"Beck? Beck!?"
Worried about Beck, who had collapsed on the bed, Opal hurriedly called out to her.
I think I heard that it’s better not to move someone in such situations.
But as she stood there, unsure of what to do next, Najya, who had been waiting in the next room, came in with a worried look on her face.
"It’s just that she fainted, so there’s no need to worry too much. It’s probably due to sudden excitement. Her body is different during pregnancy, after all."
"I’m worried precisely because she’s pregnant. Is the baby okay? She’s breathing, but she’s unconscious..."
Unlike the flustered Opal, Najya remained calm.
She placed her hand on Beck’s forehead, checked her pulse at the wrist, and gently rubbed her enlarged belly.
"Maybe she just got a rush of blood to the head? Her belly isn’t that tight, so she’ll wake up soon. Look..."
As Najya firmly rubbed Beck’s hands, Beck blinked her eyes.
Then she slowly opened them.
"Wait here, I’ll get you some water."
Najya patted Beck’s hand and stood up to go to the next room.
During this time, Opal could do nothing but sit and watch.
She thought it might be better to say something, but she was afraid Beck might faint again.
Opal had no experience with pregnancy or childbirth, nor had she ever cared for a sick person.
When her mother was ill, she had only sat by her bedside, reading books or chatting, and that was nearly twenty years ago.
So, she was relieved when Najya returned.
"There’s no water in the water bottle. I had to get this fruit water from the lady."
Najya handed the glass to Beck and sat down on the opposite side of the bed.
The bed creaked uncomfortably.
Beck, who seemed very thirsty, quickly emptied the glass and took a deep breath.
"Are you feeling better? Now, let me say this: you need to stop being so unreasonable. You should be grateful to the lady, not complain. It’s ungrateful to complain after all she’s done for you!"
"Najya, maybe we can talk about this later..."
Najya, who had taken the glass from Beck, scolded her harshly.
Opal, worried about Beck’s condition, tried to intervene, but Najya shook her head firmly.
"No, Lady Opal is too kind. People like this need a good scolding to realize—"
"No! I am grateful to the lady!"
"What—"
Beck interrupted Najya, who was about to continue.
Taken aback by her intensity, Najya was speechless.
"I... I was always a terrible servant to the lady while she was married to Mr. Hubert. But I believed I was doing the right thing, protecting Miss Stella from a lady with a bad reputation."
"Well, I suppose you did."
"I, along with the butler Romit and others, tried to drive the lady out... Now I realize how foolish that was. Back then, I thought it was the right thing to do. I believed that justice would never lose to evil. When Miss Stella had to move to a different house, I was angry at the lady, and when she divorced Mr. Hubert, I rejoiced, thinking justice had finally prevailed."
"Oh, you’re incredibly naive."
"Najya..."
Opal listened without interrupting, thinking that talking might help Beck feel better, but Najya couldn’t hold back.
She hastily tried to stop Najya, but Beck smiled bitterly and nodded.
"You’re right. I was truly foolish. I believed someone I shouldn’t have and didn’t trust someone I should have. This is my just punishment. Mrs. Northam fired me, but she gave me enough money to get by for now. But thinking about the future makes me anxious..."
"Yes, raising a child isn’t easy. But don’t worry. As I said, we received child support from Lord Kaimont. You need to rest first. A place where you can feel safe would be best, wouldn’t it?"
"But I don’t deserve the lady’s kindness! Please, give that money to the other two!"
"Oh, you knew..."
"Yesterday, when I went shopping, I saw the newspaper headline..."
Knowing about Lord Kaimont’s arrest must have been a shock.
The other two were in the care of the facility’s director and had other residents to distract them, but being alone in this room, it’s no wonder Beck felt so exhausted that she fainted.
Determined to get Beck out of this place, Opal stood up.
"Come on, crying won’t help. You’re a mother now. For the sake of your baby, let’s move to a safer place."
"No, I’ll stay here. I don’t deserve the lady’s—"
"Oh, for goodness’ sake! You—"
Najya, frustrated by Beck’s stubbornness, was about to lash out.
But Opal raised a hand to stop Najya and smiled gently at Beck.
"Beck, can you stop being so stubborn? You were foolish, but you’re making another foolish choice now. I’m not doing this for you; I’m worried about your baby. And by the way, we received child support from Lord Kaimont. That money is for your baby. You can’t just say you don’t need it, and we’ve already arranged for the trustee to make the payments properly. Do you understand?"
Beck’s face turned pale at Opal’s harsh words.
Opal worried she had gone too far, but surprisingly, Beck nodded sincerely.
"You’re right. Could you wait a moment? I’ll pack my things."
"Just bring what you need for now. You can have someone else pack the rest."
Opal replied, feeling a bit deflated, and Beck smiled through her tears.
"I don’t have much. It won’t take long."
"I’ll help you."
As Beck stood up, Najya also stood and returned to the next room.
Beck stopped and turned back.
"I’m truly grateful to the lady. She didn’t abandon me despite my foolishness and is reaching out to help me..."
"I don’t think you’re foolish now."
Opal smiled in response to Beck’s words of gratitude, and Beck blushed and smiled softly.
It was the first genuine smile Opal had ever seen on Beck’s face.
