Aren’t you coming down?

Yu Qingluo shivered, her eyebrows moved slightly as she gave out a smile: “Oh, did his previous wife die?”

“Are you still pretending not to know?” Ye Xiudu strongly squeezed her waist, his mood was extremely low: “Since Yu Zuolin is your enemy, then don’t you know about the skeletons in his closet?”

Yu Qingluo lifted her face to look at the sky, then continued to pay attention to the dissipating noise in the courtyard. However, inwards she kept on complaining. ‘Why did Ye Xiudu know about Yu Zuolin’s problems? How did he know that Yu Zuolin’s wife died? How does he know that his wife’s surname (TL/N: from the maiden’s clan) is Yu?

How come he knows about such information so clearly even though he’s staying in this place in the middle of nowhere[1]? Isn’t that just… No. it looks like this bastard was in the Capital six years ago, otherwise, she wouldn’t have gotten his Jade pendant on her.

A blunder, she made a big blunder. She shouldn’t have let him see Yu Zuolin, but now she was going to dig her own grave.

“I heard that Yu Zuolin’s wife held inappropriate conduct, she had an affair because she couldn’t stand her loneliness and even got pregnant from this affair.” Ye Xiudu’s faint voice sounded once again by her ear: “The Yu Household originally wanted to sentence her to drown, but they didn’t expect that woman to be so venomous to the point that she set fire to a firewood shed they were in, aiming to injure the Old Madame Yu. Fortunately, thanks to Yu Zuolin’s wholehearted care, the old Madame slowly recovered. Nevertheless, the heavens have eyes (TL: justice reinforced by the heavens) and, some months after Yu Shi escaped, she finally was also abandoned by the person she had an affair with. Unable to bear the piling exhaustion, she ended up dying in an abandoned and decadent temple in the outskirts of the capital.”

When he talked about the illicit affair, his eyes narrowed slightly, and his expression became clouded.

Yu Qingluo abruptly turned her head and let a few cold laughs: “Do you truly think that those words are credible?”

“At first, I only regarded it as hearsay from other people’s mouths. However, after seeing you, I started believing that there is some truth to it.”

“You…” where does he get the impression that she looks like a venomous hearted woman who is unwilling to bear loneliness? Yu Zuolin, that vicious person, in order to rectify Li Ranran’s name, didn’t even hesitate to ruin his own reputation (TL: A man ‘receiving a green hat from his woman’/ having the woman derail, was a great shame and its more common for men to hide that). And even after her ‘death’, he went on ruining her reputation as well.

This kind of vicious and disgusting man is still alive and well even after all this. How can one say that ‘the heavens have eyes’?

“Did the man you had an affair with really abandon you?” This was the part Ye Xiudu cared about the most.

Yu Qingluo wanted to raise her leg to kick him down the roof: “You had an affair with a man! Your whole family had an affair with a man! Do you think I look like a woman who’d be desperate, dissatisfied and thirsty for men?”

“If you weren’t, then who is Nannan’s father?”

“Who was the one who said that Nannan is certainly the result of me having an affair? Couldn’t it be by…” she can’t say it, absolutely cannot say it! She had already said too much, if she continues speaking, with how smart this man is, then it’s not possible to guarantee that he won’t connect the dots. So, she cannot say it.

“By?” Ye Xiudu’s expression changed, suddenly he grabbed her hand and asked: “Were you taken advantage of by someone? Who was this man? Where is he now?”

That man is YOU, and right now he is right by my side, ha ha ha.

Yu Qingluo pursed her lips, lowering her head, her eyelashes fluttering fast as she inhaled sharply. Her appearance became pale and her face full of resentment, she looked extremely frail as if she was on verge of collapse, then raising her head in an abrupt movement, she gritted her teeth to say: “Yes, I did get pregnant with Nannan 6 years ago. But I have never had an affair with anyone. That hypocritical Yu Zuolin likes to pass as a dignified and solemn Young Master, but he is actually the worst scum on Earth.”

(TL: This last part, I was very faithful to the meaning, but I adapted it to sound better in English)

Ye Xiudu’s hands tightened around hers immediately, pressing hard to the point that Yu Qingluo felt her hand hurt by the pressure he was applying. gritting her teeth, she kept on talking: “He blamed me for holding onto the position of the main room (TL: main wife) and decided to frame me. If one trap didn’t work, then he went on to set up the next trap. In the end, he bought a person to destroy my purity and then accused me of having an affair with another man.”

