Names mentioned in this chapter (which can also be found in the glossary ):

-俞知乐(yú zhī lè)- Yu Zhi Le, the female protagonist.

-余子涣(yú zǐ huàn)- Yu Zi Huan, the male lead

-王大爷(wáng dà yé)- Wang Da Ye, an elderly living in the same building as the female and male leads

-李姐(lǐ jiě)- Sister Li, a staff of the mini-mart/Yu Zhi Le’s colleague.

With Wang Da Ye’s help, she was able to find employment as a cashier at a mini-mart. As for the fact that Yu Zhi Le did not have an identity card, Yu Zi Huan’s excuse was that her parents wanted to arrange for her to get married. She didn’t want to, so she ran away from home. However, her parents confisticated her identity card. Wang Da Ye expressed sympathy for this. He was shocked by the feudalistic forced marriage in this era. He told her that if her parents came to visit, he would persuade them to support finding love on their own.

Yu Zhi Le wanted to tell him not to be shocked. This kind of behaviour wasn’t uncommon ten years later.

However, with Wang Da Ye recommending Yu Zhi Le to his friend who owned a mini-mart, she finally had a source of income. Thus she didn’t need to worry about sleeping on the streets, and be cold and hungry.

The work in the mini-mart wasn’t as hard as that of the large supermarket. Yu Zhi Le was only responsible for the cashier from 8am to 5pm. But, this meant that the salary was minimal. But in order to head back and cook for Yu Zi Huan, it was fine if it was less.

Plus, Yu Zhi Le planned to search for a second job in these two days. She can’t miss out on her ten years of knowing the future.

In addition to Yu Zhi Le in the supermarket, there was also a relative from the owner’s family who was helping out. She was a middle-aged woman in her forties and asked Yu Zhi Le to call her Sister Li [1] .

Sister Li didn’t have a good impression on the previous cashier who resigned earlier. She was very satisfied with Yu Zhi Le who was quick and sweet. Maybe it was because other than helping out at the cashier, Yu Zhi Le often helped her mop the floor and took inventory when there were no customers.

At about 4.30pm today, a group of middle school students entered the supermarket and didn’t buy many items. Yu Zhi Le was busy at that moment. Sister Li entered the supermarket’s door and commented, “What’s the matter with this child? He didn’t come in after standing at the door for a long time.”

She was probably implying that she disliked the fact that he was blocking other people’s way.

Yu Zhi Le looked back and found that the boy standing near the door was Yu Zi Huan. She smiled sheepishly and replied, “That’s my younger brother. Hold on, let me talk to him.”

Yu Zhi Le trotted towards the door. She pulled Yu Zi Huan and said, “Why are you here?”

Yu Zi Huan was still carrying his school bag on his back. Obviously, he came right after school ended. He unnaturally took out the arm that Yu Zhi Le was holding. He stood at the side and said, “I’m hungry.”

“If you are hungry, buy something to eat first.” Yu Zhi Le only thought that he was coming to ask for her to cook.

Yu Zi Huan glanced at her but didn’t speak.

He wanted to wait for her to go home together after her work had finished.

Yu Zhi Le looked back and saw Sister Li was looking at them. After pondering for a moment, she dragged Yu Zi Huan into the supermarket. She first introduced her to Sister Li, and then signalled Yu Zi Huan to greet her.

"

"

“Hello, Sister Li.” Yu Zi Huan greeted her. His limpid drooping eyes were glistening. He looked innocent, which surprised Yu Zhi Le.

Yu Zi Huan’s age wasn’t too old to call her auntie, but she was called older sister by a young boy, which was a smart move. Sister Li smiled like a flower blooming. She heard Yu Zhi Le mention that Yu Zi Huan was hungry. She bought a loaf of bread out from her own pocket and placed it into his hands. She also said that the child was growing up, so he should eat more.

Yu Zi Huan took the bread with his head looking down. Yu Zhi Le saw that he didn’t respond. When she wanted to pinch him to remind him to thank her, Yu Zi Huan looked up with curved eyebrows and thick eyelashes. He smiled like his mother, revealing the small dimple at the corner of his mouth. It was so sweet that her heart raced faster for a few moments.

“Thank you, Sister Li.”

Yu Zhi Le was just a spectator. Sister Li, who was spellbound, covered her chest with her hands. She was so ecstatic that she said Yu Zi Huan was a good boy and he should come often in the future.

Yu Zi Huan was allowed to work at the cash register and did not open the bread but kept it in his school bag. Yu Zhi Le took advantage when Sister Li wasn’t paying attention and gave him a thumbs up. She taught him how to behave in the morning, and he applied what she had taught him in the afternoon. She felt very proud of her teachings.

Yu Zi Huan didn’t say anything about it. He took out his homework expressionlessly and did his homework carefully. After showing a thumbs up for a while, Yu Zhi Le stretched out her index finger and thumb into a finger gun, and “shot” Yu Zhi Huan who ignored her.

[1] 李姐(lǐ jiě)- Sister Li/older sister Li. The first word Li is the surname of the middle-aged woman, and calling her Jie would be a respectful way of addressing her.
