The players slowly trickled out of the plaza. Song Hanzhang and Lin Jue crossed the bridge over the water channels, the bushes around them thicker than ever, the sound of insects surrounding them on all fronts.

Song Hanzhang stopped and turned to Lin Jue. “Do you hear it?”

Lin Jue leaned in to listen before asking uncertainly, “Cicadas?”

Song Hanzhang glanced at the bush the sound was coming from. “Is that so? In this season and in this situation, it’s a rather suspicious noise.”

“Then I’ll go take a look.” Lin Jue’s body reacted much faster than his brain, and he already had one foot on the grass.

“No, it’s unimportant. Rather, compared to before, do you think that it’s hotter now?”

“A little bit.” Lin Jue loosened the top of his jacket, a thin layer of sweat covering his back and front. He had thought it was because he was too nervous.

“I fear that it’s not only a little bit.” Gu Fenyi and her group had caught up to them. “The humidity has increased, as well as the smell of blood. I can scent insects everywhere. It wasn’t as strong in the plaza, but now that we’re out here, it’s far too obvious.”

“So?” Song Hanzhang looked straight at this formidable new player.

Gu Fengyi showed a polite smile. “I’m quite useful, right?”

“If you’re referring to your abilities, then you’re correct,” Song Hanzhang said calmly, looking at the three girls behind Gu Fengyi.

“This school’s only so big, we’ll meet again eventually. I hope that when that time comes, you won’t hold back a helping hand.” Gu Fengyi smiled, the aggressiveness of her beauty eased back by it. “So much of our information was intercepted by you on the plaza; if we don’t get anything in return, we’ll be at a loss.”

Song Hanzhang rubbed the tattoo on his wrist. “It wasn’t exactly a loss.”

Gu Fengyi laughed lightly and mockingly. “Don’t give me that. If it weren’t for Shentu Ming… anyways, you should be careful.”

Saying that, Gu Fengyi turned to leave.

The humming in the bushes stopped abruptly. Gu Fengyi wasn’t able to see them from behind her, but Lin Jue, having been paying attention to the bushes from the start, saw clearly- a ball of black shadow suddenly leapt out, aiming straight for Gu Fengyi!

Danger!

Lin Jue’s pupils dilated, taking a step back by instinct. The next second, the polearm in his hands was snatched away. Even with her back to the bushes, Gu Fengyi reacted with god-like speed and stabbed it down.

The crisp sound of breaking shell came as the polearm swung in the other direction, flinging the pierced insect to the other side of the bridge.

“Qingqing!” Gu Fengyi called coolly, holding the polearm.

Liu Qingqing trembled, suddenly coming back to her senses. She grabbed onto the tattoo on her left wrist, a strong burst of light exploding midair, flames flying straight towards the black shadow like a bomb, immediately reducing it to ashes.

Gu Fengyi watched for another few seconds and after making sure that the bug was truly dead, returned the polearm to Lin Jue. “Sorry, emergency situation. That polearm really is much easier to use than this pipe.”

Saying that, she shook the metal pipe she was holding with her left hand.

“…That’s alright.” Lin Jue took the weapon back, reflecting on his carelessness. Even though he had already seen the shadow, his reaction time still wasn’t faster than Gu Fengyi’s, who had her back to it. She had probably started moving the moment she realized the rhythmic humming had stopped, or maybe her snake sense had warned her long ago of the ambush there.

“Our sincerity, is it enough?” Gu Fengyi swung her arm across Liu Qingqing’s shoulder. Liu Qingqing’s face was pale.

Song Hanzhang pushed his glasses up. “If you can survive this round.”

“What a long internship.” Gu Fengyi curled her lip before turning to Chen Lu and Xia Huan, who had been standing dumbly. “Let’s go.”

It was only until all four had walked into the fog that Lin Jue asked Song Hanzhang, “What are we going to do next?”

“There are a great number of things. Let’s go to the business district and get some insecticide first.”

Lin Jue immediately remembered the ‘gift’ Lu Ren gave him. “I have a can.”

Song Hanzhang looked at him and didn’t ask anything. “Let’s try it out then. Let’s go.”

Walking down the bridge across the water system, Song Hanzhang took out a pair of car keys and unlocked a privately owned car. The car light lit up immediately. “Get up. We should be able to arrive at the Northern business district before Gu Fengyi. Shentu Ming is most likely aiming for the Southern business district, and I don’t want to meet up with him yet.”

“Xue… Xuezhang… You even prepared a car?!” Completely kept in the dark, Lin Jue couldn’t help but shout.

Song Hanzhang was already seated in the driver’s seat. “You’ve already experienced what it was like in round one, do you still really want to run around on your legs?”

“…” That was exactly what he had been thinking of doing.

“But we’ll only be able to use it now,” Song Hanzhang said lightly.

“Why?” Saying that, Lin Jue immediately thought back to the conversation between Gu Fengyi and Song Hanzhang.

The temperature was rising, the humidity was increasing, the insects were mutating.

With a click, a moth flew onto the windscreen, only to be brushed to the side by the wiper.

【The insects buzzed: we are living in a rainforest】

A crazy idea suddenly formed in Lin Jue’s brain.

“The school’s environment is changing?!” Lin Jue took a wild guess.

Song Hanzhang glanced at him. “So you’re not helpless. Before leaving the plaza, I took a brief look, and even though it’s only a slight trend, the entire environment is changing to becoming a rainforest.”

Lin Jue swallowed, a little nervous. “So what will happen in the end?”

