"If you would permit me, I intend to challenge the recruitment examination next year."
The Stern Kingdom selects its officials through an annual examination, open to both nobles and commoners. However, the pass rate for commoners is lower compared to that of the nobles. This reflects the still-unbridged educational gap between the two, but Diana has also heard stories from her father about nobles buying their way into the qualified slots. It seems that there is not enough evidence to crack down on such unscrupulous individuals.
In any case, the official recruitment examination is a narrow gate for commoners, and with a scandalous relative like Catherine, one's evaluation is bound to be lower.
"I want to reduce the number of people who, like Catherine's mother, are driven to sell themselves out of poverty. I have no intention of giving up on this aspiration due to such matters."
The stubborn Leonhardt will continue to take the recruitment examination as many times as necessary to realize his own will. Even if he fails, he will strive to study for the next exam and work to earn his daily bread. He might even try to send money to his parents and sister. Even though they have only just met, the image of Leonhardt's earnest future life vividly crossed Diana's mind.
Realizing that he could not persuade his unyielding subordinate any further, the Duke reluctantly accepted his resignation. Thus, he knelt at Diana's feet and bowed deeply.
"I deeply apologize for the great distress caused to the young lady of the Mount Duke family due to my foolish sister."
For a baron's son, he had become quite refined. The efforts he had made to improve himself, away from his parents since childhood, were evident in his demeanor. A man who had built himself up through his own strength should not have to give up his dreams for such a ridiculous farce. Diana felt her anger rise at the injustice of it all.
"Your efforts and dedication to the kingdom are known even to those of lower status. I sincerely pray for your future success."
To a woman who has just been jilted, these words might sound sarcastic. However, Leonhardt genuinely seemed to be concerned about Diana's future and was looking forward to her success. Most importantly, he smiled kindly, and despite her reservations, Diana decided to believe his words.
"I, as a member of the Duke's family, want to reconsider what I can do for the people."
Diana was also uncertain about what the future held. However, she wanted to convey that she could carry on Leonhardt's will, even as he left the palace mid-journey. Whether or not it was understood, he nodded calmly.
Then, Leonhardt took his kneeling sister's hand.
"Come, stand up. Father and stepmother are waiting for you to return."
Catherine stood up silently, seemingly without the will to resist. Despite all the insults and the fact that she had made him give up his dreams, Leonhardt supported Catherine with concern.
Following the Duke of Mount's instructions, the Meteora siblings, the Crown Prince, and his entourage were led to the palace, and the scene was dismissed.

Thus, the matter came to a close.
