There are eight iron chains, placed in eight directions. These eight chains are used to lock up a demon.
Is this what Ting Nu meant? Xuanji is still confused, “Then… how long is the chain? And where is the demon?”
Ting Nu smiled again, with a hint of mockery, “In order to create these iron chains, back then nearly all the wealth in the world was used…but the strange thing is, no one knows where the demon is being held. The eight iron chains used the eight trigrams of the heavens[1] to suppress him, and I heard that they pierced his collarbones with gold locks. Even if he has the ability to overturn mountains and seas, he cannot escape…”
Xuanji nodded slowly and said, “So impressive! He must have done a lot of bad things in the past.”
Ting Nu’s eyes shifted for a moment, and then he murmured, “What is good and what is bad? Those people, I’m not sure they know it for themselves…?”
Xuanji looked at the chains for a while but quickly lost interest and returned to the jade cabinet with her sword, saying, “Harming people and doing bad things is bad. It’s such a simple truth. I’d rather kill the real body of the Purple Fox first.”
When Ting Nu saw that she was going to stab it with her sword, he trembled and said, “Do you really want to kill her?”
But Xuanji didn’t say a word. With a twist of her wrist, the tip of his sword stabbed mercilessly towards the heart of the purple fox. But there was a ‘clang’ sound, the purple fox’s real body is harder than even ordinary steel, the sword did not pierce it, but slid off and hit the cabinet. The jade cabinet could not withstand the hit, and shattered to the ground.
Xuanji used all her strength, but the shock was so strong that her hand was numb. She looked at the purple fox lying in the jade shards with difficulty, but its body was so hard that there was no way to hurt it.
Ting Nu’s face had paled, he said softly. “With your current Qi power…you can’t harm a single hair on it’s body. Go and find your brothers and escape.”
“No.” Xuanji suddenly looked back at him, thoughtful, “That’s not what you said in the cave. You said, with my ability, how could I lose to her. Why do you want to change your words now? You seem to… know a lot of things.”
He is also a very good friend to her, and he is a very good friend to her.
Earlier, Ting Nu thought she was simple-minded and had lost her spiritual power in this life. He didn’t realise she was so sharp, her heart was a mirror.[2] He thought she was not listening, but she had remembered it clearly.
For a long time he could not find any excuse, “This is…different. You don’t have… not yet.”
“Not yet, what?”
He was rendered speechless and decided to play deaf.
“Ting Nu?” Xuanji took a step forward and wanted to ask more questions, but then suddenly she thought of something and was overjoyed, clapping her hands and smiling, “Right, I didn’t think of that. Since I can’t hurt it with a sword, I can use fire to burn it! You mean I can use cultivation techniques, right, Ting Nu?”
Ting Nu was so confused by her that he didn’t know whether to nod or shake his head, and could only give a pained smile.
Xuanji made a seal and invoked two fire dragons, both the size of a large bowl, hovering back and forth in the air, sparks falling everywhere. As soon as she moved her finger, the two fire dragons spotted the Purple Fox lying on the ground and flew up with a flick of their tails, circling around it and creating a raging fire that was terrifying.
“In good condition.” Xuanji thought she was injured and could not conjure up the fire dragon, but she still succeeded. She looked back at Ting Nu and wanted him to praise her.
But his eyebrows were locked and his lips were pursed, as if he was worried. After a while, he abruptly said, “It’s useless…the fox demon is a thousand years old. You are not on the same level as her now. Fire can’t burn her to death, water can’t drown… She has already passed the thirty-six karmic tribulations, a mortals fire to her is like a trick.”
Xuanji was unconvinced, but when she looked back at the purple fox, she saw that not even her whiskers were burning. She was frustrated and recalled the fire dragons to be put away.
“Then what to we do. Either she is dead or we are dead,” she sighed.
“Why do you want to kill her? She is a fully grown fox demon and she never kills anyone, so why do you want to kill her?” Ting Nu carefully questions.
Xuanji frowned: “Who says she doesn’t kill people! Didn’t the people of Zhongli City send four men to her every year? Isn’t she a demon that gathers yang to replenish yin, so if she doesn’t kill people, where do those people go?”
