### Taboos for Staying at Hotels

(Excerpt from an online post)

There are frequent reports of paranormal events occurring in hotels and inns. While some may be attributed to guests experiencing hallucinations due to unfamiliarity with their surroundings, many cases remain unexplained by scientific means, with some only privately confirmed by staff.

### Lingering Spirits of Suicides

Some people, feeling utterly hopeless, wish to minimize their impact on others and find a comfortable place to end their lives, often choosing hotels and inns. Since suicide is considered an unnatural death, the deceased often harbor unresolved grievances, leading to their spirits lingering in the place of their death, a phenomenon known as "lingering spirits."

In a five-star hotel in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay, a foreigner committed suicide by poisoning in a certain room years ago. Since then, guests staying in that room have occasionally seen a foreigner sitting on the edge of the bed at night. Housekeepers have even reported seeing a wooden rack holding drinks on the table shaking for no reason!

### Hotel Layouts Attracting Spirits

Some hotels have casinos, which are already prone to attracting spirits due to their nature. Rumors suggest that some hotels set up a "Five Ghosts Wealth Attraction" layout to boost casino business. The Genting Highlands in Malaysia is a prime example, with a long history of strange occurrences.

Moreover, hotel rooms are typically dimly lit and quiet to provide guests with a comfortable environment. However, this atmosphere is also conducive to the gathering of spirits, especially during the off-season when occupancy is low, and the positive energy is insufficient.

### Eight Precautions to Avoid Encountering Spirits:

1. **Avoid Staying in the Last Room**

Hotels are rarely fully booked, and rooms are usually assigned starting from those closest to the elevator and lobby to concentrate guests for faster room service and easier cleaning after check-out. Conversely, rooms at the end of the corridor have lower occupancy rates, weaker human energy, and are more likely to attract spirits. If assigned to a last room, it is advisable to request a change.

2. **Greet Before Entering**

Press the doorbell before opening the door, or knock three times if there is no doorbell. Enter sideways to show respect to any other "residents." Once inside, greet loudly to let them know someone has arrived.

3. **Turn on All Lights**

Upon entering, turn on all the lights in the room and flush the toilet. Lift the bed covers and pat the pillow to signal to any spirits that a guest has arrived. However, avoid opening all the wardrobes and drawers immediately to avoid disturbing the spirits and to give them a space to hide.

4. **Disarrange the Bed Against the Wall**

If staying alone in a double room or sharing a room with two beds but wanting to sleep together, avoid the bed against the wall. Instead, disarrange the bed against the wall by flipping the pillows, bedcovers, and sheets, or put the pillows in the wardrobe to indicate that the neighboring bed is also occupied.

5. **Watch Out for the Bible or Quran**

Some hotels provide Bibles or Qurans in rooms for guests' convenience. Seeing a Bible or Quran is normal, but if you find one open upon entering, it could be a sign. While believers generally do not believe in the Bible's ability to ward off evil, hotels often place an open Bible or Quran in rooms where incidents have occurred to suppress spirits. In such cases, it is best to request a room change.

6. **Beware of Unusual Smells or Phenomena**

If you notice an unusual smell, feel uncomfortable, or experience unexplained bed vibrations, TV and light switches turning on and off by themselves, these could be signals from spirits. If they are indicating they do not want to be disturbed, requesting a room change is advisable.

7. **Do Not Put Clothes in the Wardrobe**

While spirits cannot wear human clothes, they can place their hands in the sleeves and hide in hanging clothes. Therefore, it is best not to put your clothes in the wardrobe when staying in a hotel.

8. **Precautions Before Sleeping**

Before going to bed, do not turn off all the lights; leave at least one light on to maintain some positive energy and provide a sense of security. Additionally, do not neatly place shoes by the bed, as this can make it easier for spirits to wear them. Instead, place them in a disorganized manner or one facing forward and one facing backward. Placing them in a slight V-shape aligns with the Daoist Bagua symbol, promoting harmony and protecting against spirits.

### Facing Spirits with a Calm Mind

When encountering spirits, maintain a calm demeanor and avoid showing hostility. If you are not yet asleep, the best course of action is to leave the room and request a change. If you do not want to change rooms, calmly negotiate with the spirit, asking them not to disturb you. If you feel uneasy, you can open the Bible to a chapter describing Jesus expelling evil spirits, although some Christians may view this as a formality. If you are paralyzed in bed and a devout Buddhist, recite the "Heart Sutra"; Daoists can summon the "Five Thunder Generals"; Catholics or Christians can recite verses from the Bible spoken by Jesus to gain strength against evil spirits; and those without religious beliefs can chant "Namo Amitabha."