“A complete rainforest. Tropical vegetation will grow from the gaps within the concrete, taking over the entire school. All of the infrastructure will turn to nothing but rubble, and the concrete walls will no longer be able to stop the mutating insects, forcing us to fight in the rainforest. Of course, that’s the worst outcome.”

Song Hanzhang stopped the car. “We’re here.”

The Northern business district, back after barely an hour.

Perhaps it was a coincidence, but the moment Lin Jue left the car, he saw that body not far from him.

To be precise, that dreadful dead body that Lu Ren had killed, giant flies and cockroaches on top of it.

Tens of fist-sized flies buzzed, covering the dead body, enjoying the gluttonous feast. From the distance, it looked like a horrible mound of squirming creatures, the smell of having rotten flesh soaked through the air, the buzzing of wings accompanying it.

Lin Jue covered his nose and coughed in distaste.

Even though it wasn’t as impactful as zombies tearing through a living human, the scent was much more disgusting.

“Insecticide.” Song Hanzhang reached the can out to Lin Jue.

“Let me try. Also, let me try out my weapon, it’s got a bonus ‘corrosive’ effect on it, so it’ll definitely be easy to use when the time comes!” Lin Jue was like a child showing off his treasure. He couldn’t say it in front of a crowd of strangers on the plaza, so it had been gnawing at him ever since.

“Mm.”

Song Hanzhang’s unsurprised expression made Lin Jue feel a little disappointed, but he still left the car to test it out.

Approaching the body, the smell of rot became even more intense. A few giant flies had already noticed him approaching and without hesitating, gave up on the rotten body to lunge at fresh blood. Just imagining those flies, still stained with the remnants of their putrid feast landing on him, Lin Jue wanted to rub his own skin off. He didn’t have a single desire to fight them head on.

Lin Jue hurriedly started spraying at the incoming crowd of flies, which turned to flee immediately. Even the cockroaches on the dead body a few metres away gave up on their feast, disappearing into the fog.

——Surely this effect was too good!

Lin Jue was overjoyed. “Xuezhang, this is really useful!”

Song Hanzhang stood next to the car, his brows furrowed.

“What’s wrong? Is it not a good thing?” Lin Jue asked, seeing there was not a hint of joy on Song Hanzhang’s face.

It was a good thing, just that it was too good.

Song Hanzhang looked at the vine plants already crawling out of the flower bed, the incomplete body in the middle of the road, the never ending fog in the distance, and fell into thought.

“Carry all the insecticide from the supermarket into the car, leave the rest, and then we’ll go,” Song Hanzhang decided.

Even though he didn’t exactly understand why, Lin Jue still followed his orders. There weren’t many insecticide cans in the supermarket, and even when put together with the repellent incense, there were still only just over ten of them. Lin Jue carried eight bottles of insecticide and five coils of incense and ran outside the supermarket. Just as he was putting them down in the car, he saw Gu Fengyi and her group arriving.

“Two legs can never beat four wheels. The advantages of survivors, how envious.” Gu Fengyi looked at the car and couldn’t help but show a longing expression on her face.

“There are three supermarkets along this road of varying sizes, we didn’t go to two of them. Do whatever you want,” Song Hanzhang replied.

The expressions of all four of the girls turned strange. Gu Fengyi raised her eyebrows. “Why?”

“If I were you, I wouldn’t rely on them too long. Just like antibiotics, if you overuse them, there won’t be any more use for them.” Song Hanzhang started his car.

“Thank you for the warning.”

When the car had left her field of vision, Gu Fengyi turned around, and the other three girls all looked at her.

Gu Fengyi sighed. “We’ll still have to use it, even if just for self-defense. Go gather up the insecticide first.”

The other three nodded.

“But there’s something I need to warn you about.” Gu Fengyi stood on the steps and looked down upon the others.

“Maybe up until today, you haven’t even killed a cockroach, but from now, forget that habit of screaming when you see an insect! If there’s anyone who can’t control themselves, I’ll let her know what a punishment is.” Gu Fengyi pulled up a cruel smile. “I won’t be a gentleman about it.”

Chen Lu and Xia Huan immediately lowered their heads and looked uneasily at the ground. They didn’t know whether or not their choice was correct, but there was no room for regrets.

Liu Qingqing’s eyes shone and she looked up at Gu Fengyi and mouthed, ‘Awesome.’

Gu Fengyi smiled slightly, held Liu Qingqing’s shoulders, and walked towards the supermarket.

On the other side, Shentu Ming brought the other three boys to the Southern business district.

Dan Liang held a shovel and looked around, a complete question child1, but his good looks made sure that no one would dislike him for it. Next to him, Qin Hanwen panted from the small sprint.

Lin Wei glanced at him and mocked, “You stupid fatty, go lose some weight.”

Qin Hanwen didn’t reply. Naturally weak-willed, he didn’t have the courage to fight back, and ever since receiving the reward “Hawkeye” in the plaza, his eyes had been able to see the squirming organisms in the distant darkness, all of them terrifying him.

There were really too many insects.

“Alright, we’re here. There should be many supermarkets around, so let’s find insecticide first.” Shentu Ming didn’t want the atmosphere within the team to be too tense either and pointed at the nearby markets.

Time Plaza

Remaining safety time: 0 mins.

The unseen barrier around the plaza suddenly vanished, the fog surrounding it slowly spreading inside.

Lu Ren stood on the top of the clock tower, looking at the board showing the remaining survivor numbers.

This really was… so interesting.