“Those people…”
As soon as Ting Nu began to speak, he was interrupted by the sound of a beautiful voice at the door, saying, “I killed those people. What are you going to do? Are you going to avenge them?”
As soon as the voice was uttered, a purple silhouette drifted in, seemingly weightless as a cloud of smoke, and wrapped around the fox on the ground. When they looked, they saw the purple-clothed beauty standing across the room with a smiling face, holding a sleeping fox in her arms.
“Ah! You…” When Xuanji saw that she was unharmed, it must have been Si Feng and the others who were injured, and she urgently asked, “What have you done to them?”
Zihu stroked the fox in her bosom and laughed, “It’s nothing, they were just thrown off the cliff after I collected their yang energy. Whether they die or not, that depends on their fate.”
When Xuanji saw her smiling face, she took it as a joke, but her heart was so anxious that she trembled and said, “Ting Nu said you wouldn’t hurt anyone… You really killed them?”
Zihu looked righteous and said coldly, “Considering who I am, so what if I kill a few mortals? Can’t I just kill them? That guy in the mask was called Sifeng, right? Before he died, kept calling your name. What a loving boy…”
Xuanji’s heart was filled with pain, as if a huge hand was squeezing her internal organs, and then put her in the frying pan, and the pain was so great that she couldn’t stand straight.
Is he dead? Is he really dead? She still can’t catch up with the people she’s been trying to protect.
Her eyes blurred, as if she was back to a moonlit night when a hot-tempered teenager yelled at her, “Are you even listening?”
Then suddenly she was in the middle of a blue sky, smiling at a cold teenager, saying, “Let’s not separate for the next four days.”
But these people are already dead and will never be seen again. The last thing he said to her was to let her escape.
Ting Nu shook his head and said, “Zihu, don’t say these words in anger! You don’t know, she…”
Zihu looked pale and said sternly, “What angry words? Its true! What are you talking about! Yes, I killed them all! I also want to destroy Zhongli City…no, the whole world, what are you going to do? Oh, I forgot. You’re only human. If you don’t want to die, get out! Go back to your cave! Or I’ll have no mercy!”
“Zihu!” Ting Nu raised his voice and shook his head, “You’d better go back. You can’t touch those cultivators. Let them go and do as you’re told!”
Zihu laughed and took the fox into her sleeve, saying in a charming voice, “What can you do? You’re just a down-trodden immortal, and she’s just a little girl who can’t even tie a chicken[3]…what can you do?”
“No.” Xuanji’s voice rang out coldly, and she stared at the purple fox in a daze, her face full of tears, but she didn’t have any expression. “You should also try dying once.”
The sword in her hand flicked gently, she is using the most common sword technique of the Shaoyang School, the Yaohua Sword.
When Ting Nu saw the terrifying flash of silver in her eyes, he knew it was bad and said, “Zihu! Don’t be stubborn! Release those cultivators!”
Zihu’s lips opened, and she was about to say something when she suddenly saw the silver light before her eyes, and the tip of the sword was as fast as lightning. She was shocked, the face which seemed to be carved out of ice, came closer. The eyes are deep with a silver light pulsating like a flame, yet extremely cold, with a murderous aura so strong that Zihu couldn’t move.
You should also try dying once.
It was only after the sword light roared past like a dragon that the purple shadows turned into smoke and fled to a corner in a panic, where it gathered, and stared at Xuanji with horror, as if she was an evil ghost from hell.

[1]: Bagua / Eight Trigrams: The Bagua, Pakua or Palgwae are eight symbols used in Taoist cosmology to represent the fundamental principles of reality, seen as a range of eight interrelated concepts. Each consists of three lines, each line either “broken” or “unbroken”, respectively representing yin or yang, 0 or 1 forming binary numbers 000-111 (0 to 7). Due to their tripartite structure, they are often referred to as Eight Trigrams in English.
[2]: The Author is using 明镜 / míng jìng (mirror) as a metaphor for something that provides clarity and insight. Similar to saying someone has ‘a sharp mind’.
[3]: 手无缚鸡之力 (shǒu wú fù jī zhī lì) – literally: lacking the strength even to truss a chicken (idiom). Figuratively, it means ‘weak or unaccustomed to physical work’.
