"Hahaha!! Did you see the power of our Lord Alex?!"
Selena lets out a loud laugh.
In front of her, the giant snake monsters—Death Snakes—are fleeing, turning their backs on us.
Around us, numerous dead bodies of Death Snakes lie scattered.
As soon as we landed, they bared their fangs and attacked us.
Even after taking down more than a hundred, they didn't show any signs of fear.
But in the midst of the fierce battle, when one of them started to move away from us, the rest began to flee like a dam had burst.
They must have realized they couldn't match us.
Considering the example of the Arrowcrows, it's safe to assume they won't attack us again in the future.
Selena says,
"With this, we can start farming on the mainland side!"
"That's premature. Even if we're not attacked, other subordinates might be different."
As Elysia responds, Yurie looks pale, glancing backward.
"It's like that when you get a bit further away..."
Turning around, I see a large group of Arrowcrows swarming over the dead bodies of the Death Snakes.
Yurie looks sad and sighs.
"The skin of the Arrowcrows... With so many, we could make a lot of things...!"
Elysia says in a consoling tone,
"This time, our purpose is to investigate, so it can't be helped. Unless there's something particularly rare, let's give up."
"If you'd like, I can fly them over for you?"
Lahn offers, but it's not necessary.
"I had forgotten, but it's a waste."
I teleport the surrounding dead bodies of the Death Snakes to the warehouse on Ars Island.
Inside the warehouse, Tia, along with other subordinates, is gnawing on wooden nuts.
"Tia, once you're done eating, please take care of these Death Snakes!"
"Chu, chu! Got it!"
Tia hurriedly stuffs a wooden nut into her mouth and responds.
I wouldn't get angry over a little snacking...
I immediately teleport back to the mainland side of Tiars, where Elysia and the others are.
Lahn looks surprised and says,
"To teleport with so many dead bodies of Death Snakes...!"
"Lord Alex's magic evolves every day."
Elysia praises me. I haven't counted, but there must have been more than ten.
"If possible, I'll bring them back like this. Let's move on."
"Okay!"
We continue down the cobblestone road, which is partially worn away.
With the Death Snakes gone, it's much easier to walk.
We've only come far enough to still see Ars Island quite clearly, as we've been fighting all along.
We're heading straight northeast from Tiars Province, in a different direction from the capital or Lobrion.
We don't know where it leads, and we haven't decided how far we'll go, but we've decided to follow this widest road on the mainland.
We can see some stone ruins near the coast, but as we move a bit further, the surroundings are entirely forest and plains.
Yurie says while walking,
"I don't like snakes, but it's lonely when no one's around."
"If there's someone stronger, come out!! I'll take you down!!"
Selena shouts loudly, and Yurie hurriedly puts a finger to her lips.
"Hey!! What if they really come out?!"
"No, no, this is an investigation. At this point, it would be better if all the monsters came out."
Yurie falls silent, perhaps thinking there's some truth to it.
"I'd like to see if there are other monsters. But here, Arrowcrows and Death Snakes are probably the majority."
"Even ordinary animals can't be seen. Any creature weaker than them, like the ratmen, must hide to survive."
I nod at Elysia's words.
"There might be monsters that even Death Snakes and Arrowcrows fear."
"If the sky belongs to the Arrowcrows and the ground to the Death Snakes, then what's left is underground, right?"
Lahn says, and Yurie looks down with a grimace.
"Stop it, really. What if they come out from underground?"
"They might already be digging underground, following us."
Lahn says in a way that seems to scare Yurie, who shivers.
"Don't try to scare me! I can use magic now, unlike before! I even took down a Death Snake just now—"
"Ah!"
Selena startles Yurie by calling out from behind her.
"Ah! ...Selena!!"
"Sorry, just a light joke!"
Selena laughs, and Yurie's face turns red.
Despite being surrounded by monsters, they're quite relaxed.
We continue down the road, lively and cheerful.
No new monsters appear as everyone had worried, and no one blocks our path.
After about thirty minutes of walking, the view opens up. It seems to be a downhill slope.
A few more steps, and a vast basin comes into view.
"This is..."
A vast plain stretches east to west, with a great river running through it.
Amid the sea of grass and trees, stone ruins float like islands.
"A town... no, a city, perhaps?"
As Elysia says, it's too large to be called a town.
Moreover, a long, wall-like structure can be seen outside the ruins.
If that is indeed a wall and everything inside is a city... it wouldn't be strange for tens of thousands of people to have lived there.
Yurie says, looking somewhat pleased,
"It's more weathered than Ars, so it's not as scary!"
"Is that the issue...? But from the shape of the ruins, it does seem to be an older city than Ars."
As Elysia speculates, she turns to Selena.
"Is this another ancient city of the empire?"
Selena shakes her head.
"No... According to the maps I know, it should take at least half a day to see an imperial city. I didn't expect a city to be so close."
"Maybe you just forgot?"
Yurie suggests, but I also find it unexpected.
There's no information about a city this close to Ars in old maps or documents.
"Whether it was built before or after Ars, this is worth investigating... Alright, let's head for those ruins."
And so, we set off toward the ruins of the city whose name we don't know.
