I never gave any thought to the passing of the years.
Ah, another year’s gone by, was about the extent of it.
The witch I lived with seemed to share that opinion, as Tina woke up at noon the day after new years, and suddenly began filling buckets with cold water. Yeah, uh, what are you doing?
“In the country I’m from, we follow a ritual in the morning sun of the new year.”
“It’s already past noon.”
The morning sun’s gone, idiot.
But isn’t this the first time she’s talked about her home country?
That’s surprising. She didn’t look any different, but maybe the passing of years was getting to her.
“So what does that have to do with the buckets?
“As part of the ritual, men from each family pour cold water over their heads to pray for good luck.”
“Nah, hold up.”
You’re not gonna make me do that, right?
And where even is that country? I’ve never heard of a ritual like this.
But Tina, in her post-wake up moody state, cold-heartedly pointed at the backdoor of our house, a bucket in hand.
“Now now, stand over there.”
“Shut up! And some of that water’s turned into ice already!”
“Turning water into ice is an intermediate level magic.”
“I didn’t ask for an explanation! Though I do want to ask if you’re still sane!”
“Apparently, one man prayed while getting 10 buckets of ice water poured in his head, and got to marry the prettiest girl in town.”
“I’ll do it. Please give it to me.”
If pouring some ice water will let me marry Miss Dyna, I’d let her pour a hundred buckets!
So there I was, standing in the backyard with my top off, with the first bucket in hand.
Tina stared at me from a distance so the water wouldn’t get on her. Her eyelids looked heavy.
“Alright, here I go!”
“I wonder where his strange optimism comes from.”
“Hand over the next one, Tina!”
“Looks like he would kill me… if I told him it was a joke…”
After forcing myself through twenty buckets of ice water, I came down with a fever the next day.
But someone must’ve informed her! As Miss Dyna came to visit me! In my house!
I lucked out straight from the start of the year! Thanks so much, Tina!
