I feel like I’m repeating myself, but really, the castle I worked at was huge.
The end wasn’t in sight from one side of the longest hallway—that’s how long it was.
As there were over 1000 workers, the chance of meeting humans from other groups was very low.
Meeting people from other groups would be nothing short of a miracle!
“Oh, Lu. What a coincidence it is to meet you here.”
“What a co-co-coincidence!”
It wasn’t a coincidence. I’m sorry.
Miss Dyna’s surprise was completely understandable.
We were at the back of the castle, an area where army officers usually don’t enter. Mostly court ladies and maybe civil officials.
Seeing me there would certainly be a surprise!
… I’ll keep it a secret that I followed Miss Dyna here.
If Tina found out, she’d call me a pervert, and if Vyro found out, he’d call me a pervert. Wait, am I a pervert?
“Is something the matter, Lu?”
“Um, uh, I, I picked this up…”
I took out a small sachet.
In this country, all women own these once they reach a certain status and the court ladies even make their own sachets, was what Vyro told me.
Tina didn’t have one though. Must be because she was from a different country.
Miss Dyna stared at the sachet I took out, surprised, and beamed.
“Thank you very much. I dropped it somewhere this morning. You saved me.”
“I’m, I’m glad I could help!”
Guys. Truth is, I saw Miss Dyna way earlier, but I sneakily followed her all the way here out of habit!
Her thanks made me want to apologise!
I swear I didn’t steal it! I genuinely just pick it up! And why am I getting suspicious of myself!?
“You brought it all the way here, please let me do something in return. What would you like?”
Miss Dyna’s tilted her head with a smile that radiated warmth.
Those unsuspecting eyes make me want to run away! I want to run away so bad I’m about to disappear!
There truly was nothing to hide, but I felt like running away out of habit. I’m sorry for being suspicious.
After this long monologue about my own suspiciousness, I ended up saying, “please let me help you with something,” to Miss Dyna! What’s wrong with me?
And thus, Miss Dyna gave me a long pole wrapped in cloth.
She told me they used it to clean places they couldn’t reach by hand. Wow, court ladies have it rough.
I never did see dust build up in the castle, even in the places that seemed impossible to clean.
That was all due to the unrecognised hard work people put in.
“Lu, are you okay?”
“I’m okay.”
She had called out to me from under the atrium, so I gave her a firm reply.
I stood on the thin ledge on the other side of the handrail and waved at Miss Dyna. She looked tiny below me.
I wish you could move away though. If I fell, she was at the perfect spot to die from getting mixed up in my fall.
I don’t fall, though.
Decorative sculptures lined the inner walls of the circular, fifth-floor atrium.
I was told dusting that area was tough, so most people fasten a safety rope on and lean over the handrails. However, there was a ledge wide enough for a cat to walk on, along the handrail, so all I had to do was walk along that ledge and clean. Easy.
Miss Dyna waved at me with a smile.
A passing court lady paled as she saw me. Why?
Was it because I didn’t have a safety rope on? I wasn’t wearing one because those felt restrictive.
I wiped the sculptures with the cloth-wrapped pole in quick succession.
What are they sculptures of? They’re strangely complicated. Should’ve accommodated for the cleaners when they made these.
“Am I doing fine?”
“Lu, you’re very good at cleaning!”
“Leave it to me. I’m famous for making even the walls look new once I’m done with them!”
Yup, it’s because I break them since I’m clumsy. Tina and Vyro always scold me for it.
But I’ll keep quiet about that for now. I’ll just focus on impressing Miss Dyna!
Dusting the whole atrium took a long time. Probably because I took care not to destroy everything.
Who would’ve thought it’s so hard not to destroy stuff! I had to focus more than when I fight.
However, I finished the job, no problem. Phew, I worked up a good cold sweat!
“I’m done!” I looked down from the ledge on the atrium.
Wow, since when were so many people watching me. I hadn’t noticed as cleaning took all my concentration.
The court ladies were whispering amongst themselves while Miss Dyna shouted ‘Thank you!’ back to me.
Man, I’m happy! I’m so happy! Miss Dyna’s dazzling smile is priceless!
I’ll dust the sculptures every day if she would smile like that for me! I’d end up breaking one though!
“Huh. I didn’t think you could do this too.”
A voice from the back interrupted my thoughts.
I stiffened as the man’s soft voice continued.
“You always break things, so I thought it’d be for the best to keep valuable things away from you, but it looks like you’ve finally overcome your clumsiness.”
“Vyro… why are you here?”
You must’ve followed one of the court ladies to come all the way here!
But before I could say that, he told me he came under Her Highness’ orders. Yep, I’m the only one who would follow a court lady. I’m sorry!
Vyro grinned with his irritatingly good looking face.
“If I report you can do performances like this, I’m sure many people will ask you for help.”
“Don’t call it a performance! At least call it a talent!”
Honestly, though, anyone could do this. It wasn’t difficult.
But before I could say that, he nodded and continued talking.
“Sticking to walls must be the norm for geckos like you. Maybe you could polish some spires next time.”
“What even is my occupation anymore!?”
And who’s the gecko!? Ugh, curse you court ladies laughing down there! I can hear you!
The only thing I did as a general was earning my pay. I never did anything general-like.
I get it guys, I’ll clean. I’ll work to make up for being a salary thief.
… And thus, after cleaning a spire with a bucket in hand, as thanks, Miss Dyna gave me a bundle of spring onions. I headed home very pleased with myself!
I should tell her the truth about my hate for spring onions already. It makes me happy to receive them though.
