"Mom, Dad, I've made up my mind, I want to become a police officer."
In a public housing estate in Hung Hom, Hong Kong Island, a young man said this to his parents at the dinner table.
"No way!"
The young man's father slammed his wine glass on the table and shouted angrily, "Why do you want to be a cop? You should focus on your studies!"
"Hui-zi, you're only in third form, and your grades are good. Why not continue your studies?" his mother also tried to persuade him earnestly.
Hui-zi's real name is So Lok Hui, born in 1962, and he is just 15 years old this year.
These things were not the main issue; the most important thing was that So Lok Hui's soul had been replaced by that of an ordinary person from forty years in the future.
Logically, as someone from the future, So Lok Hui should have been able to build a successful career if he had gone into business.
That was what So Lok Hui thought when he first arrived in this world.
However, when he was on the rooftop, daydreaming about the future, his upstairs neighbor, who was also his big brother, Chan Ka Kiu, slapped him, making him realize the truth.
This might very well be a world from a movie.
In the following days, through some simple investigations, So Lok Hui discovered that this was indeed the case. Some of the popular songs, novels, and movies from his original world did not exist here at all.
This revelation left him at a loss.
Without a historical reference, it was impossible to ride the wave of the times.
As for being a literary copycat, that was even more out of the question.
So Lok Hui was not a genius and did not have a photographic memory.
He could hum a few lines of some songs, but writing them down was out of the question.
Similarly, for novels and movies, So Lok Hui only knew the general plots and could not reproduce them in full.
So, So Lok Hui was suddenly at a loss, unsure of what path to take in the future.
Fortunately, there was a silver lining. The "golden finger" he gained from his穿越 (穿越 means "穿越" in Chinese, which can be translated as "time travel" or "transmigration") gave him a sense of hope.
In So Lok Hui's mind, a system called "Justice Hero" suddenly appeared. The name was a bit low, but it was very powerful.
The only function of this system was to exchange justice points for skills, attribute points, and other items.
To earn justice points, So Lok Hui needed to do some just deeds.
Although the name of the system was full of flaws, it gave So Lok Hui a clear direction for the future.
Police officer!
What is justice?
In So Lok Hui's view, the law is one of the embodiments of justice!
And police officers are people who exist to enforce the law.
Returning lost property to its owner, preventing crimes, and seeking justice for the deceased—these are all just deeds in So Lok Hui's eyes.
Doing these things as an ordinary person would be inefficient and could even be dangerous when facing vicious criminals.
But for a police officer, upholding justice is their duty.
With the support of thousands of police officers across Hong Kong, So Lok Hui could fully demonstrate his abilities.
Therefore, becoming a police officer was his goal.
"Mom, my younger brother and sister have very good grades and will definitely go to university. Even if my grades were better, I would only be able to finish sixth or seventh form. Instead of wasting money on me, it would be better to focus on my brother and sister."
In Hong Kong, compulsory education lasts for nine years, and the cost of schooling increases significantly from fourth form onwards.
If a family had only one child with good grades, the parents could manage to send the child to university.
However, So Lok Hui knew that their family's financial situation could not support all three of them going to university.
Hearing So Lok Hui's words, his parents fell silent.
Then, So Lok Hui gave a reason that was hard to refute, finally convincing his parents.
"Besides, the Junior Police Academy offers free education up to fifth form. After I graduate, I can continue to study while working as a police officer," So Lok Hui said.
So Dad took a deep drink of his wine and said dejectedly, "It's my fault!"
"How can you say that, Dad? You work hard to support us; you're the best father!"
Seeing his father's low spirits, So Lok Hui tried to comfort him.
"That's right, Dad is the best." So Lok Hui's younger sister, So Wai Yee, pulled her father's arm and pouted.
So Wai Yee is the third child in the So family, four years younger than So Lok Hui.
As the youngest daughter, So Wai Yee is the apple of her family's eye. Her actions immediately cheered up So Dad.
"Ah, I heard the police academy is very tough. Are you sure you want to go, Hui-zi?" So Mom asked, concerned.
So Lok Hui nodded firmly, "I am the eldest son, and it's my duty to contribute to the family."
"Hui-zi, if you want to go, go ahead!"
So Dad wanted to object, but knowing that his child was growing up and had his own ideas, he agreed.
"Thank you, Dad!"
Although the housing estate was large, gossip spread quickly.
In just one day, everyone knew that So Lok Hui was going to the Junior Police Academy.
"Hui, I heard you're going to the police academy?"
So Lok Hui had just returned home after registering when Chan Ka Kiu, the big brother of the housing estate, ran over.
"You know, Ka Kiu-ge." So Lok Hui smiled at the young man in front of him.
Chan Ka Kiu was only 20 years old and was still in school.
"Good for you, I didn't expect you to be so quick. Wait for me, I'll apply to the police academy after I graduate. Then, I'll take you under my wing," Chan Ka Kiu said with a hearty laugh.
So Lok Hui rubbed his chin. It was 1977, and the Junior Police Academy was a two-year program, followed by a six-month police academy course. This meant he would become a full-fledged police officer in 1980.
Chan Ka Kiu would graduate in 1980, and the police academy training usually lasted about six months. Even if he joined the police academy immediately after graduation, he would not graduate until 1981.
So, So Lok Hui would actually be Chan Ka Kiu's senior.
Thinking of this, So Lok Hui couldn't help but smile. However, he didn't plan to reveal this now; it would be better to surprise him later.
"Thanks, Ka Kiu-ge."
"Haha, no problem, no problem!" Chan Ka Kiu was very happy to have a brother joining the police force with him.
"Ka Kiu-ge, the school I'm going to is under closed management. If anything happens at home, please keep an eye on it and let me know as soon as possible."
What So Lok Hui was most worried about was his family.
"Tsk, what are you talking about, brother. Go with peace of mind, I'll take care of the family," Chan Ka Kiu patted So Lok Hui's shoulder.
The two had grown up together, not blood-related but closer than brothers.
"Okay!"
