There was a meeting of the detective association on Sunday, May 28th. Or, that’s what we said, but everyone just gathered at my house, sat around on some chairs and blossomed into silly talks. My father and brother had moved to Tokyo and so the house had suddenly become empty. If I didn’t bring people over, my chest would be burdened by loneliness.

“Oh yeah, so how’s the newspaper club going to deal with the case of Takada Satoshi?” Junka asked Hinata as he ate some green tea baumkuchen.

He was as pretty as ever. Hinata smiled.

“While it is known as the school paper, we are limited to 4 sheets of A4 paper written vertically. Basically, it is only as long as a letter. We have to report school events and some words from the principal, so it’ll get buried. I was able to talk down some senpai and secure a half page all to myself. I intend to include all the cases the detective association has solved. As for your case of Takada Satoshi, I really don’t intend on including it as it is rather complex, and violent.”

“Oh? How boring.”

Junka rolled over and landed facing the ceiling, and that was the position from which he had spoken.

Hinata had a wry smile, “Even still, I fully intend to write an article so fascinating it will make people want to join our four person detective association.”

“I’m looking forward to it, Hinata-chan.” Nao said.

Nao had been forced to join the association, but she didn’t seem to mind and had no complaints. She probably found it more amusing than vexing.

Junka stood, and drank some ice tea through a straw.

Suddenly, he said, “Can I ask something a little difficult?”

I was skeptical.

“What’s with that formality?”

Junka’s voice was very thin, “Would it be acceptable for you all to consider me a friend?”

The three of us were disappointed.

“What, you, just what do you think of us?”

“Aren’t we friends?”

“Kiriki-san, what are you saying after all this time? It’s distant.”

Junka smiled broadly.

“Oh, that’s good. To be friends with everyone… I’ve never had any until now, so I was very nervous.”

I ruffled Junka’s hair.

“Don’t be so distant, boss. We’re companions. All of us trust you.”

“Then that’s good.”

Junka’s cheeks flushed, as expected considering it certainly was something that would be a little embarrassing.

Nao clapped.

“I know, let’s take a group photo. As a group of four friends, you know. Hey, Hinata-chan, does that sound good?”

Hinata’s usual camera was shining brilliantly as it hung over her chest. It was her trademark along with the black-rimmed glasses.

“It isn’t a problem. We aren’t in our uniforms, so it cannot be used in the school papers, but let us photograph this as a commemoration of our association.”

And so we had an impromptu photography session. We boys knelt in front with the girls half-crouching behind us. Hinata set the camera with the press of a button, and quickly ran behind me.

“Everyone smile!”

Light flashed, and the sound of the shutter snapped. From what we could see on the camera monitor, it had turned out fairly well. We all copied it to our phones.

Kiriki Junka, Suzaku Rouji, Iida Nao, Tatsuno Hinata: the members of the detective association. It was good we got a lovely photo of everyone.

Junka, not hiding his inspiration, let forth his voice, “At the very least, in this screen, we are immortal.”

I responded with a smile while I saved the photo, “Yeah, that’s right.”

Our student life at Shibuyamadai High had only just begun.

Just what kind of cases would we have?

My heart fluttered with a gallant stirring.

Author’s Comment:

There is more to come.

Translator’s Note:

Hinata speaks highly formally to the point where even as she calls Junka distant, she’s the one that acts the most distant. Well, she is like that with everyone so far, so it isn’t like nobody understands. Funnily enough, Hinata is the character I can most relate to out of our main cast so far. Glasses, photography, tendency towards formal speech, bemusement at Junka’s activities, etc… My support character powers are going as strong as ever.

Editor’s Note:

And that’s a wrap for the first “Season” of Kirika Junka! It’s been a pleasure thus far!
