As the temperature continued to drop, so did Yu Zhi Le’s motivation to work. She didn’t know what kind of animal she was in her last life, but she was always sleepy in winter, and she couldn’t stop yawning when she stood at the cashier counter.
After letting out another big yawn, Yu Zhi Le rubbed the corner of her eyes, which were tearing up, and picked up the merchandise that the customer had placed in front of her. She was about to scan the barcode when the customer suddenly smiled at her, revealing a mouthful of yellow teeth.
“Sister Yu, do you remember your Big Brother Zhang?”
Yu Zhi Le looked at the man in a black jacket and thought he looked familiar, but she couldn’t remember where she had seen him before. So she gave a half-hearted smile, pretended she remembered and said, “Big Brother Zhang.”
Zhang Fa Qiang thought she remembered him and immediately became spirited. He rubbed his hands together and approached Yu Zhi Le to say, “I saw you at the internet cafe last time and wanted to greet you. However, you seemed to be in a hurry and ran away with your younger brother, so I didn’t disturb you.”
“So it was you that night.” Yu Zhi Le still remembered being followed by someone when she returned home late the other day. Now that she saw Zhang Fa Qiang was indeed dressed like the man from that day, she could not help feeling angry. “If you wanted to greet me, wouldn’t you say it properly? Following me in the middle of the night without making a sound, I thought you were going to rob me!”
Zhang Fa Qiang was shocked by her unkind words. His lewd smile stiffened for a moment. He was a little displeased, but still said while watching Yu Zhi Le scanning the items. His tone was full of indescribable confidence and superiority. “I’ve had several blind dates since then. But none of them was as good looking as you. My aunt said you are not in a good position. But I didn’t care, and after meeting you by chance at the Internet cafe the other day, I felt we were destined for each other…”
When Yu Zhi Le heard these words, she stopped what she was doing and oddly sized up Zhang Fa Qiang. She finally remembered this man, who had inexplicably come over and ran his mouth off about himself.
The blind date Auntie No. 1 had introduced to her.
“Where are your glasses?” When they met three months ago Zhang Fa Qiang was wearing a pair of rustic black-framed glasses, which complemented his image of being a bald man. That left a deep impression on Yu Zhi Le, but she actually didn’t recognise him when it was removed.
Zhang Fa Qiang originally thought she was admiring his handsome appearance. He was a bit complacent but he didn’t expect her to ask about the glasses. However, he thought he was a well-mannered person and didn’t mind Yu Zhi Le. “Do you like those glasses? When we go on a date next time, I’ll take you to buy them. They are from the small shop by the school I work at. We can wear ‘couple glasses’ as a couple later.”
Yu Zhi Le almost burst out laughing at his shameless speech, who wanted to go on a date with him? He even said ‘couple glasses’. She had never met such a person adding drama to themselves. Yu Zhi Le thought about how she had just called him “Big Brother Zhang” moments ago when she didn’t remember who he was, there was a sour taste in her throat.
She forced herself to suppress the multiple ‘f*ck’ that almost broke through the seal and burst forths. She squeezed out a smile and stated the total price of the items Zhang Fa Qiang had brought to the checkout to him, then waited quietly for him to pay with a smile.
Once Zhang Fa Qiang heard the price for the bottles of drinks and tissues, his expression changed and he smiled at Yu Zhi Le. “Younger sister, I didn’t bring enough money. Can you see if you can waive it for me?”
He didn’t even bring enough money for a mere twenty yuan. She really wanted to ask if he had any money with him or not. Yu Zhi Le’s smile deepened, “Sorry, I don’t own this supermarket.”
Zhang Fa Qiang’s intention was to have her offer the money, but when he saw that Yu Zhi Le didn’t take up the offer, his face showed some displeasure and the smile disappeared. He waved his hand and said, “Then let’s put it on my tab first.”
“Sorry, there’s no precedent for ‘putting it on the tab’ here, I can’t do it.”
“You can’t even decide this little thing? Do I look like a man who would renege on a debt? I…”
“If you don’t have money, don’t buy it!” Yu Zhi Le slammed her hands on the table and burst out with an angry bellow. “If you’re not going to buy, hurry up and leave! Don’t hold me back from settling the bill for the customers behind you!”
Zhang Fa Qiang was startled by Yu Zhi Le’s sudden outburst and was dumbfounded, mainly because he couldn’t find a way to say anything and couldn’t stand up for himself. The time ticked by in awkward silence, and suddenly a soft laugh rang out from the shelf behind Zhang Fa Qiang. It was the kind of laugh that one couldn’t suppress his laugh. Then, a tall, lean, college-dressed young man came out. He walked past Zhang Fa Qing, pushed aside the things he previously placed on the cashier’s counter and placed the chips, melon seeds and other assorted snacks in his hands.
The supermarket was not crowded with customers at this time of the day, and Sister Li was not there. Yu Zhi Le had not noticed that there were other people so close to them just now, so she dared to explode with impunity. However, now that she found that innocent customers were affected, Yu Zhi Le was embarrassed.
She pretended to be calm and scanned the items one by one. After she stated the price, the young man gave Yu Zhi Le a glance, but he still paid with a normal expression. Before pushing the door to leave, he turned to Zhang Fa Qiang with a smile and raised his chin, then said, “I’ve paid for you, don’t make it difficult for the cashier.”
Yu Zhi Le was stunned that the young man didn’t take the receipt. She quickly looked down and found that she had included Zhang Fa Qiang’s items directly on his purchase because she was too nervous.
This was a major professional accident.
The young man had already walked out of the supermarket, Yu Zhi Le wanted to chase him but was stopped by Zhang Fa Qiang, ” Younger sister, don’t be stupid. There’s a guy who has more money than common sense, why not use him and let him pay?”
Because she was hindered by him, the young man was nowhere to be found. Sister Li was not there and Yu Zhi Le could not leave her duty as a shopkeeper to chase after him, so she turned around to see Zhang Faqiang happily bagging the things he got for free and immediately kicked him out.
