7:30.

Lin Jue opened his eyes. The first thing he did was look for Song Hanzhang in the neighboring bed.

At the same time, Song Hanzhang woke up, and their eyes met each other.

That feeling of exhaustion and the fear of death still lingered at his peripherals, but Lin Jue was already smiling. He half-tumbled off of his bed to get onto Song Hanzhang’s, holding him tightly through the blankets.

“We survived! We survived!” Lin Jue repeated that one line, tears flowing uncontrollably from his eyes.

Song Hanzhang was silent for a long time, but didn’t push him away; he even reached out awkwardly and patted his head.

Lin Jue gradually calmed down. He lied on top of Song Hanzhang and watched him. Without his glasses on and barely awake, Song Hanzhang looked more gentle than any other time, his eyes filled with too many thoughts. Without the barrier of his glasses, Lin Jue could watch those thoughts until they all swirled together into a dark silence.

“Xuezhang?” Lin Jue felt that sense of uncertainty from Song Hanzhang again and couldn’t help but call out to him.

Song Hanzhang motioned for him to get up before sitting up himself, leaning against the bed frame as he put on his glasses.

“After leaving the mirror, you said that you wanted to know what had happened after the first round ended. Do you still want to know now?” Song Hanzhang looked into LIn Jue’s eyes, enunciating every word clearly.

Lin Jue nodded solemnly. “Of course.”

Song Hanzhang lifted the blanket and put on his clothes. “Follow me.”

Having left behind the shroud of darkness, the schoolground was as peaceful as ever. Walking along the bustling boulevard littered with leaves, Lin Jue followed closely behind Song Hanzhang.

He was infinitely close to the truth.

“There used to be a mark here. I carved it during the first game.” Song Hanzhang gingerly touched a large oak tree underneath the dormitory building. “After the first round ended, it vanished. At the time I thought, that’s good, I’m back from that terrifying game; I’m back to the real world.

“But I couldn’t help but ask, was I really back?” Song Hanzhang released his hand and kept walking.

The two silently crossed the dormitory gates and arrived at the clock tower.

“In the real world, after the first round ended, I carved down another mark here.” Song Hanzhang caressed a corner of the clock tower and said in a low voice, “It was here when the second round started, but now, it’s gone.”

Lin Jue’s heartbeat suddenly sped up, his throat so dry it was almost impossible to make any sound. “But- but so what? They’re just… markings.”

He couldn’t even convince himself.

-If the world where there existed a marking on the clock tower was real, then where were they now?

Song Hanzhang lowered his eyes and voiced out a suspicion that he had long buried in the bottom of his heart.

“It means that the world we are in now is fake.”
