I'm afraid even if I dig out the heart and liver, others will feel it’s too dirty. Who will need me so desperately ah——”

Li Jia De moved his mouth. He seemed to want to say something but in the end, he swallowed it in and did not said it.

He felt today’s atmosphere is a bit strange… Wei Cai secretly grimaced to himself.He started to eat the food in front of him.

Even with something like this; often have small disputes in some small issues, the two friends’ relationship still have a stable development—— In a blink of an eye, the annual vacation in May is almost here.

“During the holiday, where do you want to go and play ah?” The telephone passed Li Jia De’s elated voice.

Wei Cai thought for a while and said “I’ve to work overtime on the 3rd so I can’t go to faraway places—— I’ve heard there are fireworks on the 1st night. I want to see them”

“Fireworks ah—— It looks like my house can see them quite clearly. Why don’t we find a place in the afternoon on the 1st to play and at night, we eat dinner at my house and see the fireworks?” Li Jia De suggested on the other end of the line.

“To your house ah?” Wei Cai suddenly realized the two of them are already friends for a period of time and he hadn’t gone to Li Jia De’s house yet, could not help to have a little interest, “Okay.”

“Then I’ll come pick you up on the 1st in the afternoon.”

Settling the holiday arrangements, Wei Cai felt his mood suddenly getting better—— a bit hoping for the 1st of May to arrive soon.

Heading out from the beach, Wei Cai got onto Li Jia De’s car—— on a festive day, all sorts of entertainment centers are full.

They finally chose to go to the sauna—— After washing, there is this kind of physically and psychologically relaxing feeling.

“The moon is round today ah——” Looking out through the transparent roof of the place, the blue sky had a round and bright-colored moon. The scenery was very beautiful and fascinating.

The car zoomed across the elevated track. Within a second, Li Jia De’s apartment building was seen located near the Bund.1

Although there had been psychological preparations, when Wei Cai stepped into Li Jia De’s top floor penthouse apartment, he still sighed at this luxury.

“You are such a big profiteer, is it Tong Zhan Party?”

“Hey——” Taking out the champagne from the ice bucket, Li Jia De heard him and quickly protested “You, not only don’t praise my design and for having good taste, but to actually say I’m a profiteer—— You’re too much!”

Sitting on the leather chair, Wei Cai suspiciously looked at Li Jia De, “Aren’t you a profiteer to earn this house?”

Unlike Li Jia De, he obviously started working earlier yet he is still staying in the dormitory.

Suddenly, cheers and sound of bursting fireworks in the sky rang out.

Wei Cai was scared senseless. Being aware that his lips were moist, he just stared at Li Jia De; totally unaware of how to react.

Unexpectedly to have such a courage—— he did not realize at his age and identity…… what does this really mean?

Feeling so chaotic in his heart, Wei Cai just stood there blankly, fireworks reflected on his face——awe and sadness.

“I love you.” Clearly and concisely expressing his feelings, Li Jia De looked into Wei Cai’s eyes, apparently waiting for his answer.

“Can’t we just be friends?” After quite a while, Wei Cai forced out a reply.

The ardour did not fade in Li Jia De’s eyes, “But I like you… love you… really… I cannot lie to myself anymore.”

Holding Wei Cai in his embrace, his voice was full of beautiful expectations, “We’re so happy together…… we get along with each other so well… if we’re really a couple, we’ll be very happy.”

Yet Wei Cai did not respond to him. He broke away with force, backed away a few steps, his voice is also flustered, “No, no…… can’t. You must be confused—— we’re both men—— what together——we’ll be someone else’s laughing joke…… What together! What a joke……Joke……”

He staggered as he climbed down the stairs. Quickly walking towards the door, he looked back at Li Jia De who was at loss, “I still have something on…you…you think carefully again——come find me when you have it figured out——”

Opening the door, he suddenly thought of something. He looked back at Li Jia De and said “If you still insist, then don’t bother to come.” Having finished saying those, he left in panic.

Even though he was prepared, Li Jia De still felt depressed to death. He sat down at the table, his distressed face in his hands—— he could feel Wei Cai has feelings for him, but his deep-rooted moral values would not allow him to accept his feelings—— Li Jia De had wanted to bet that he is more important than those things……

Running staggeringly on the riverbank, Wei Cai’s heart was in a chaotic mess.

Not that he didn’t know—— but his longing for the happiness of both of them being together caused him to stay attached and refusing to leave——in the end, resulted in out-of-control situation like this.

Will not be allowed —— will not be allowed——

His prospect, future, career, family—— if he accepts, it means there will be incoming destruction.

Not that he had never seen before….

In the Authorities, also have such abnormal love which brought to light by rumours——that person was initially treated as a youngster who is cultured to be the future director but was kicked out of the prominent position, unexpectedly transferred to a lower position in such a baffled place.

The lovers could not bear the pressure and casually looked for women to marry. Later after his resignation, he disappeared—— this is the fate of the so-called taboo love……

Cannot be me. I will not allow it to be me.

He himself is no longer at the age desperate for love anymore—— having seen too many feelings burned after bad precedents, Wei Cai did not dare to talk about sacrificing for love, this kind of child talk anymore.

Feelings are an extravagant thing…… admitting that he cannot afford to have the burden of his love not being recognized by the community, Wei Cai secretly made up his mind——

They cannot meet again.
