Chapter 1

The water from the bathroom faucet gushed, Mu Yang leaned on the edge of the sink, took a deep breath, and then suddenly cupped a handful of water, splashing it on his face.

He needed to clear his head and calm down. No matter how bizarre the situation, he had to remain calm to avoid making mistakes due to panic.

Bizarre.

Indeed, it was bizarre.

He seemed to have encountered a supernatural event, just like in novels, where he met some system that could transport him to different dimensions?

This morning, when he woke up, Mu Yang found himself in the wilderness for no apparent reason, and his mind contained some additional information.

"Traveled to the first world, do you accept the mission?"

Mu Yang was terrified at the time. He hadn't washed his face or brushed his teeth, and he was only wearing a pair of floral pajama shorts when he suddenly appeared in this unfamiliar place, which made him feel utterly terrified.

What kind of place was this? He was standing on a dirt road in the countryside, surrounded by green crops. Although Mu Yang had grown up in the capital and had never done farm work, he could recognize the crops as sorghum, just like in the film "Red Sorghum," vast fields of sorghum.

The timing was clearly wrong. Sorghum usually matures in September or October, and the crops in the field were almost ripe, but he knew it was April 5th, a Saturday, and he was resting at home.

"Where am I? Why did I end up here? Am I sick, or did I travel through time? I want to go back." Mu Yang opened his eyes wide, looking around, his mind somewhat numb, muttering unconsciously.

However, as soon as he said, "I want to go back," Mu Yang's body reappeared in his bathroom, still standing next to the toilet where he had been.

Well, he was about to do his business, and his private parts were still exposed. Fortunately, no one saw him; otherwise, he would have jumped into the toilet in shame and died of embarrassment.

Mu Yang's mind hadn't caught up yet. He could feel that what just happened wasn't an illusion; it was too real.

But now he was back home, in the same spot. Could he have been half-asleep? It was possible. It was only 6:30, and it was just getting light. He had woken up too early. He could go back to bed and sleep some more since it was his day off.

When he lifted his leg to walk to the sink, he suddenly noticed many muddy footprints on the floor. How could his slippers be so dirty? What had he stepped on?

That didn't make sense. He never wore these slippers outside; he only used them at home. How could they be so dirty? The mud was clearly fresh, and there were no such dirty footprints on the floor from his bedroom to the bathroom.

He suddenly realized that what had just happened wasn't a daze. Had he really traveled through time? He shivered and then completely woke up.

His mind began to wander. If he had traveled through time, it was a rare opportunity. If he could seize it, what could he achieve? Yes, he definitely could. But if it was a dangerous world, and he was killed instantly, that would be too tragic.

He leaned over the sink, cupped a handful of water, and splashed it on his face, using the coolness to clear his head and calm down.

Mu Yang looked at himself in the mirror and said, "I just went there. It wasn't long, but I can confirm a few things. First, that place has air and plants, so it should be a habitable planet. Second, the place I went to was a dirt road in the countryside, with fields of sorghum, so it's most likely Earth. Third, it was relatively secluded, and I didn't see anyone nearby."

Well, the calmer Mu Yang was, the more logically he analyzed the situation.

Mu Yang stared at his eyes in the mirror and said, "For now, it doesn't seem too dangerous. Mu Yang, you're 21, a man. You can't let a little fear stop you. Go ahead, young man, I believe in you."

This guy was doing some self-hypnosis.

He suddenly remembered that there seemed to be a voice in his mind earlier, but he was too nervous to notice it. Now, he recalled the information in his mind.

Indeed, it was a clear message in his mind, and it was distinct and clear, with no ambiguity. The content was, "Traveled to the first world, do you accept the mission?"

"First world?"

"Mission?"

"It's not some kind of supreme being, is it? That would be too scary." Mu Yang felt a chill.

"Is the supreme being here?" No response.

"System spirit?"

"System?" Still no response.

Mu Yang scratched his head, "Maybe it's not like that. Is it some kind of system panel?"

As soon as he said this, a clear image appeared in his mind, a system panel that looked grand but was very simple.

The first section was the "Mission Announcement Panel," which contained only one line: "Traveled to the first world, do you accept the mission?" There was nothing else.

The second section was the "System Reward Panel," which was currently blank.

The third section was the "System Explanation Panel," which had some content. Mu Yang quickly checked it.

"System Explanation: This system can travel between dimensions. Completing tasks will earn system rewards."

Mu Yang was a bit disappointed. This was too simple. Other systems usually had a system spirit that could communicate, even be cute, or trick the host and create some conflict. Why was his system so simple?

It didn't explain anything. Did he need to accept the mission to get detailed information? He looked at the mission acceptance option in the first section, hesitated for a long time, but didn't click it.

"Mu Yang, are you afraid?" Mu Yang asked himself in the mirror.

"Why would I be afraid? If I accept the mission and get transported immediately, I need to prepare. Look, I'm only wearing a pair of floral pajama shorts. Is that suitable for a mission? I need to clean up, put on some clothes, and prepare some necessary equipment." He continued to answer himself in the mirror.

As a college student, he wasn't naive. He knew that danger often came with opportunity, but he needed to prepare before taking action. Impulsiveness could lead to danger.

He was a decisive person. Before doing anything, he decided to urinate first, as he felt uncomfortable.

He washed his face, brushed his teeth, and picked out a set of gray outdoor clothing and sports shoes. He found a backpack, put two bottles of water and two bags of bread from the fridge into it. He did everything slowly, mainly to calm his mind and give himself time to think.

"What exactly is this system, and how did it end up in my mind? I don't remember encountering anything strange. I wasn't struck by lightning, didn't play on the computer, and didn't encounter any alien technology. What's going on?" Mu Yang asked himself.

Forget it, he decided. He would figure it out later. Since it appeared in his mind, there must be a reason. Maybe the answer would come to him eventually. There was no need to worry now. After all, in the novels of this era, all the ways to obtain supernatural systems had been used, so he didn't need to delve into the process.

He continued to prepare. He went to the inner room, opened the drawer in the large wardrobe, and took out a sheathed dagger. This was Mu Yang's treasure, a genuine American Buck 650 Plain Edge Night Hawk. The black blade was simple but the sharp lines revealed its formidable cutting power.

This knife was a genuine American original, not from Hong Kong or Southeast Asia. It cost him 1000 yuan and was a tool he prepared for outdoor activities. However, it was a controlled weapon, so he kept it locked in the cabinet.

After preparing everything, he made himself a breakfast of three boiled eggs and a cup of hot milk, and a plate of fried rice made with leftover rice from yesterday. He ate this mismatched breakfast to satisfy his hunger.

With everything ready, he took a deep breath, opened the system interface in his mind, and clicked to accept the mission.

Instantly, a message appeared in his mind: "Mission 1: Kill a Japanese soldier."

Mu Yang found himself still at home, with no changes. He wasn't transported to any other dimension, so it seemed he didn't have a supreme being.

He checked the interface. The first section, the mission panel, now had two lines: "First world activated" and "Mission 1: Kill a Japanese soldier."

Mu Yang realized that this system was indeed simple to the point of being speechless.

He clicked on the second section, the reward panel, which was still empty.

The third section, the explanation panel, didn't disappoint him too much. It provided a few lines of explanation: "Transport to the first dimension, complete the system task, kill one Japanese soldier, and receive a system reward. The system reward can be selected from the reward panel."

Well, in most novels, the system is the boss, and he accepted his fate. He tightened his clothes, adjusted his backpack, and silently said, "Go," and disappeared from the room.