What she told him was all real, there weren’t any lies. It wasn’t until she saw Ye Xiudu’s jade pendant that she realized she was wrong, since she had always believed that Nannan’s father was some hoodlum.

“And where is this man?” So it was actually… a trap set up by Yu Zuolin.

“Dead. He was killed by me.” In any case, she couldn’t let his and Nannan’s father and son relationship come to light, otherwise, she’d be done for good.

Ye Xiudu shut his eyes tightly, as he felt a fire raging in his chest, his rationality completely snapping.

He somewhat regrets now, letting Yu Zuolin go back like this…

It wouldn’t be enough if that sort of man just died.

Yu Qingluo sneaked a peek at his expression and was met by his cold face, she guessed that he should have believed her. But… isn’t his reaction a tad too exaggerated? Or was she who was too excessive when telling things? Well, but those are the pure facts, so it shouldn’t be this case.

“Since you hate Yu Zuolin so much, then why didn’t you get revenge on him?” Ye Xiudu took a deep breath, putting those depressing feelings strictly under control before turning his head to question her.

Revenge? She actually wanted to do so.

“When Nannan was born, his health wasn’t good.” when she gave birth to Nannan in the abandoned temple, Yu Zuolin had received news about her whereabouts and sent someone to assassinate her. This was also the reason why the original Yu Qingluo came to pass away during childbirth.

If she hadn’t possessed this body, then it’s probable that Nannan wouldn’t have been able to survive too. However, Yu Qingluo died in the process of childbirth, so the only thing she could do was continue giving birth from the moment she came to this body. The problem was that by this point, Nannan had already stayed for far too long inside of her belly and was suffering from asphyxia as soon as he was out, he almost didn’t survive.”

(TL: I believe this was a mild to moderate asphyxia by prolonged labour, which is recoverable. If it was a more severe one, he would have had neurological sequelae.)

The assassins hired by Yu Zuolin were still there at the time, so they (TL: she uses the feminine – so this ‘they’ is ‘Yu Qingluo and Grandma Ge’) could only run away to save themselves and also had to set fire to the temple to create the illusion that they had perished. Fortunately for her, she had Grandma Ge by her side all this time and she was originally a doctor (TL: in her previous life) and was able to take care of her own health. Nannan’s life was also saved.

“In the following years, I nursed Nannan’s health and luckily, he can be said to have had a complete recovery as nowadays he is no different from other healthy children of his age. So there’s no need for me to be worried. Because it was like that, I had never found an opportunity to look for Yu Zuolin and settle my debts with him before. This time, it was by pure chance, he was the one who sent himself to my doorstep. So how could I let go of such a great opportunity?”

Ye Xiudu pursed his lips and kept silent. He could only imagine how hard it was for her to raise a sick child alone as a woman. So much that even he found it incredible, she could still find a way to break out of such a difficult situation with her own hands. Not only that, but she also became the Ghost Doctor, who’s known to all and in addition met with Jin Liuli, who is the sort of friend who attaches great importance to their friendship, to the point of being able to sacrifice herself for it[2].

It almost seems that she has an amazing appeal, that makes him unable to ignore her even if he wanted to.

This kind of topic was somewhat heavy, especially when he turned silent. Yu Qingluo became a bit uncomfortable, she tried twisting her body away from his grasp but kept being pulled by his hands holding hers.

Originally, she had been keeping all of this locked in her heart and didn’t plan on telling anyone. But today, his continuous questioning made her pour out all her thoughts, this was very out of character for her.

“Let me say this, you both have stayed there for long enough. Aren’t you coming down?” Jin Liuli’s voice was like a firecracker startling them out of their silence.

Translator’s Notes

[1] The idiom used means ‘in the middle of nowhere’ is ‘鸟不拉屎’ which literally means ‘Where the bird’s don’t shit’ – kinda vulgar. But it says that it’s sooooo remote that even the birds aren’t interested in shitting there. Honestly, I haven’t searched whether these ‘birds’ are a figurative term for people or not, since there are many ‘bird’ proverbs. Oh, just curiosity, the Brazilian equivalent for this is ‘Onde Judas perdeu as botas’ or ‘The place where Judas lost his shoes/boots’ haha. Yeah, biblical Judas.

[2] 两肋插刀 – Literally ‘Knifes piercing on both sides’ – meaning ‘to attach great importance to friendship, up to the point of being able to sacrifice oneself for it.’ I decided to keep the meaning because it makes a lot of sense in English too. But basically, she’s a good loyal friend.
